so today I heard someone talk about how they got married and stuff, and she said she only dated the guy for four months, then they decided they should get married, and since they decided so early it was "obviously meant to be".
my first thought was "yeah right, I bet it lasts shorter than you dated" (i didnt say it, just thought it)
then my second thought was "wow that was cynical, would anyone else just have thought it was sweet/nice and went on?"
I've been described as extremely cynical, but until now I just laughed and thought nothing of it. but now im scared

so my fellow escapees

am I too cynical?

Congrats, the internet has ruined you.

We have complementary cookies at the door. But they're probably not all that good.

Too often people are stupid when it comes to marriage. I'd rather wait for a good while before getting married so I could know just about everything about the girl before 'tying the knot.'

Its all down to personal preference quite frankly, I would never do that, but kudos to them.

As Bill Maher says "Be More Cynical". Dont just accept things and move on, sit and give important things some scrutiny and see how well they hold up. If everything crumbles with a bit of pressure clearly you were on the right path.

Nah, you're not too cynical, because I would have actually said it...

In my view, cynicism=the bit of common sense modern society has not managed to destroy

You're not being cynical you're realistic I think it's like half of all marriages end to divorce.

Well either it was meant to be or they are both the right kind of stupid that results in a couple getting married after four months.

I think in the US it is heading for two thirds, though don't take that as gospel truth.

I blame all such thoughts on my time spent on the internet. It's a harsh land where we must question everything if we are to survive. Did I really win an Audi? Am I really the 1,000,000 visitor to this page?

When we start out, we think we might be, and we get spyware. We become jaded and this carries over into the real world.

I was at a wedding reception today and I must admit I thought to myself "It'll be over in 3 years tops".

I don't think I would be comfortable getting married unless we had been dating for at least a year.

No, you are reasonable. But I guess that's frowned upon nowadays. No matter how much two people love each other, getting married so quickly is a stupid thing to do. But hey, if it works out, good for them.

That's pretty cynical, but most likely true.
When a marriage is THAT rushed, you know there has to be something else motivating one or both parties.

I do not think that you are being too cynical. In all honesty that would have been my first thought as well. I however, would have said to the woman that I have doubts about her relationship's strability, ask her several question on said relationship, and the procede to tell her my first thought or that I think that she is a very lucky woman.

Four months is simply not enough to properly evaluate whether you should commit to what is supposed to be a lifetime relationship. They might get lucky but the odds are against them.

To answer your question: yes, it's cynical. But you're also probably right.
