OP likes obscure EDM but lists a whole bunch of non-obscure subgenres.

What about Moombahton or Breakcore? (Not that moombahton is all that obscure)

From Rotting Fantasylands has got to be one of my all-time favorite albums. It just paints these massive scenes in my head while I listen to it.

I'm not trying to sound like an elitist. It's just I've always felt isolated! I want to reach out desperately to people. Not just simply talk on a message board. I'm not quite sure how obscure or not obscure the genres I'm most interested in are to the big picture, but I'm just sick of people calling me that weird guy and his weird music. Is that asking too much?

One of the best albums I've found on bandcamp so far as to be Seven by Stavros Gasparatos. It's a mix of IDM and modern classical.

emotional Joystick
Venetian Snare
The Flashbulb
DJ Shadow
DJ Tiesto
36
Ginormous
A million Billion
Wisp
Autechre
Saberpulse - I have just one album of his. Not sure how much more he's produced.
Amon Tobin
FENNESZ - I need more of his music

Another unique album I've found on bandcamp is Hallelujah by Igorrr it's a mix between classical and D&B. It's downright amazing.

I've got plenty of music from the artists I've listed above and it's growing.

If you were, then the dozens of people trying to get me into electronic subgenres as though they're the first person to try must all be in my head instead of annoyingly real people.

No, they're everywhere.

Well, it's true of most genres of music.

I hope you don't think I was calling you an elitist.

TBH, I've only heard of DJ Tiesto. Everyone else is drawing a blank, but I appreciate the list.

I listen to just about anything, which most people here probably consider mainstream, but the truth of the matter is that I haven't met anyone in person that likes the same bands that I do, like:

Olive
Purity Ring
Lords of Acid (90s era)
Flunk
The Hundred in the Hands
Die Antwoord
Ivy
Metric
Mazzy Star

Yeah, what hooks me in is women; there has to be a woman singing in order for me to listen. Otherwise, I can't even find people IRL that listen to Daft Punk or The Chemical Brothers. It seems that the majority of people out there in the world are superfans of stuff like Rihanna, Adele, and other mainstream stuff. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just...kinda lonely out here :p

Incidentally, if there was one really random recommendation I would make to you, and I guess I am, I suggest Cocteau Twins. They're not electronic per se, they're merely incomprehensible, and they might put you to sleep. Good relaxation music I think.

What's that? You are one of the few people who like a specific type of music that isn't mainstream? That's cute.

Sounds like me in 7th grade boasting about how brutal my taste in metal was. By high school I found Psyopus and the Berzerker. Still thought I was awesome and unique. Then I discovered the Black Metal scene... at that point I realized that I didn't know what I was talking about, decided to chill out, and stopped waving my dick around.

I don't know what the moral of my story is... why am I still here?
you werent born in le wrong generation were you? you know with Queen and Creedance and the beetles and Kiss and when music was not a souless carichature of culture

Hm, I'm not sure if I'd call those sub-genres obscure at least not on the internet. I don't meant to play the 'my genre is more obscure' game but I can't pass up an opportunity to share classical Vocaloids.

but electronic music and Hip Hop have a long and loving history, aspects of hip hop like "Trap" branch out into their own respective EDM genres

also unrelated but so much music of all kinds of genres is "electronic" nowdays (99% of pop for example)
I've NEVER been interested in Hip-hop. It's not my genre. The genres that black people are known for doesn't represent me, because deep down I don't want to be stereotyped. I'm living proof that stereotypes can be wrong.

Had I been born white, we wouldn't be having this conversation. A lot of minorities are more accepting of white people liking the stuff I like. I feel like my life in general has been like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole.

Of course not. Electronic music is wildly popular today, and I don't know how you've managed to avoid other fans of it. o__O

I mean, "Turn Down For What" is in the top ten right now, and it's nothing but pure electro melodies, bass waves, a drumkit, and Lil Jon screaming in a glorious mashup.

<youtube=KS7IlF8BLnM>

By the way, do you listen to ฿ŁΛNK ฿ΛNSΗΣΣ? If not, you really should.

Doesn't disliking something because it fits a stereotype still mean you're being controlled by a stereotype, only exclusively rather than inclusively?

Besides, she's outright saying that you're wrong. And she's right about that.

Not only that, but being African American makes it even harder for me. My culture isn't known for the more obscure genres of electronic music.

Doesn't it just? :D

That tends to happen to most things that Lil Jon touches.

When I listed the genres I like, house never came up so why does it come up now? Hell, I'll give other genres a much bigger chance than I would(talking to you dubstep) house. It's just not my cup of tea AT ALL.

I want otherworld inhuman landscapes and bleeps and blops, and weird robots talking and all kind of crazy shit that makes feel warm and fuzzy. Dark chanting and dystopic melodies(talking to you dark ambient) make me feel like the darkness is going to suck me in and never let go. It's intoxicating!

I owe my love of EDM to WipEout; thus I tend towards the more upbeat trance styles that the games use. The series got me hooked on Orbital, and more recently Wipeout HD Fury introduced me to Noisia; these bands have gone on to become some of my favourite non - metal/classical artists.

For example:

Wipeout 2097 soundtrack: P.E.T.R.O.L by Orbital
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X7yQXaAJ28

And more recently, from Wipeout HD: Tokyo by Stanton Warriors
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0tNTOKHoBE

(Apologies for the lack of embedding, I tried and failed.)

B rather than A. This shit is shoved down my throat 365 days out of the year and I can't get away from it. Hell I'll even mute the TV if something with rap or hip hop comes on. Good thing I don't have to do that too often.

Edit: The Lumines series has a fantastic soundtrack. Listen to it if you can.

Fair 'nuff. Have you tried Sunn O)))? It's more metal than electronic, but hoo boy do they have the dark ambient part down pat.

(ugh... are people honestly, seriously, still using the offensively idiotic term 'IDM'?)

And as others have pointed out, most of those forms of music are about as obscure as The Beatles or Michael Bay films.

Julius, do you know Squarepusher (don't listen to that EP, btw, it's not exactly his best work)? Check out Feed Me Weird Things, Ultravisitor, Hard Normal Daddy, Go Plastic, Hello Everything, and - if you're feeling particularly adventurous and/or patient - Music Is Rotted One Note.

Put your best 'phones on and give these a spin, for starters:

Why not? Almost no one who would be offended by it actually cares, and the "sanitized alternate title", braindance, isn't really that much better. At least IDM can be said without thinking about the implications behind it.
