Still way too young and foolish to be a father. However, I don't want a John or Bill as my son. I want something unique, yes, but not easily tauntable. I don't see how Lyra will be ridiculed. Maes? I dunno, kids can be creative with their insulting...
I hope I pronunced it correctly in my mind
Maes? More like maize! Corn-boy!
However, if kids start calling each other names like these, it's better than alternatives.
I'd probably have odd names for my kids though, and until other kids get the references, your own are fairly okay.
If you wanted to be mean, make a common name spelled differently (ex Jeff = Geoff) so they're doomed to a life of mispronunciation.

Lyra? From the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, yes? I like the name. Wouldn't get bullied or anything.

Maes is a little odd, but again, I don't think it'd cause any problems. I know someone called Rex, which, of course is 'king' in Latin, and he doesn't get any stick for his name.

Edit: I want to call my son Spencer. I have the surname "Reid" and obviously Spencer Reid is the name of Matthew Gray Gubler's character on Criminal Minds. Spencer's not a particularly common name, so I guess it could be classed as unusual.

There's nothing wrong with an unusual name, as long as either:
A) you have an honest look at yourself and ensure that you aren't using your child's potential future embarrassment as a way to show the world how clever/worldly/nerdy you are.

and/or

B) you giver your child a conventional middle name so if one day they get sick of the odd first name you gave them they can choose to go by their middle name.
good points here.
However, I just wanted to ask: your avatar is from Babylon 5 yes?
OH! Name your kid after an alien from there! Nothing bad will happen then!
This coming from a guy who thinks naming a son Aragorn would be awesome. Or one of the game of thrones characters.
However. you could try for a more normal referential name. Such as (for a game of thrones fan) Justin (probably a bad idea) or Stark.

I would be. I want to name my male children Gilgamesh and Malakai.

At the very LEAST they'd be middle names.

I'd say the only problem with the name Maes is you may doom the kid to countless teachers and secretaries at doctors offices who have no idea how to pronounce it.

Hell I might even be mis-pronouncing right now. I'm pronouncing it "Maze" or "Mays"

Heh, I don't think many kids nowadays would realize that. The annoying ones who come up with things like that have really gone down in intelligence. But I like your thought process. xD

Anyways, I think those are perfectly fine names. Sure Maes is a little out of the ordinary but it's not too out of the ordinary. Lyra sounds like a great name, too.

As for me, if I ever have kids, I already think I know what their names would be. If it was a boy: Paul. If it was a girl: Elisabeth. If I have double of a gender, they get whatever second-rate name I peg 'em with. =]

Those names seem pretty normal to me. But hell, I named my twin sons Malfurion and Illidan.

Maes (i think pronounced "maze") is referring to Maes Hughes, the slain Brigadier from Full Metal Alchemist...

you and your wife ARE nerds...

and i fully support both names as 100% awesome

Yes - Lyra is from His Dark Materials
Maes is to be pronounced as 'Mays' and if you know where that's from, kudos

Taunting is such a dumb thing to worry about in naming your kids. I'd worry a lot more about sending them to some sort of cattle-pen school where the kids are barely supervised and verbal abuse is tolerated or ignored by the staff.

Knee-jerk response if I hadn't read the OP: Of course you are, parenting is supposed to be done by the government, haven't you been listening to all of the fear-mongers in the media lately?

OT: I like the name Lyra, it would certainly interest me and make me want to know her better rather than pick on her or something. But as far as Maes goes, it seems just a bit too weird for me. But that may be because everyone mispronounces my last name as it is, so having a strange first name as well would simply exasperate me.
I'd easily know when I'm being called for roll-call though: "All right, I'm probably going to say this wrong..." "Here." "M..M-mais?" "Here!" "Mays?" "HERE!"

Another thread has brought up the issue of parents giving their children easily taunt-able and generally goofy names. My question to you all is this: am I dooming my children to the same fate by giving them uncommon names (Daughter: Lyra; Son: Maes - - yes, my wife and I are super nerds)

Also; any of you giving/or gave your children unique names?
I love Lyra. Maes...not so much. Though if you make his middle name Maes Hughes, it might sound better :p.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that children are immensely creative in their cruelty. If they are determined to hate someone, it doesn't matter what their name is, they will find a way to mock it (or, conversely, if they are determined to like that child then they will find a way to praise it). Furthermore, making decisions based one what other people will think is precisely the warped mentality that leads to this cruelty in the first place ("Everyone else mocks them, I need to do so as well!"), so from the beginning your argument makes no sense.

Give them a name that fits, and one which they won't have the desire to change as soon as they are legally able. That's basically all there is too it.

A: Daddy, where does my name comes from?

B: It comes from a Japanese cartoon I liked a while ago.

Don't do this to your kids, please.
I was named after Michael J. Fox's character from Family Ties. I honestly don't mind. It's a neat little story.
