every time I hear about this game people talk about how amazing it was, but when I picked up a "game of the year edition" copy and popped it in my xbox, it really didn't wow me at all. the plot seemed vaguely silly, the entire world was prerendered and brown, the combat was complete crap, and unless you were paying attention it was easy to lose track of where you were supposed to go.. is it just me who had these problems? because i feel like i may be missing the point or something

The problem was...you popped it in your Xbox.

Or so a few annoying PC gamers will say, at least.

Having it on both myself, I can say the PC version is leaps better, but the basics are unchanged.

If you don't like the fundamentals, you aren't going to like the PC version much better. Without heavy modding, and then it's not really the same game is it?

My problem with it, oddly enough, was the LACK of enemy scaling. I felt punished for exploring! Ran into a cave, got raped by a few mages. Ran into a shrine/burial place, got raped by a ton of undead. Ran into a DAEDRIC shrine, didn't take 3 steps before dying.

That said, you should see the Telvanni towers. They are a sight to behold, even years later.

I wasn't a fan of it. I think I made it through the first few towns and then pretty much had no clue what I was doing or where I was meant to go. And the combat system is kind of shoddy at best. I definitely did enjoy Oblivion though (despite the obscene number of glitches I had).

I definitely think that time diminishes how a game will impress you. I think its one of those, you have to play it in this timespan after it came out, after that it quickly devalues. Granted this isn't the case for everyone, but I think for the majority it is true.

I played it first on the Xbox and loved it.

In fact I am playing it on the Xbox right now because it feels more authentic that way (since that's how I originally played it)... and because its harder to cheat :p

Anyway OP I'd have to say that I can't entirely blame you. Morrowind, these days requires a specific taste... it just hasn't aged well for those who never played it in its prime.

I really like the story, and teh epicness of the world and how powerful you can become. However, yes, the world is brown and easy to get lost in, so i guess i had half your porblems, and just didnt care.

Personally I found it to be a great game and preferred it to Oblivion. The graphics might be dated now, but the core gameplay is still pretty solid. The best thing about it though was how open it was, and also how unforgiving it could be. It didn't fence you in, but if you felt like stepping out into the big bad world before you were really ready it would rape you unapologetically. I think a lot of people who dislike the game do so because they don't have the patience it requires, the game doesn't hold your hand all the way like so many rpgs do now (even going so far as to let you destroy the story by killing plot essential characters permanently), so you really have to put some time in to get your character to where you want him to be.

Also, I'm ignorant on this topic, but can you get mods for it on the xbox version? God help you if you can't take cliff racers out of the game :p

No mods for Xbox, but after the first few hours of the game Cliff Racers only become annoying because of the awful sound they make.

Point of advice kid. There are well over six and a half BILLION people in the world. So no, you are never the only one.

I got the GOTY Edition for my XBox, still have it, and, after many years of running around, stealing, looting, murdering and hoarding epic profits. haven't beaten it.

I do wish that the XBox had mod support, just for the fact I might be able to turn my character into Vivec (My custom guy's stronger than hi, probably because I killed Vivec... oops :p)

I hate these "Am I the only one who whatever" threads.

That said, I didn't like Morrowind either. Mostly because of the aforementioned "run into the first cave I see and get owned by mages" issue. It soured the rest of the game quickly for me.

Oblivion on the other hand had the opposite problem, and if you didn't pre-plan your leveling properly, you were prone to getting destroyed by wolves at later levels. Better to not level up in that game most of the time.

EDIT: Cliff Racers can go to hell.

I really liked Morrowind so my opinion is a bit biased, but one of the things that I really liked was that the games enemies weren't scaled. I can see how you can feel punished for exploring and I got that feeling too, but I think it was much better then the opposite.

Eventually, in it you could take down anything you want, which was awesome. I prefer it over the opposite like in Oblivion where you would encounter random bandits with endgame armor.

At this point, I've played so much Morrowind that I've forgotten what it was like to be new to the game. Many people complain about Morrowind's slow beginning, difficulty, vague journal system, etc. but these problems just don't affect me anymore now that I know where everything and everyone is and exactly what to do for every quest. But what is great about this game is that even though I am at that point, I still find enough value in it to keep playing. That is the hallmark of a good game.

I've played it a crap ton and I still despise the Journal system... accept when it says funny things like, "... silly girl, she doesn't understand what the bandit was really after. I feel for her loss." I think at that point my character had developed another personality. D:

I didn't care for the game at first. Then I got sick such that if I got out of a sitting/lying position I'd nearly pass out. It was the last game I'd played, so I played it for a week while I got better. After getting past the first couple towns and cities into the Telvanni areas the game improved immensely for me.

Except the melee combat. Fuck sake, if I stick the enemy with the pointy end of a sword, they should get hurt.

Never had an interest in it. I know a lot of people say it's the best Elder Scrolls game ever, but two things made it a surety I would never pick it up:

1) Bugs.

2) Elves.

I'm just sick of elves in general, and bugs are something I prefer to kill, not ride.

I don't think it's deserving of all the rampant praise it seems to recieve on these boards, but it's a decent game nonetheless.

The fans could really do with turning it down a notch though. It was not Haruhi's Gift to Gaming.

Its a bethesda game. They couldn't make a complete product if their lives, the lives of their friends and family, and their pet's lives depended on it. Half their staff got their jobs through nepotism, thus know almost nothing about what they're supposed to be doing.

Thus, the PC modding community stepped in. Fixed all the big glaring problems, a lot of the smaller ones, and, added a whole boatload of awesome crap. Allowing one to not get bogged down in the crippling flaws of the game, and just immerse one's self into an amazing world.

Also, I don't think you know what "pre-rendered" means. Pre-rendered means something like myst or most of the content in the psx final fantasies.
