Mental retardation refers to people with IQs below 70, Asperger's, on the other hand, does not necessarily affect IQ.

Aspergers is a pretty common illness actually. Go to any gaming convention or find any movie/game geek, they will most likely have a slight form of it. In fact, most of the people i get along with have it, they are fully functioning members of society who just happen to have a few quirks.
I was once diagnosed with it but after getting a second opinion that was proven false.
Right now I'm just under the impression that Aspergers is just the name for a certain type of personality since a few too many people have it for it to be a "Disorder"
Do you call having the genetic code for being double jointed a disorder? no, you do not.
Uuuh, I do not think Aspergers means what you think it means. It *definitely* is a disorder. Hate to say it, but I'd put down a lot of money that most of those people don't actually have it.

To the OP, don't worry you're not retarded. That has nothing to do with aspergers anyways. You're just in a sour mood, which happens to everyone. And I agree with the couple people above me, since you describe it as "extremely mild" there's no reason to tell people other than the ones you trust. People may not understand how mild you mean and treat you differently.

"retarded" as lost all meaning to me, thanks to the internet and gaming. I often forget it's a mental disorder, not just a swear word.
It's -not- just an insult? Next you're going to tell me n00b is used to diagnose people with big feet or something.

OT: It's been said, but it bears repeating. Everyone has issues, and everyone gets bummed from time to time. Stick with it and experience what life has to offer, regardless of the bad stuff.
It IS only a swear or derogatory term now. It's incorrect to call someone with an impairment retarded. Actually, it's been incorrect for about 5 years or so.

EDIT: Also. No, you're not dumb. You have issues with handling people. Asperger's often deals with differences in brain activity too, so you'll probably be as good at one particular thing everyone else. Maybe better.

I recently found out that Retardation is not the name for any mental disorder. It's a word that means things to be slowed down.

Anyway. When it's seen as a very mild case, it's probably negligable. Perhaps you shouldn't focus on what people think of you that don't really know you, and disregard you or even hate you just because of the very mild disorder.

Mental retardation and asperger's syndrome are 2 quite different things.
yup.
Aspergers is a form of autism which is... um... thats fairly accurate actually. you basically learn some stuff well and other stuff you cant (ie social interaction) which leads to quite being smarter than most (due to their disorder causing them to religiously study x subject.)
retardation is limited mental capacity (an IQ of under 70)

Most likely.
watch the video to see why.
the guy who made it is technically autistic, because he falls under a bunch of categories.

If only I had a nickle everytime someone tells me that he has Aspergers.

Seems like this diagnose has replaced ADD as the disease-du-jour for explaining why someone has problems in their personal life.

While I don't wish to insult someone, riddle me this: How exactly do you differentiate "mild aspergers" from "not being a people person"?

Yes you are definitely retarded.

*reads post*
No, at least not under most definitions of the word. Also, don't worry about being depressed. Go to cracked and look for an article along the lines of "6 things you didn't know about happiness". It has made my life a lot better, simply because I know that no one is truly happy for more than a few moments at a time.

I thought Asperger's was a syndrome rather than a disease, since it's not something you get infected with or can transmit?

I know all about it, I'm autistic myself.
Even thought to have Asperger's, which would be strange due to all the friends I have.
<_< Diagnosing this kinda thing is hella hard!

No, unless you have an abnormally low IQ, you're not retarded.

I'm a little tired of people with high-functioning autistic spectrum disorders (and bear in mind I technically am one) acting like its a big deal. Seriously, at least you've been diagnosed, at least you can claim access to help and support on account of your very mild condition which doesn't necessarily affect your life negatively at all.

Some kids with autism have to wear crash helmets in case they stim by banging their heads against the wall, some can't tie their shoelaces, some will need lifelong care until the day they die. You are not one of those people. You might be on the same technical spectrum, but that is because the spectrum is very broad.

Yes, it bugs me that people who don't have the same difficulties sometimes seem to have an easier time with things, but that doesn't excuse anyone for not trying. Everyone has difficulties at some things, whether it's because they have an ASD or because they're not very intelligent or not very physically able or because they have emotional problems or a million other reasons. You're not going to be euthanized for failing to meet some arbitrary standard of ability which you made up.

Aspergers in particular is virtually meaningless because it doesn't even imply a cognitive inhibition, just a tendency towards certain behavioural traits. Getting worked up over it is really whiny. :p

Let me give you an example of how meaningless autism is to generalize about. I have an inspecific autistic spectrum disorder (not aspergers because I had demonstrably delayed development in certain areas). Cognitive ability testing puts me in the top 1% of the population for all cognitive tasks except for one, in which I am only in the top 30% of the population. Because of this, I am considered to have a disability..

Run that over in your mind for a second. I have a disability because in one specific cognitive area I am 'only' above average. The average person cannot perform the tasks I am most 'retarded' at as well as me. Now granted, there's more to an autistic spectrum disorder than cognitive ability testing can show, but still.. stupid, right?

No I don't think you're retarded. And you shouldn't either. I mean look at me, I was diagnosed with autism in 2006, but I still don't personally believe there's anything wrong with me.

