hi all. i need opinions.

ok so i pre-ordered portal 2 on steam a while back. then i found out a few days ago that if you buy the PS3 version you get the steam version free. am i crazy for this annoying me? i mean i emailed them and they canceled my pre-order for me but they also made sure to point out that "steam purchases are non-refundable" and they only did this as a one time favor. first off pre-orders should ALWAYS be cancel-able (yes its a word now)since you dont actually pay for it until you get the item. and secondly, isnt it a bit unfair to allow something to be pre-ordered far in advance of announcing that it will be available free?

anyway it all worked out and i cant wait til Tuesday, but still....kind of annoyed.

yeah PS3 cost more but $55 2 games or $45 for one.

and i wanted it for the ps3 but settled for the steam one simply because it was cheaper and easier. i think thats why i bothered me so much when they said "hey you can get the one you wanted and on top of that get the one you settled for for free".

idk, i guess its really the fact that canceling a pre-order on steam is a no-no that bothers me more. specially when valve is the reason for the canceling.

PS3 version costs more no?

$55 on PS3, vs. $45 on steam preorder?
So you pay 10 more dollars and get twice the product? Still not fair.

You mean getting the exact same thing, just on different platforms.

To the OP, no, you're not crazy. Though I personally don't see why you're getting pissed really.

You are a bit crazy if it actually DID annoy you. But hey, if you can't even bother to investigate 5 minutes before you pre-order a game just be glad that Steam is graceful, EA would have told you to suck it, and so would have many others. So read about what you are going to buy. And try to investigate a bit more.

I've known for months and months that you get a PC copy with the ps3 copy, a case of you not doing the research on it's not their fault, is it?

That is crazy yes. If Portal is worth $45 to you, it is worth $45. Simple as that.

You can buy a game on Steam, or through mailorder, or in a shop and the next day it goes on sale for a 50% discount. These things happen.

It is totally fair, because you got what they said you would get for the agreed amount.
There's always a sad soul who doesn't know how to shop around, or who buys something just before the price drop, but that is not the fault of anyone.

Yes. I don't understand why having two copies of the game is even an incentive. What, are you going to get bored with one version, and play the other as though it's a totally new experience? Why not just pick one version you would prefer and just buy that one?

you'll be even madder when they deny you your copy due to keys being out of stock.
Won't happen because the game is published and developed by Valve, while the other games that run out of keys during sales are published or developed by 3rd parties, meaning Steam has to get its keys from the 3rd party themselves.
What you will end up with, though, is a download speed worthy of the dial up era.
