It was indeed true for a period of time and they caught hell for it (rightfully so).

Finding the official servers can be a pain because plenty of people who rented servers and try to make them look like official servers (those people deserve plenty of hatred). Usually what I do is do a search for -[DICE]- and go through 2-3 pages of servers finding several that are actually hosted by Dice and favorite'ing them (full at the time or not). You can tell which are legit because in the server properties screen you can see the host listed at the bottom. Official servers will say "Dice" under the heading "Owner" and player-rented will have a Gamertag because it cannot be changed. Making a list of official servers of your favorite modes makes your search much faster in the future.

Does it need to be easier? Yes.
Do they need to make servers unable to be disguised as official? Yes.
But they do exist.

Paying for servers: This is usually fine, but it all depends on the community and the ratio of good to bad server admins. And there's an expectation that on consoles there will be at least some official servers, but they've all been converted to rentals.
This was a temporary issue. They didn't anticipate as many rentals as they got, so when the server slots got full they started overriding the official ones. Was only that way for 2-3 weeks and they added a bunch of official servers that cannot be overridden.
Rentals?
Most renters didn't play BF3 online because of the stupid online pass. I know because I was one of those renters. And even if it didn't, only one person can play a rental at a time.
I thought the online pass was a sign of desperation but they are getting really ridiculous. Is BF3 doing so badly that they have to try and get every cent out of their loyal fans?
But at the same time OP shouldn't be too surprised considering EAs well earned rep for being money grubbers. And at the same time I can't really fault EA for doing it as a business since it seems they can really sucker their fans...and those people remain loyal fans. They're dicks but they're rich dicks; got to give them that.

It's a common figure of speech that has been around forever, learn to deal with it because the people that ***** about it are infinitely more annoying than the people who use it. It is beyond me why people choose to freak out about this phrase, yet leave some of the stupider one in tact.

You are not clever when you choose to complain about it.

OT: Yes, it's annoying, and I'm a little disappointed that CoD started the trend of the 20 dollar expansion pack and they followed it. I'm also kinda disappointed that the game is actually good enough to where I'll end up buying the next DLC

At no point has Dice told me I am unable to play this game as I haven't given them more money, I can keep loading it up, take my favorite weapons and blow things up. This hasn't changed, other people can blow stuff up with different weapons and they've paid for that. I have chosen not to and still have fun.

I don't really see the problem.

You can rent servers to play with your friends (or the public) with the settings and map rotation you like. This has nothing to do with renting the game from a store.

OT: It's not really that bad, people just use the fact that it's EA as a excuse to complain. Buying the Battlefield Premium service actually works out cheaper than buying all the DLC's separately and I was going to be buying them all anyway. I'm not a big fan of EA but I can't really argue with them in this case.

These are the guys who are considering methods to implement a system to make you pay for the bullets you're using in-game.

Just.....stop giving them your money.

Agreed. There are only two reasons to harass a person for using it:
-You're ignorant of what a figure of speech is.
OR
-You're aware, but are a petty asshole.

OT: The DLC stuff is fine. The server queue priority for official servers (I have no problem with it when clans allow priority to donators) isn't.

Please stop with the grammar nazi's crap - it's tedious.

OT: I find it refreshing that there is so much extra support and dlc for games these days - i think premium is a great way of buying all the dlc in one transaction at a reduced cost. The exlcusive weapon skins and early dlc is a great bonus.
There's no reason not to get the dlc if you think you're going to be playing bf3 for that long.
My only gripe is with the q-jumping - it's really not on.

tl;dr - if you dont like bf3, don't get the dlc; you wont be losing out either way.

(p.s. - fukc bieber...)

Paying for servers, paying to unlock stuff, and now paying for Battlefield Premium which gives you new weapons and such you can't get otherwise?

Am I the only person thinking they are going a little money crazy with all this? I love the game but it just seem like their money grubbing. What do you guys think?
Well lets get some perspective here. This is the first game I can ever think of where console players had the ability to rent servers while PC has had that for...since PC gaming began? The closer consoles get to PC the more theyre going to have to offer the same experience as PCs, this is just one of those options and honestly I thought it was needed back with Bad Company 2.

Paying to unlock is paying for convienance. Its not buying power since you can get every other thing in the game by just playing it. Its very similar to the League of legends business model. Now I think that this is fair because someone whos coming to the game now, months after its release is going to hit a brick wall against practiced players with better setups. Let's even toss out the fact that people who get in helicopters/jets without unlocks are seen as detrimental to the team. Now theres 2 options to counteract this. 1. soldier through it till they get their unlocks or 2. pay for the unlocks. I dont think thats such a bad thing and keep in mind that the payed for unlocks dont go away either

Finally theres battlefield premium. I believe its cheaper to get it then buy all the DLC down the road so on that basis alone I wouldnt call it money grubbing. I dont think anything is specific to BFP though if Im mistaken please point it out to me. What you've been seeing is the stuff from the close quarters DLC accessed with BFP. Now to be fair, I have one major problem with BFP and that is the "exclusivity" with guides and other learning tools. Right now the game does an abysmal job of teaching people how to play and I think guides/strategies should be part of the core experience. There really needs to be a tutorial for people and I would even go so far as to say people need to complete it before they can enter multiplayer

The fact that, rather than make new servers or renting out disused servers, they made it so people can cheaply buy a server and to such an extent that you are not guaranteed a spot on an official one is infuriating. Player run servers are cool but the fact that the entire system has been shifted onto the players, with most multiplayer being based on luck on finding a server and then a good one as well as the mood of the owner. They probably have this written in a multilayer agreement but im annoyed that they just decided to do this one day, I hadnt heard anything about it until shortly beforehand and neither had anyone I know. I will never trust them again with multiplayer, it feels like they just sold off what was the multiplayer to makea profit wiithout any care for what the customers wanted or even knew about. They can do it, but it feels like they shouldnt be able to.

On the server business. They have handled it so that DICE owned servers are a rarity and you must queue to get in. It has created alack of convenience because youhave to wait for definite normal multiplayer or take a gamble with the player owned stuff, which is so damn cheap to partake in there are many, many crap servers of all different shapes and shades of bullshit. Paying for unlocks is buying power, more importantly unlocking things for vehicles is stupid and shouldnt be there in the first place. Its luck even getting one for starters and the fact that they are team property means, as you said, lower ranking people are even more of a hindrance. However its become a situation where the only way to really advance is to pay, which is not the desirable outcome. By this point they should just start new players off with the unlocks to put them on the same footing.

The sad thing is even though there will be these new maps, no one will play them. It'll be the same shit of Siene, Metro and Bazaar over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Not seen one of the back to Karkand maps in a looooong while (except IF I decide to play Camp Rush) and I expect it to be the same with the new maps.
Not sure why you don't get them, would depend on the server you are on. There are many Dice-run 'Back to Karkland' only servers which run a variety of modes. Epic Battle servers run all the big maps with an emphasis on vehicles, this includes Gulf of Oman (a 'BtK' map). Many of the TDM and SQDM servers have quite a few 'BtK' maps. Honestly if you aren't seeing any maps from the expansion, you have to be playing on original BF3 only servers, because BtK is represented in every mode.
Might just be the PS3 version, I've just played about with the filters and still all I'm seeing is 4/6 pages of mostly Op Metro......with "6000% ticketszszs lololol". Does put me off at times.

Well assuming it's the same as Xbox (no idea if it is) don't use the filters, do a search for -[DICE]- and find the official servers, then just favorite them. Just have to weed through the unofficial ones pretending to be official ones.