So since a lot of people in this thread seem to know a lot more about disabilities such as these, when and how were you diagnosed and didn't help you anymore knowing you had something? Honestly, I have a ton of little problems, I never really thought much about it, but, I don't know, I'm starting to think they're getting in the way of my life and was wondering if I might have something...

Asperger's isn't simply being bad at socialising, it generally comes with the following in addition:

*Lack of reading suble body language in other people
*Restricted and repetitive behaviours or interests
*Very formal and literal use of language

a few years back i was diagnosed with extremely mild asperger's disease. I'm not completely socially deficient, i've got lots of friends (yes, i'm talking about people i know, not people whom i only know via PSN and have never met in person), but still, i feel..depressed. like nobody really cares about me because i'm retarded. at least, that's what i bet everyone who doesn't know me well enough thinks. so tell me, people... do you think i'm in any way a freak? perhaps a retard? maybe a genetic offshot? or a mutation? keep in mind the disease is MILD, not BIG.
Asperger's is not a disease, it is a condition. I have Asperger's, no one noticed it until a year ago when I got severe pain condition and it came up during the pain psychological treatment.

Asperger people are not retarted, we are most of the time smarter than the average person.l Asperger's is not a mutation or a genetic mistake, it is a random occurance in which the neurological patterns in your brain have organized in a fashion that will give you a behavior pattern that is called Asperger's. It is no different from people who have cognitive behavior issues, their brains are wired so that they are unable learn as others do.

I have quite strong form of Asperger's, I am a person of solitude and intellectualism, I avoid people because I do not meet people who understand me or people who are smart as me. I own extremely broad band of knowledge and skills, I got ability to learn musical instruments with extreme haste.

Do not get destroyed by your Asperger's, embrace it, use it to your benefit, find out what your perks and obsessions are and wield them as a weapons against others, get a uppercut on them. We Asperger people rarely have friends or long lasting relationships, we usually enjoy only our obsession that bring us great deal of enjoyment, I get more enjoyment from music than I do from anything sexually oriented, it is the only thing that ignited emotions in me, otherwise, I am cold as a stone, solid and rough.

EMBRACE IT AND NEVER CALL IT A DISEASE!

If you do not recognize yourself from these simple "perks" then you do not have Asperger's. You need to have a Obsession, Natural talent to something, you require logic and patterns around you, you partly lack from basic primitive abilities of social interaction - may it be understanding sarcasm, inability to read faces, inability to "read between the lines". If you do not possess these then you have been misdiagnosed.
And to help your pain if you do have Asperger's so did:
Ludvig Wittgensteinin
Alan Turing
Albert Einstein (most likely)
Steven Spielberg
Also suspected cases in history:
Isaac Newton
Charles Darwin
Syd Barrett

Now tell me these people were retarted.

You have mild aspergers and depression. You know this so you can deal with it. By the sounds of it it hasn't even really hindered you socially. You're in a better position than so many others, even people who don't have diagnosed minor disorders. And you want to mournfully wonder whether you're a freak? Bloody Hell mate, grow a pair and stop being so bloody melodramatic.

Well like anyone else you should keep in mind what you think people are thinking about you is not necessarily what they are actually thinking about you. So don't bring yourself down just because of an assumption.

First off, stop feeling sorry for yourself. Secondly, if anyone doesn't understand the difference between aspergers and retardation then explain it to them and if they refuse to listen then stop talking to the person because he or she is clearly so thick that they aren't worth knowing. Thirdly, in recent years doctors have come to believe that a surprisingly high amount of the population exhibits some form of mild aspergers or aspergers symptoms, you're not alone, your not even in a small minority. Fourthly, if it bothers you that people know then quit freaking telling them. They don't have any right to know personal informational about you unless you share it. Lots of people have issues and don't share them because it is embarrassing or because it usually doesn't come up in conversation. Hell hardly anyone knows I have Aspergers because mental health and autism isn't something that anyone talks about unless prompted. Fifthly, Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Lots of people have a condition on the autisum spectrum and they deal with it. Lots of people have depressions and they deal with it. Lots of people have issues and they learn to accept it and move on. Wallowing in pity and asking for people to pity you never helped anyone and I'm not going to coddle you and say "its okay, poor baby" because you have to learn to deal with this and be tough or it will destroy you and I don't want that to happen.

Speaking as the father to a severely handicapped son, whose condition also includes aspects of full-blown autism, I think I have the right to tell you: get over it.

My son couldn't stand up until he was 3, does not speak a single word, understands around a dozen nouns, is incapable of sleeping regular hours (often autistic kids have issues with hormones that regulate rest/active hours), can not use a toilet (still wears nappies), can not use cutlery, can not use a cup nor bottle by himself, has not figured out how to use a door handle despite being shown literally hundreds of times, and shows absolutely no interest in constructive play (he will not attempt something himself spontaneously. A few days ago was the first time he managed to open a box with one hand and reach in with the other hand to fish out a toy).

You see what I'm saying? You're making this out to be a bigger deal than it really is. Believe me mate, there's always someone who has it worse.
