I play fighting games for the story.

And somehow that reason makes people hate me. Not that I'll care, I'll still enjoy games like P4A and Blazblue

You're never the only one in anything.

I don't see the problem, but that's just me.

What.

Did the other 10% disappear into the Void? Did they divide by zero?

OT: I don't play fighting games online because I prefer to go head to head with my brother locally, rather than face lag and frustration online.

I usually dislike playing games online.

I tried getting back into league of legends and oh boy, this game is washy. It's a game that forces you to work with a team. Literally, you can't play this game without communication for the most part, AND, generally most people on there act like assholes. So it is a really bad mixture.

I like shooters for the most part, I like Team Fortress 2, Halo, Counter Strike and Killing Floor. Not that Call of Duty crap.

When it comes to fighting games, it's online lag that usually turns me off.

I like singleplayer games. :)

Look, I ain't saying you're bad at fighting games, but unless you're playing the most broken fighting game of all time, it's a non issue.

Button mashers shouldn't even be a problem for anyone who 'actually uses skill', that's a fact.

I'll be the first to say that button mashers throw me off at first because they're movement is erratic and unpredictable, but once you go on the defensive, you can destroy them easily.
(Sort of relevant:) It's the same with newbie fencers irl. At first they really throw you because they're just waving the sword around madly (often in some sort of windmilling action). But once you take control of the fight (and preferably wrap up their blade in a nice bind!) then it's fine.

OT: I hardly ever play games online in general. I prefer to play LAN or local multiplayer with my boyfriend.

I haven't played online in a long time. But for what I remember from playing DOA 4, you would rise to a certain rank (I got up to A+ and could not advance any further). At that rank you would usually figithing players slightly better than you. So I didn't really experienced what you describe.

I would much rather fight the CPU on the hardest difficulty. 40% of the people use the most overpowered, easiest character to use. The other 40% mash. 10% of the players actually use skill and timing like myself. But you can still get owned by either party. Which is why I will never buy a fighting game in my life besides P4A.

Discuss lack of skills in games and easy combos that instant kill.
P4A is awsome, i haven't played it online yet...i don't usually play fighting games online, but i at least give it a go at least once

I don't like playing multiplayer online for fighting games anyways, such as Mortal Kombat 2011 which I just play offline, not because I refuse to play online, it just I don't find it very fun.

I think your just being lazy and not learning to counter.
I used to have problems in SSF4AE with Ryu hadoken spammers almost every other game and it was really frustrating up until the point where one day I just went into training and practiced my timing against them for about an hour and it worked rather well if your having keep having the same problems your obviously not learning and that is what you need to do to play fighters.
Also in almost any game when people talk about tier lists I have to just start laughing because generally for 90% of players those lists don't matter one bit I have maybe once or twice faced a Seth that knew what he was doing with that character just because he is S tier doesn't mean he is able to trounce everyone. I have lost to Kens that mash shoruyken and I had problems with it but guess what if your willing to be flexible in the way you play you will win a lot more often.
Also Fighter A.I can be stupidly easy or you can find a combo that exploits something so I tend not to play with it very much (Melty Blood I am looking at you.)

Well those games are basically VNs with little fights in them and I get that but if your playing games like Street Fighter for the story then your probably crazy.

I play Mortal Kombat online, while it can be annoying fighting Scorpion, Smoke and Ermac over and over there super predictable.

Wait for Teleport punch, Block, then cage them.

to be honenst when someone comes at me with a character like Mileena or Stryker its much harder.

Yep. You are the only person in the whole world who does this.

OT: I'm pretty much the same. People online just tend to kick, kick, kick over and over. Some of them have all the spare time in the world and can seem to perfect every move. I don't have all day to spend on the xbox (seriously. I think I had Tekken 6 for about four days and was running into people with thousands of wins/losses. I know not everyone is like that but I don't see how people can get into so many fights within a few days of owning it :/) so I'm not as good as them and constantly getting your arse handed to you sucks.

And whenever I do win against someone who thinks they're all that, I get a stream of "u *****! u suk, n00b!" messages.

Out of curiosity what fighters do you play exactly? Most of them out today generally are quite balanced. If you want a really well balanced game, check out Tekken 6, sure there are tiers but no characters really stand out as overpowered.

By the way, just as a tip, people generally tend to improve when they play against real people. The CPU is nice and all, but it doesnt change tactics like a real player would. And if you were using skill and timing, people online shouldnt be too much of a problem. If they still are, just keep trying until you figure out a counter to their moves.

That or just master the basics with just one character. For example, In Tekken 6, I use Kazuya, I found he has a nice balance of speed and power, with a good variety of moves. I dont know shit about frames or punishing, but what I have done is I've played with him enough to figure out a lot of his simple moves, and situations they would be good in. Ive started to win a lot more often online thanks to that

As a few people have mentioned, I avoid online modes in games as a general rule because of stuff like lag and disconnections. However, there's another element that I sometimes have difficulty putting into words. Essentially, when I play a game with friends in the same room I have a sort of camaraderie that I just don't get when I'm playing with people online. It could be the lack of familiarity with the other players, or that I can't actively speak to them, or it could just be that a lot of people in online gaming communities are just dickheads who like to troll or insult other players depending whether they're winning or losing.

I think it was Yahtzee who said, "It's just not the same if I can't reach over and smack somebody for being a douche bag," but I've also noticed that when that's a factor, they aren't even being jerks anyways. Unless you're maybe in an arcade or an actual competition, but I don't go into that sorta thing. I just don't like competitive gaming in general. Much like sports, there's too much hostility from both players and watchers.

I don't play many fighting games anymore. It's true I'm not very good at them, don't have the knack for remembering a billion movesets and combos, plus my reflexes have never been up to par with that sorta genre. I mainly keep to things like Smash Brothers or sometimes Dragon Ball now. Although I used to play Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, and the various Capcom titles. Still like a lot of the characters and universes they've made for them, I just don't care for the gameplay.

The only fighting game I play is Blazblue and even then I don't go online too much. I love the game but I suck at fighting games and cannot read the fight at all so I usaully just flail around untill the enemy grazes me once at which point im thrown into a combo that takes 5 mins to finish and takes of over half my health.

I usaully get bored since I spend most of the match just gettibng juggled in a combo.

I don't really play fighting games that much at all, but I can feel your frustration. I've seen many a friend toppled by the ruthless corruption of an unskilled button masher/cheap character user.

[sub]Personally, I just find a move that looks pretty and spam it over and over[/sub]

Except for the people who post here saying they also refuse, yeah, I'd say you're the only one who refuses to play online. I don't play fighting games often and I hate people using OP characters or tactics, but I don't REFUSE to play it.

I'll play a fighting game online on somewhat rare occasions. Whenever someone button mashes or spams I just play the waiting game until I find a opening then proceed to combo them into oblivion. As far as easy characters go, Mortal Kombat is full of scorpions since he can just be button mashed into full combo strings. All you have to do in that case is learn how to fight against that particular character and learn to expect that he/she will be chosen 8 times out of 10.
