Thank god you came along. I was beginning to think there was no taste left in animation on these forums.
OT: Part of the reason this "fad" has gained such momentum here on the Escapist was the pre-existing pony obsession of editor Susan Arendt. Since then, it has blossomed into some sort of bizarre cartoon cult following. Not just here, either. I hear many parts of the internet are infected. I'll take their word on that. Nobody I know watches the show, but then again, I don't know very many emotionally disturbed people.
Ultimately, however, it's a cartoon show aimed at little girls that, against all reason, has attracted a massive teen/young adult male fanbase, hinting at some deeper-rooted pathos in the internet-dwelling population. The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long, however, and this fad will eventually die out and die out hard. Whether it will be due to a decline in the show's quality, or by the inherent ADD in its viewer base, only time will tell.
One thing is for sure - I would not mourn Australia's lack of the show. You aren't missing
anything.
