A mate and myself had a ball playing Forza last night. However rather than just goin all out for the win from the start and it being all over by halfway through the first lap we decided that everytime we passed another car we would try to force it off the road.
It made for some spectacular (and hilarious) crashes and some exciting close races. Just wondering if anyone else plays games in ways not intended in the original design and what they are?
(camping outside the HQ in MW2 picking off people goin for it doesnt count).

WARTHOG WARS!!! Me and my buddies used to play halo split screen using a game type we called warthog wars. 1v1 each player has a warthog, the goal was to knock them out of their vehicle and run them over. With the crazy physics it was awesome.

In Halo 3 we mess around with all the settings, low gravity, one shot kill etc. But seeing as all those options were put in by Bungie i'm not sure if it counts as playing it in a way not intended by the designer.

I can't remember what the level is called, but in Halo 3 there's a multiplayer level set in a desert with a big old stone temple in the middle. Now, the level boundary in this map is a minefield that does a complete circuit of the level (or lap, and I think you can see where this is going). All you need to do is grab your vehicle of choice and begin racing in the minefield. Much fun.

GTA SA had some great cheats that, used in combos, made entirely new games.
Examples: Everyone's Yakuza with swords and you have a sword + everyone attacks you + punches make cars float away = over-the-top ninja battle

Flying cars + free tank + vigilante sidemissions(not a cheat)= flying tank attack minigame

Company of Heroes. 3 on 3 Online. The guy in the centre builds only AT-guns, the guys on the flanks builds only units with flamethrowers.

Holy shit that game became hard! xD

not sure why, but once racing on grid, online, with a guy I did not know, we were the first 2 of the pack, I was bored and started to drive slowly, he did the same, and waited for the pack to pass us, and started running again until we were again the top two, and again we started to drive slowly, he won the race at the end and I finished being second =) while all the other palyers started to yell at us.

Well, most developers would tell you that you should have your main attention on the TV screen you are playing the game on.

I'm rarely doing that. I'm always multitasking while gaming. I'll have another TV on, I'll be on my laptop chatting with friends or posting here, and I'll often have food to eat while I'm gaming. Sometimes I'll even play games/do school work at the same time.

I don't think that's how most would typically play games.

I used to have so much fun doing these kind of things.

Now the only one that comes to mind is making personal stunts in multiplayer GTAIV.

*sigh*

Where has my imaginative childhood gone?

I tried playing portal while upside down, I failed horribly. I do often play a stealth type chracter even though most games don't support that, so I am limited to guns with very little ammo or trying to do stealth kills.

In a two player split screen fps, you're not supposed to look at your opponent's screen to determine where they are (but you do, admit it). That's why a friend and I came up with this game...in Resistance you play split screen vs. on the rooftops level with nothing but...rockets! Then the entire point of the game becomes using your opponent's screen to figure out where they are and launch a missile right at their face!

In the first Halo, at the part after you first touch on Halo and get the Warthog, my brother and I would drive off that cliff area down into the quarry and try to land on the other. And playing with Banshees on the second snow level in the control center place was fun, killing eachother in the pit e.t.c.

MW2 my friends and I would do a similar thing with the throwing knife, trying to position it so throwing it straight up so it hits the other. An amazing kill cam to watch.

Bullet tag in GTA IV is fun. So are demolition derbies. Man, we came up with loads of fun stuff to do in that game. I guess it's one of the reasons I love sandbox games; they let you play.

In every racing game ever I always end up just driving backwards to collide head on with other cars instead of actually racing. There was some NASCAR game where this was actually a viable tactic as you there was an option to make your car take no damage while opponents could still be wrecked so you could eliminate the entire field and win by default.

Lead a life of idealistic wholesomeness as a pacifistic citizen who most definitely does not shoot incredibly annoying NPCs with arrows for their own sadistic amusement? 'Cause that's totally what I did after seeing this video.

Oh man I always do this in games. My friends give me crap about how it takes me twice as long to play through games. It's because I'm always dicking around, trying out random stuff that doesn't effect game progress.

Hell yeah Warthog Wars! My friends and I loved to play that. I think it's even more fun with 4 people, because you can get multiple chain collisions to launch them even further (adding more vectors). We just had a rule where when someone respawns you had to let them get to a vehicle again before they are fair game. Not only do you ram each other, but once you knock them out of the car, you have a dodge match (like bullfighting) to try to kill them before they get back in (which also gets crazier with 4 players). I miss the days of the indestructible warthog (at least for custom games).

Which reminds me of one of my most memorable "dicking around" moments. One time my brother and I were playing co-op Halo (the first one) on the Silent Cartographer level. We managed to get a warthog all the way down to the bottom of the base. ALL the way down, to the bottom floor, to the map room. It took forever, but it gave such a feeling of accomplishment. And this was the days before "achievements," where you had to make up your own cool/wierd/obscure things to do. We had to ram/jam/burst/punch/squeeze/wriggle/explode the warthog through a bunch of doorways that it's not really supposed to go through. But we got it to the very bottom. It took us so much work to get it there that we didn't bother trying to get it back up (nor were there enough grenades left). Plus there was the added uphill difficulty. Getting it to the bottom was plenty enough challenge for the night. Fun times.
