Am I the only one who realizes achievements are worthless?

I don't agree with you one bit. I won't even go into why I think achievements are worthwile inclusions in games.
Sure, nothing really suffers from not having achievements, but if a game does have'em, it's always an advatage.
The fact that Steam has achievements is an advantage as well.

They are useful in Team Fortress 2...

It's bragging rights. I don't see the point in playing games just for achievements, but they're fun little challenges. Not worth anything, but cool to have. It adds a bit of replay value, and I can also brag about having Still Something to Prove on Left 4 Dead 2. They're there for fun. I wish more games would be like Team Fortress 2 and reward you more than giving you a number for getting achievements, but they're little fun things and personal challenges.

Achievements are fun little challenges to play towards in a game. The overall idea is to try and make gaming MORE FUN. If you check my xbox live score, you'll see I have almost all the achievements in one game, and a couple of smaller ones here and there. Frankly, they aren't important at all, but people get them to try and have fun with games. At least, that's what I think.

I don't care about achievements as such, but my friends are constantly battling with each other to see who has the better achievements and who has more etc.

I might need some new friends

Personally I look on achivements as something to do when you've already beaten a game... Things that you never would have done if there wasnt an achivement for it.
Agree. There is an achievement for finishing a mission in Hitman: Blood Money with exactly 47 kills. It added 30 minutes worth of longevity to the game.

Achievements are worth nothing, but I love collecting them. One of my favourite things to do on Xbox is try and farm achievements, see how high I can get my Gamerscore. Me & my buddy Tom seem to be having a competition going on with Gamerscore. He's kicking my ass though. Around 1000 more than me :( he can afford more games! Not fair!

Achievements don't have any physical worth, but they give you a feeling of worth and accomplishment. Plus, they have pretty pictures!

See those badges next to everyone's name? My theory is, if they are hard to get ones, then they are an achievement hunter ingame as well...

Some achievements are pretty fun to get, (some of the ones in GTA IV) but then there are other achievements that you are forced to get,(achievements you get during the "main quest") which I find kind of dumb.

Are achievements worth nothing? Yeah, pretty much. But I have fun with them, they're a little mini-quest in their own right.
i agree. they give you the ability to give yourself a pat on the back after completing a game

anc[is]I just read the latest Experienced Points, and he puts achievements in the list of things steam gives us. Now I'm not saying anything bad about the article or Shamus, but once again I facepalmed and sighed. Who cares? They do absolutely nothing. I have never, ever, seen anyone talk down to someone about not having an achievement, and considering this is the internet, that's astounding. I just wanted to know if there was anyone out there who agrees with me.
well it gives the players a common goal incase they want to take a break from the story

people also like to think of achivements as a braging opertunity for example

i recently got every achivement on L4D 1 and 2, some of my friends havent and when they bring up the subject i casualy remind them that im a little more better then they are

Not me, i love achievements, not for the bragging rights or the points but because im a pretty OCD completionist and love the little "BING" telling me ive achieved something awesome toward my final goal of 100% completion. I love achieving things, new feats of awesome, even if it isnt in a box with some points, il always aim for a faster nuke on COD or a more efficient run on L4D.

I may have almost 25,000 gamersore but it doesn't mean im a achievement hunter, i just have a lot of games, and most people don't understand it. It feels good to get an achievement, no doubt, but they're not that amazing and to me gamerscore is just a number.

well in TF2 the achievements unlock new guns and jars of urine. But on the whole, i agree with you.

I just like the little "bloop" sound
