On soul mates and true love: I would like to agree with you were life not so damned determined to prove you wrong.

Tell me escapists, am I just naive? Does the world really work this way, or am I just living in a fantasy?
That's the way the world works theoretically, and most people would be perfectly happy with that, but a few bad apples always ruin the bunch with greed, the most destructive and evil of the supposed 7 deadly sins (I still say sloth is a plus in someone's favour)

Imagine my surprise when I logged in this morning and found that I had been quoted 15 times! I didn't really think this thread would get much traffic. Now, I feel I must clarify a few points so that we can proceed more smoothly. Ahem:
I'm crazy(or so I've been told), not stupid. I'm also a history major. I know the horrible depths man is perfectly willing do dive to. I live in a college neighborhood; I regularly carry a military-grade combat knife for self-defense. But in a fight, I always tell the guy I have it, and if I have to use it I will kill him. I won't hesitate to kill someone in defense of myself or another. I don't see the world through rose-colored classes. These are all ideals I strive for. I see that there's evil in the world, but I want to do something about it. Now I'm a criminology major. I plan to go into a career in law enforcement. I believe that humanity is basically good and world peace, though not feasible now, may be possible one day. I liked George Carlin's idea: have everyone in the world meet everyone else. "War with the Russians? Hey I know those guys, they're alright." I know the world isn't all sunshine, rainbows, and strippers(What? Strippers always make me happy.). But am I naive to strive for these ideals? I know the world doesn't always work that way, but I think it should.

No need to depress yourself by adapting an unnecessarily pessimistic view of the world.
This. Even though I don't really agree with most of OP's world view, you're supposed to live your life to mirror the way you want the world to be--to improve on it, rather. Being pessimistic about The Man screwing you over or charity being wasted effort is decidedly less productive than being willing to extend a hand to help a fellow man. So don't get down thinking you need to wall yourself off.

Go on wit yo bad self.

How do so many people seriously believe in soul mates? Seriously. The fact that otherwise logical people believe in such nonsense as soul mates is very confusing to me.

However, OP, I think your stance on the rest of it is admirable. I do believe that one should live with honour, honesty, integrity, etc. My own set of morals can be said to be on the grey side, but as far as the morals that actually count are concerned (trying one's best to go through life without hurting other (innocent) beings, for example), I'm right up there.

However, to see the good in humanity is sort of naive. I mean, yes there are good people, but I believe that these people are outnumbered by those who would, given the chance, allow themselves to be corrupted for the sake of greed/lust. Sad but, I think, true.
