Nope that's pretty normal as far as I can tell. But what do I know, I'm just flying cat with a moustache and a top hat.

Sanity is weakness. Sanity is submissive. Sanity is boring.

Insanity is being strong enough to develop your own mind free from the "sheep" like template society demands you have so that you can play nice and it can control you. Think and behave as you want to or as you instinctive do, regardless of any rules or "normals". Just make sure you can handle the consequences of whatever you do, because when you break it's rules society will notice you and fight back.

The world is only an interesting place because of insanity. Think of all the historical greatest inventors, artists and musicians, the word "eccentric" used very often, which of course it just societies term for accepted insanity.

Insanity is a huge what makes you a unique individual, rather than just another human.

Unless your insanity is caused by brain trauma, disease or an infection, then yes you got a problem.
I find your avatar awfully apt for this statement.
Also, I prefer the idea that sanity is merely one form of insanity anyhow :p
So we're all mad here....

As you describe it? No. That's pretty normal. Now if your internal conversations took this form...

THEN I might start worrying.

I talk to myself all the time. It's not insanity. It's good conversation!

Lots of people do that, myself included. But I have the Chinese symbol for insanity tattooed on my right wrist, so I might be insane.

You're not crazy. Lets just agree on 'eccentric' and call it a day.

i tend to do that myself sometimes, its a great way for making plans. The best ideas are the ones you can talk yourself into after all.

but the more I think about it, the more I think that it sounds fairly abnormal... and then I come up with a counter-argument about why it IS normal. You can probably see where this is going.
I also debate myself in my head. I don't think that's weird - it's just a process of forming an opinion, and then testing it for inconsistencies. And it gets tiring when you're rolling counter-arguments and counter-counter arguments around ad-nausium.

But what d'you mean by actually explaining things to yourself? That's something I don't quite 'get'.
I mean that I actually go through the process of explaining how something (anything that happens to catch my attention at the time) works, to myself... even though I already know how it works.

Probably not.

Talking to yourself is fine if it helps you work out problems.

Also, you should burn things.

You should probably ignore Daystar: As I already mentioned just moments ago, we are all figments of our fevered psyche...but you know what would help quiet all of the weirdness? Sweet, cleansing, flames...share their light with the world.

I do this with myself as well: Conversations, debates, explanations, concepts, ideas, etc. I'm pretty sure I'm sane...I think...

Your avatar answers that question. Seriously, bro, of all the avatars on this site, yours and that one guy who has kirby popping out of Sonic's eyes are the only ones that give me the jibblies.

Anyway, my policy concerning all matters of self, whether it be mental health, if you are wrong, or otherwise: If you have to ask, you probably are.

Generally if you can wonder about your own mental stability your fine. Someone who is genuinely insane is incapable of recognising it or even giving the possibility consideration.

When you start arguing with yourself & losing, then you know you've lost it. I talk to myself, my car, my cat, my fish & I curse the sun daily. So no you're not crazy, all the other people are freaking bat shit crazy.

My older brother is a Paranoid Schizophrenic. I've got an entire lifetime's experience in dealing with a TRUE mad man (though now that he's older he's gone through a natural body chemistry shift that's left him mostly stable--mostly).

The real nuts are CERTAIN that they AREN'T crazy. Trust me--it's not pretty dealing with a truly insane individual.

You're not crazy. I do such things all the time, mostly to revise things I've already learned and to check my own understanding of things. I have "imaginary" conversations with myself in order to pose questions to myself, to check whether or not I've fully thought things through. It's a useful tactic.

As long as you know it is yourself, you're not suffering from delusions, which means that you're probably not mentally ill. There are many mental illnesses, but the ones you are concerned about (the psychotic illness), require you to believe that the voices are coming from outside your head. Really mentally ill people will hear voices as clearly as if someone else in the room is talking to them - the voices will not go away and are often derogatory, controlling or threatening. Sometimes they hear two or more voices talking about the patient, often criticizing their choices and lifestyles.

As long as you know that you are talking to yourself, and as long as you don't ACTUALLY hear voices, then I think you're fine.

No. This is a thing the human brain does to improve you're social skills. You ask yourself a question and subconsciously you come up with an answer as a reflex. I don't think you have much to worry about unless... You know, it wants you to do bad things.just fighting with yourself how ever, that's sane.

I don't think you're insane.
It's just a thought process, I sometimes do similar thinking things when faced with a more challenging problem.
You might see it as an "inner discussion" while others just see them as... well, thoughts :p

But based on your topic headline I came in here with one sole answer: Yes
Then the first thing I saw was your avatar, answer still: Yes
Then I gave your text some thought and made my more subtle answer: see above

Sounds very normal to me, your mental health is doing just fine, OP.

Anyone ever have that internal debate with yourself, but without the use of words? I mean, when you try to think about the words you used with yourself, and discover that you didn't actually use words, only images, feelings, instinct?

Nope, you're fine, I'm worse... I've names some parts of my mind and given them personalities and ask them opinions when I need help with a decision... They are not imaginary friends, they are the people that live inside my head...

THEN I might start worrying.
I love Colin Mochrie. Him and Ryan Stiles are one of the great comedy double acts.

OT: I talk to myself all the time. On mornings where I don't have work, I really like to go for 2 hour walks, which I did this morning, and it wasn't until I got home that I realized that I had talked to myself about the Baker Venkataraman rearrangement for the entire walk.

The strangest topics flit through my head at times.
