Am I Taking This Online Pass Thing to Hard?

From what I gather, an online pass is suppose to increase increase new game sales because no one wants to be cut off from whatever content it adds on. But for me, it has the opposite effect.

For the last few months, whenever I heard a game I wanted had an online pass I canceled my pre-order and made an effort to only get it used. I kinda wanted to make sure I stuck it to the game company for having such garbage. I'm likely to do the same for Twisted Metal.

How do you all feel about this? Are online passes still affecting wether anyone buys a game or not or is it just an accepted fact of life now like starving children and Ke$ha's existance?

No, online pass is the one of the reasons so many people choose to be PC gamers. We all hate it. It's the reason I don't console game.

(rant START)

I feel if you're gonna protest, you gotta do it all the way or not at all to drive the message home. The most famous people who fought for change all risked something, or otherwise inconvenienced themselves to prove they're serious about going without whatever they were protesting. I don't mean to equate online pass boycott with civil rights movements, but those successful revolutions? Hell, most if not all successful revolutions, big and small? Won by complete commitment.

I often feel that, if you show me someone who says "I don't support DRM/Online passes and I'll boycott this game to prove it," I'll turn around and show you a fake who's gonna buy it Used cause he couldn't go without to prove he's serious. All that shows is that no matter what you say, they have your number. You're gonna eventually cave because hey, if you loved Amalur 1, you're gonna wanna get Amalur 2 ASAP, DRM be damned. I don't imply here that Used gaming is the devil and should be done away with, but it's common knowledge that Used games = not a dime for the devs, and it truly only works in their favor when it leads to New sales for future titles in the long run. What happens to the support the devs who worked hard for the game you love deserve when you don't buy any of their games New just because their publishers suck?

If you're gonna buy Used, and your sole reason is to boycott, then instead of showing they still have you by the gonads while NOT supporting the devs, show that you're serious by inconveniencing yourself and truly sending out the message that you care more about yourself as a consumer than you do about having sex with aliens.

TL; DR:

You buy used, no one gets a dime. Not the greedy publishers, not the hardworking devs who may not have had anything to do with the decision. While you get to have a nice gaming experience all the same? That's never sat right with me, in terms of protest.

Ever since SOPA just about every word that comes out of everyone's mouth is akin to a Muse or Rage Against The Machine song, but I feel like I've yet to see some smoke to go with that fire in everyone's belly. Just a bunch of people who ultimately still care more about fucking blue aliens in deep space and killing kobolds or whatever than about truly sending a message.

(end rant)

So I guess to answer the OP: No. It never affected me that much. I dislike the practice, but I wanna play fun videogames at the end of the day, not protest every small thing every day, or else I'd be living naked in a cave.

Also, there's no point in me doing anything, since I already *very, VERY rarely* buy games from people who practice it, so it's something I don't even have to think about 99% of the time. I'm talking, grand total, I bought Arkham City brand new and that is it, so far. Unless the Cerberus Network and the Shale DLC for ME2 and DA1 respectively counts, too. Then up the count to 3. None of the Ubisoft games I have require a code or a connection either.

I honestly do most of my gaming from third parties.

Speak for yourself. Your 'We all hate it' is pointless sine it doesn't bother me at all.

Have you ever heard the phrase "Cut off the nose to spite the face." That kinda sounds what you're doing by only buying the games used to make a point.

This and corporate arrogance go hand-in-hand. So I've come to accept both as possible secret lovers. When people get pissy about online passes and don't buy the game, guess what. You just screwed yourself out of a sale. You did absolutely nothing to add to your profit. The only reason used games exist is because people bought your game. You're not losing any money when someone trades a game in or buys it used. Not everyone can afford a 60 dollar game, and if we only had brand new games to choose from, so many less people could financially manage video gaming. The only thing they're doing is alienating the majority and hoping they cave, even though many can't, because they'd rather sleep under a roof as opposed to a box with a drunk guy named Stan who may or may not be coming on to you. All the while, creating bad press while reducing the growth of your own fanbase through both alienation, and making your games less affordable experiences.

Also, I think it's not too smart...

I think the OP's opinion is totally reasonable. I also find it quite insulting that a game company expects me to pay twice for something I already own. The content is on the disc, they just won't let you access it until you cough up the cash that they have no right to. Recently I've actually been thinking of starting to do what you do now. If a company thinks they can get away with this rubbish, I'd rather not give them the money of the sale. But that doesn't mean I can't have the game, I'll just buy used.

Your TL;DR is basically the same length. I lol'ed.

Anyway, online passes don't really matter to me, since I typically pay for games on a semi-annual basis anyway. Typically I only buy games that I beta test, so if I've tested something and liked it enough to buy, I assume that I'll like it in 6 months.
Yes, I've been bitten in the butt a few times ( ie: Tabula Rasa and Warhammer), but overall I've played the games for at least 6 months.

I don't care. I buy all my games new and I never play online on my consoles anyways.

Never stopped me buying a game, I prefer new over used if its a PS2 exclusive (Latest console I have), and I'm a PC player otherwise. I don't get what the big deal is really. You try to save money, they try to earn it. Big whoop. 'But its legal!', so's what they're doing. You're both cheating each other so... IDC to be honest. Not going to miss out on a game 'cause someone wants everything for second hand.

Not to mention that it's rather strange hating console games for online passes which only effect people buying preowned when pc games for the most part can't be bough preowned and used to use cd keys.

Though honestly the only console games I have with online passes are EA ones...

If you were going to buy it new anyway, what's the point of boycotting it because the online pass, you get it free with a new game, all you have to do is put in the code.

i have not a single problem with online passes, if your buying the game used the developer isnt getting money from your purchase while your getting the product this is only the developer getting money from there work.

Brevity is wit. I'm NOT witty at all. I suffer for it in class too -.-; That rant had to come out though...it's been festering since the SOPA thing.

But yeah, I don't really find myself bothered by it because by default I'm not part of the problem.

I've tended to stop. They say they need the pass to fight used sales. To me that means they think lots of people won't like their game and will trade it in very quickly.

It does not inspire confidence for me, so I tend to avoid them.

I'd like to pop the game in the system and actually start playing the darn thing when I buy it. Having to hook the thing up to the internet and put in a long ass code wastes time I could have spent playing the game.
