A lot of people on the internet think twilight, justin beiber, etc are crap. They are also very popular and have a tendency to pop up everywhere. Because of this fans make fun of them because it's entertaining. Why not eh, if teenage girls can enjoy schlock we can enjoy making fun of it.

As a MAN with no interest whatsoever in what teenagers are interested in, and knowing full well that they'd most likely consider me the most out of touch person on the planet, I do not spare a thought for their music, movies or fashion. It isn't designed for me so nor does it need my scathing critique. And as for indignation about what 'the Media' is doing to shove these fads and trends in my face: I don't pay attention and I haven't done for a very long time. I know the Media *dun dun dun!*Crack of thunder* isn't talking to me, the metal-head with hundreds of metal cds and the film lover with hundreds of foreign, art house and independent films which never see the inside of a Blockbuster. So I don't feel the need to object to the Media *dun dun dun!*Distant scream* either.

Could it be that many people have become to cynical 'back in my day' fogies they always promised they'd never become?

I'm on board with you. I've never understood all the hating on Justin Bieber/Miley Cyrus/etc. etc. Calling them "the worst thing to happen to music, humanity is doomed". Did everyone forget about people like Jesse McCartney? Or Britney Spears? Give it a few years and a new person will emerge, and all the attention will move from Bieber to them.

As for why they do it? Probably because pre-teens, boys and girls, are easy targets to make fun of. They're old enough that you're not really insulting a child, but young enough that attacking them is simple.
This about sums it up, really. Let me tack on another thing: Adults really like hurling disdain at Kids, because they have stopped instinctively liking everything Kids like. Remember when anyone who was in high school thought Pokemon was a stupid kid's thing that you'd all grow out of when you got old enough to see how dumb it was? Remember when Britney Spears was a new thing, and the Spice Girls weren't on their way out? Remember how lots of people ragged on them too?

This is a thing. Every generation, once they get around their mid-20s, starts having heavy disdain for anything the kids are doing. It's a cycle. They are entirely convinced that the focus of their nostalgia is somehow objectively better than the current New Thing that's around for kids their former age. Honestly, despite not really caring for Kesha's music, she is really not any worse than Britney Spears was. It's just that I have all these shiny memories of putting Britney's first CD on my boom box and dancing around the house when I was a kid, and so I still like her music today, in the same way I like reading a silly novel once in a while. I am aware that this isn't Musical Wonder, but it's *fun.*

Justin Bieber is not the end of the world. High School Musical is not the end of the world. The new Nickelodeon cartoons are not the end of the world.

Chances are, if you were 10 years old right now, *you would like them too.*

Yup I don't get it either. People are free to like whatever they want. Doesn't mean I gotta like it but you're free like pop culture. (katy perry is a bombshell though and I want to sex that womanz)

Ripping on teenagers won't change anything, there will always be teenagers.

Complaining about ripping on teenagers won't change a thing, there will always be old farts like us who think the younger generation is batshit insane.

And the cycle of life continues ...

I don't have a particular problem with the 'tween wave' musicians. Sure I hate their music but I don't have to listen to it and the growing theme of "hahahahahaha stupid X person. I shall insinuate that this male lacks a male reproductive system and their is an aroma of fecal matter about him." It's just a boring theme of people being judgemental towards whatever fad is going on

Well, part of the issue is that it goes both directions. Of course, it had to start somewhere, I'm sure, but I imagine that could have easily just been someone like me struggling with frustration that everyone else seems to be in the dark about how amazing some music is! At least back when I was 14-16.
A lot of the other part is a lot of it comes from younger people, I think. Younger in that many of us are still forming our world views and solidifying our opinions, and strong reactions to those outside of some group are one of the ways we try to settle ourselves in some group and legitimize our feelings on things. It's just a natural part of the way these things work.

I'm sure there is also an element of fear contributing to it, because it does often seem like these teenage-girl-fads drive a significant part of the culture, and they are often not worthy of doing such a thing. In my opinion, Twilight isn't exactly neutral in its potential contribution to society, for example.

Lol, I liked this. Good comment.

First the thread that was against people reacting to people starting threads with "Am I the only one...?" and now a thread against people reacting to teenage girl fads...that begins with "Am I the only one".

...I am literally going to die from meta.

OT: Yes, they will fade into insignificance. Which is why I have to hate while I can, so when they do, they don't do it in style.

(Really though when someone makes s*** music it's your responsibility to tell them it's s*** whether it's going to make a difference or not. :D)

I have no strong feelings about anything teenagers like at the moment, because as other posters have said, I recognise that Twilight, Justin Bieber and the rest are not for me.

