The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the two Female lead singers Nightwish had.

Yesss I've been waiting for this thread. Let's not forget Nightwish's hopefully new lead singer, Floor Jansen

Also see Simone Simons of Epica and Sharon Den Adel of Within Tempation. Female vocalists rock.

Since quite a few posters have taken my initial suggestions I will go with The Birthday Massacre. At least I think they fit into the "metal" genre. I honestly can't tell with all the sub-genres going on.

I'm not usually into female vocalists, but here's the ones I like:

Anneke van Giersbergen from the Dutch band The Gathering, also does some stuff with Devin Townsend. I am in love with her voice.

Also this new band Black Moth have a great female vocalist.

And a similar Black Sabbath type band

As the title states, I'm looking for bands or even solo rock-stars in metal and hard rock that preferably have a talented female vocalist, but at least have a notable and talented female member somewhere in the group. Yes, this may be sexist to ask. No, I don't want this to be a sexism thread even if it seems that way. It's just that when I stop to think about it, I can't come up with many females in rock unless it's soft rock or some pop / rock bastardization and their discography is composed almost entirely of relationship songs.

There are only three that come to mind when I think of females in hard rock or metal - Amy Lee from Evanescence, Elena Siegman from the Nazi Zombies songs, and I believe Joan Jett from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (I've only heard "I Love Rock and Roll" from her, but I think she counts). This kinda baffles me that I know so few great females in hard rock and beyond, as I'm positive that there are just as many female metalheads as male ones and thus logically there should be a fair amount of females in the actual industry. Female vocals can also be incredibly badass in a good rock song and can provide a completely different flavor, for a lack of a better term, to a song's style.

So who are some great females in rock that you know of? Feel free to post youtube vids on people you listen to. Indies are perfectly fine (even pony metal), as long as it isn't yourself of course. Like I mentioned earlier, I do NOT want this to be another thread on sexism; I just want some good examples of females in hard rock or metal as I'm certain that they must exist. Keep it civil everyone, and let's rock out.
1. Tarja Terunin (Nightwish former)

2. Charlotte Wessels (Delain)

3. Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation)

4. Lzzy Hale (Halestorm)

5. Andrea Ferro (Lacuna Coil)
Andrea's a dude (unfortunate name). The band's lead singer is Cristina Scabbia, who is very much both female and talented.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Civet, they're an all-female band.

Dalriada has a very skilled female vocalist who combines singing with raw grunting. They're a fairly unknown folk metal band from Hungary and way, way, WAY better than the abundance of fairy tale piffle that gets mentioned in here.

I hope you like it.

And then there are (or were) The Distillers. The group is now disbanded and lead singer Brody started her own (less successful) project, but I was a huge fan years ago. I touched her leg during a gig! I haven't washed that hand ever since.

Obsidian Shell are pretty sweet & their album is also free to download. I wouldn't really consider them hard rock/metal but as Evanescence was mentioned in the OP I guess it's in the right sort of range...

Hmmm...wouldn't have counted Amy Lee (unless she's put out some new stuff different from her old stuff when I wasn't looking, which is quite possible), but if she counts, then most definitely Shirley Manson from Garbage.

I was recently introduced to a band called Rolo Tomassi. I saw them live and their singer Eva Spence caught me completely by surprise.

She's at her best with Danny Cavanagh of Anathema. They do really nice duos, that I adore.

I haven't listened to a lot of Evanescence's stuff, but I've heard a bit of their first album and would say that most of what I've heard besides "My Immortal" would qualify as hard rock at least. Then again, I'm not very good with the genre classifying. Can't speak much for any of their later albums, so I don't know if they went in a different direction after that.

As for Garbage, what I've heard from them is good but doesn't really seem like hard rock to me. Still enjoyed what I have heard from them though.

Females? What kind of Popeye shit is that? Ladies, women, or girls.

Outside of 80s rock & 90s grunge & alternative, the only time I have ever heard a woman's voice accompanied by guitar is a Japanese band called BARNABYS. They do the music for Mezzo DSA. Apparently rock music in the west is either a dead, underground, or warped hybrid artform, & in the east guitars are predominantly a boy-thing.

Captcha: One hit wonder.

I am disappointed nobody mentioned Unleash the Archers (did a quick Ctrl + F, sorry if I missed it).

Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love em.
