There is no reason for this topic to exist. You know damn well that you're just going to make people angry by creating it. In case you haven't considered it, there are people on this forum with family in Japan, and there are people on this forum who live in Japan themselves. Can I say I really care about the people individually? No. But I do feel bad that I can't do anything to help those who are suffering.

However, in the so oft mis-attributed words of Evelyn Beatrice Hall, "I disapprove of what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

I understand that it was devastated but I'm not freaking out about it. Japan usually trains for stuff like this and know how to handle it. If anything, I'm more concerned about the idiots in California who WALKED out to find out what was happening. Japan can take care of itself quite well despite the nuclear emergency but America needs to smarten up to tsunamis more. It should be standard for any state on the coast to learn.

I know what you mean, I found myself in this position while talking to a friend the other day, basically I started talking about how its lucky that I live in a country where natural disasters never strike, Ireland
Ah, sure in fairness we get some fierce rain every now and then.

It's not within human nature to care about someone we've never met, I still do though
Bollocks. If it was not in humman nature news and reality show's would never be as popular as they are.
Reality shows are narratives, or at least presented to us as such. International news isn't that popular (except for extreme cases like this) most people just watch the local news that could affect them.

Hey, I'm glad someone posted this. Although our views on not caring are a little different, considering you just quite frankly could care less. I DO care less. Although I don't particularly wish ill upon them, I almost find it funny. Weird right? But seriously, (I hope I don't get flamed) But the whole damn anime creating, style producing country could get sucked to the bottom of the ocean and I'd still be sitting there like, "lol cool story bro." Although it's wrong, I can't help but worry about my own problems, sitting in a little suburban house in a little Canadian town.

Err, to say the least, I would find going through all that like a fun adventure. Don't get hit in the head by the rocks and make it to the top floor. But this is all coming from a weird kids perspective so I won't elaborate any further <.

So for all the kids, at my school, at your school, all over the world that are like "OMG SHOULD WE HELP? SHOULD THE US HELP?! WE SHOULD HELP!"

1 Go ahead, I don't give a shit whether you do or don't
2 The crisis actually boosts Japanese economy, hence why marketers and investors make so much dough from wars and natural disasters - PRODUCTION!

It's all a big ploy and circle in our world. Furthermore, why'd the fucking Japanese government put ANY nuclear reactors on their land, which they KNOW is seismic, and, oh yeah. IT'S AN ISLAND. Hence the waves, omfg?!
and this is such a big god damn surprise for all these people. This kind of thing continues to happen, over and over, but greed and ignorance keeps the cycle going.

I spent allot of time caring, to eventually learn that not caring is the best way to stray from the cycle. So you can all stand there like "omfg y dis hapen nature shootin her lazerz?!".

You're all retarded, and if you're that concerned, well you're retarded too. No-one seemed to care that much when it was Haiti, or a country that isn't wealthy.

I wanted to address this. Chernobyl only got as bad as it did, due to the secretive soviet government. During the meltdown, people living in an extremely dangerous proximity remained there as their leaders never told them to do other wise. Which is why all the cases of thyroid cancer and mutations occurred. The people where only told to leave, AFTER the fact.

I've mega studied the topic, so there you go. It /can't/ turn into another Chernobyl. The fear here should be 2 things.

1. The winds from japan tends to blow east across the pacific, so it will in due time blow over to the continent of America.

2. As the nuclear gas (if a full scale meltdown occurs) travels across the pacific, it will undoubtedly rain. Nuclear rain, causing many aquatic deaths. Which in many ways fulfills biblical prophecies, but that's another issue with the rise of Islam and all.

and all this "suffering" is the topic of our ability to not care. If you care, your existence within this thread is meaningless. So yes, this thread does have a meaning. You're the one making US angry by invading OUR rights of not giving a shit.

Btw. Nice quote we don't care about. It made our not caring a little more justified, although we didn't care to begin with.

Well I haven't found myself falling to my knees in a darth-vader-esque 'NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!' but that's not to say i don't sympaphise. The death toll is over 6,000 now with another 10,000 people still missing....and most likely dead. Sorry but it's probable that that's the case by now, and to not feel anything for a tragedy on that scale, regardless of the nation, is a little strange. I'm not saying you should be bursting into tears or ripping your hair out, but you should be feeling more for these people than you apparently do. x

Was it a tragedy? Certainly, I could acknowledge it on an intellectual level. But on an emotional level it didn't even register. I was far more concerned about [my friend] than I was for the victims of the tragedy. If there was something reasonably within my power to help the people of the tragedy then I would have done it. But there wasn't. Thus what point was there in getting upset about it?
I think this is the case for most people. You do CARE, but you don't actually feel much of anything. And that's natural! It's hard to honestly care about people you don't know personally, and that's for the best; one person can only handle so much emotion, and there a thousand tragedies that we don't cry over simply because we don't KNOW about them. Limited empathy is inevitable, and it's not a bad thing. As crazy as it may sound, it makes perfect sense that you would feel unaffected by the deaths of hundreds. As long as you can at least acknowledge it on a conscious level (not an emotional level), you're fine.