Without substantial effort, I have never even heard a Justin Bieber song. Unless you count the epic Slipknot/Justin Bieber mashup:

It's a reminder that yes, the music people liked when I was a teenager was also rubbish. And that's ok, because sometimes you can still make something magical from it.

It?s what you call a bandwagon. Also, the internet is basically a breeding ground for saddos that want to let off some steam by insulting strangers that will never meet them face-to-face.

To be honest, I hear more about Justin Bieber from whiny teenage boys on Facebook than I do from teenage girls on Facebook who are fans of him. Yeah, none of us have to like these fads, and it?s annoying with them popping up all the time on radio and TV, but they?ll just disappear and be replaced by another shitty thing in a couple of years anyway. So just do your best to ignore it. There are better things in life to complain about.

They, and most other victims of this trend tend to sell sex to kids.

Which is a pretty good reason for hating them I think.
No, they don?t. Except for Miley Cyrus, who was spawned on the Disney Channel. But One Direction and Jonas Brothers? They?re just your run-of-the-mill boy bands. Rihanna and Lady Gaga are aimed at teenage girls, who are going to use their newly developed body without understanding it, no matter what.

Teenage girls have terrible taste and they must constantly be reminded of that.

So we tell them that the things they like are dumb in between pulling their hair and trying to come to terms with the funny feelings they stir inside of us.

Honestly, I find these guys to be confusing. When I hate something I just ignore it. I really dislike rap, so I don't listen to rap. I hate country music, so I avoid country music. I cannot for even a single second believe that they have a harder time avoiding Bieber than I have avoiding two whole genres of music. It's pathetic really. They truly are mere novices in the art of apathy.
You know how hard it is to ignore something mainstream? Turn on the radio , and everything you will hear is mainstream . Get on a bus , you will hear girls singing bieber songs . Go to the city , you will see beider hair does , and beiger t-shirts , and posters and ... Well you get the idea .

OT: i read twilight out of curiosity , it's terrible . I've heard beiber songs , they are terrible. Katy perry is hot , but i wouldn't spend more that 5 minutes talking to her . Teenage girls are very vocal ( and annoying ) about what they like and what they feel and that's annoying . There is nothing more naive ( than a teenage girl , they go from super intelligent as children , become really stupid as teenagers , then go back to being really intelligent in adulthood . At least men are consistantly dumb :) . I'm more annoyed at teenage girls than anything else .
Firstly, not everyone who cuts their hair that way is mimicking Bieber. That's just the way my hair grows.

Secondly, if I can ignore two genres of music, you better damn well believe you can ignore one singer. Oh no, they're playing that Bieber song, on the bus. Maybe you should just read a book or listen to your own damn music. Oh no, pop on the pop music station! Maybe you should stop listening to that fucking station. Oh no, young girls who like Bieber! Maybe you should stop hanging out with young girls you creep. How fucking hard is that?

A lot of people are getting sick of mainstream music (like AAA video games ) becoming homogenized, aka things like boy and girl bands and singers who often don't and can't sing live and wouldn't know a musical instrument if it was put in front of them.

That and a lot of people seem to have the perception that because this sort of music is not aimed at them that its shit because they said so without giving a thought to peoples personal tastes. I mean lets face it if we all liked the same bands/music ect life would be fucking boring. Reminds me of a guy I know who was ranting about how he hates pop ect but Queen (the british rock band ) were his favourite band. Apparently he hasn't listened to any of their albums post 1980.

TLDR version, these people are easy targets for hate because they are for a lot of people who are not teens and they see people like Bieber ect as all that is wrong with music.

We all have our sexuality-tickling schlock. Last time I checked, Dead or Alive didn't stop being stupid.

Just let everyone have their share of bullshit pie. :3

I disrespect what they symbolise.
I find Katy perry a good singer and performer but her lyrics are awful. Her music must be good otherwise why is she popular. But lyrically shallow.

When someone makes a statement like "Justin Bieber is so talented." because he can stutter "Baby" on a track auto-tuned, people who know better are going to make a different opinion.

When someone without talent (Kim Kardassian) makes millions of dollars, no one is going to be impressed with anything they do.

Agreed, why put so much energy into hate when it hardly takes anything to live in ignorance of it all. I have heard short clips of Justin Bieber from advertising and I don't think I have ever heard a full song. What I hear is far from my kind of music, but as long as no-one is forcing me to listen to it why should I care? He was playing here a few months ago and from what I heard there were riots in the streets over it, but I didn't even know that until my mom told me on the phone (she doesn't live in the area and she knew more than me).

However let's not focus on teen fads here. I am getting tired of any kind of hate on the internet. Online passes, games that turned out worse than we expected, we do this to everything.
