I did sound engineering at University and did sound for Rollo Tomassi [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolo_Tomassi] a few times before they started touring nationally (and once afterwards, but they brought their own sound engineer that time).

They had a reputation for being a) brilliant and b) breaking desks.

When we sound check we'd get a level from the singer, Eva, who would say "one, two" in a very quiet, 5-year-old girl voice, and we'd set the levels appropriately.

Then they'd start playing and a loud, flawless death metal scream would come from her. We have now idea how her tiny frame could contain such lungs. Cue frantic scrambling as we set the levels on her microphone to something sensible, then sit back and enjoy it.

Savages is an all-female band. Their debut album drops today and it's fantastic.

Most of these have probably been named, but I'm going to roll them out anyway:

Simone Simons (Epica)
Tarja Turunen (Nightwish/solo)
Floor Jansen (After Forever/ReVamp)
Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy/Leaves' Eyes)
Charlotte Wessels (Delain)
Lady Angellyca (Forever Slave)
Sharon del Adel (Within Temptation)
Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering)
Maria Brink (In This Moment)
Sabine Edelsbacher (Edenbridge)
Francesca Chiara (The LoveCrave)

They'd have to be my favourites (not necessarily in that order). If I had to pick my top three... probably Liv, then Floor, then... Sabine (with Simone close behind).

EDIT: Also Courtney Cox (no not that one) from The Iron Maidens, but mainly because of her big fake boobs.

I think the only group with less representation would be the blacks. Seriously, outside of derrick green of Sepultura and Abasi Tosin from Animals as leaders, I cannot think of anyone.
Didn't Killswitch engage have a black singer for a bit? Plus I know Alice in Chains has a black vocalist. And tosin is awesome enough to count as like, 4 or 5 people.
yeah, he is kind of metal's equivalent of jimi hendrix, if what I've heard is to be believed.

Tarja Turunen. One of the widest ranges of any singer alive today, and almost unbeatable tonal control. She's just insanely, insanely great.
(related: nightwish were fucking dumb for firing her, yeah she might have been a complete ***** but you aren't ever going to find a "replacement" for her, you're just going to have to lower your standards over and over until they finally fall low enough for someone else to fill the spot).

Halestorm's Lzzy Hale:

not only does she rock, but also she's hot
I second this entirely. She's a really good frontwoman, they're better live than they are on record. Usually they sound a bit too polished for me.

Eva Spence is crazy awesome.
You would never expect a woman that makes noises like that to also run a company that sells cushions.

Oh, and Kira was my favourite Black Flag bassist.

Anneke van Giersbergen from the Dutch band The Gathering, also does some stuff with Devin Townsend. I am in love with her voice.

She's at her best with Danny Cavanagh of Anathema. They do really nice duos, that I adore.
Indeed, I fucking love it with I find my favourite artists have worked together.

I am disappointed nobody mentioned Unleash the Archers (did a quick Ctrl + F, sorry if I missed it).

Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love em.
AAAAAAAHHHHHHH I love you so much right now (So much that I fixed your video link). UTA is from Victoria, BC, where I go to school, they're great live and cool people. Nice to see they have a bit of fame.

Also Cerebral Bore, how has nobody mentioned them? (As far as I could see) Really sucks that Som left them, but while she was there they put out Maniacal Miscreation, and what an album. Great vocalist, wherever she ends up next.

If you dont mind listening to things in Russian, there is always Arkona who has Masha Scream.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgXlUxDGFvU (song title translates roughly to Faces of the Imortal Gods, keep listening until you get to about the 350 mark, and you'll see where she got the name "Scream")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzgqKXPpd2g (song title roughly translates to In My Land, is about a traveler going from region to region, features multiple bands in multiple languages)

You've already named most of my top picks that would first have come to mind. I'm not too good with music genres, but as this is similar to my chosen taste in music I'm also fond of:

All Ends, Amaranthe, The Birthday Massacre, Dark Princess, Dawn of Destiny, Elis, Eyes Of Eden, Fireflight, Halestorm, HB, Icon For Hire, Indica, Innocens, Krypteria, Lacuna Coil, The Letter Black, Liv Moon, Lunatica, The Material, The Murder Of My Sweet, Nemesea, Pythia, Satyrian, Sirenia, Visions of Atlantis, We Are The Fallen, Xandria, Yotangor

Battlelore has melodic death metal influences, with a beauty and the beast vocal style. where you have male screaming, female singing, and some female screaming. And all their music is based on LOTR.

I think I've got one that passed people by;

Sabine Weniger (Scherer) from Deadlock
