I cannot believe that neither Liv Jagrell nor the Metal Queen of the World have been mentioned yet.

Dawn Crosby - Long dead lead singer of Trash Metal pioneers Detente. Still VERY listenable today.
Doro Pesch - more of a guilty pleasure. I remember standing in the front row of her concerts in the 80s. She's still around though.

And then of course there is Candace Kucsulain of Walls of Jericho. She shouts so beautifully it can make you cry.

Julie Christmas, criminally underrated and overlooked.

I could rave for days, one of my favourite vocalists of all time. Can range from sweet to guttural to unique vocal inflections. Brutal imagery, imaginative lyricism and she could probably kick our arses. I love it.

Coincidentally one of her albums is my avatar.
Seconded. I love her work with Made out of Babies.

Check out Suzi Quatro. She may be more famous to people from my generation as Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days. But to you kids who never watched that show, you can experience her music relatively clean. Her Wikipedia page says she was the first major breakthrough female artist that paved the way from everyone else named in this thread. I don't know about that, but whatever. More likely there were several female artists softening things up for those to come later, like Heart and the Runaways, although Joan Jett of the Runaways styled her hair like Suzi's, so Suzi was an influence on her, at least.

That said, I find her work kind of old-fashioned sounding. I can't really explain it. It sounds like stuff from the 50's or 60's that has not aged well. Nothing wrong with it, I guess, but not really to my taste. And I'm mostly into guitar rock from the 60's and 70's which is why I'm puzzled that I don't like Suzi's music very much. But there is no accounting for taste.

First two that came to mind,

Angela from Arch Enemy

and Lzzy Hale from Halestorm.

But there are several others, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Delain.

It would be remiss to not mention Jefferson Airplane featuring Grace Slick, since I insist of going back to the roots of things.

The interesting thing about Grace and her role in the band is that, for one, she wasn't the original female singer in the band. Originally it was Signe Toly Anderson who left the band when she had given birth. Second the role seemed to be more of a backing vocals role, which seemed to be typical of groups in the sixties. A bunch of dudes and one girl in a mini skirt and go-go boots. Airplane had a male lead singer, but Grace took the lead on several of their hits. I don't know if this was a significant change due to Grace or just the natural progression of things.

Female lead singers weren't uncommon in the 60's. e.g. Janis Joplin. But they were still rare enough to be remarkable.

Since every band I can think of has already been said, I shall instead mention this band. The Diablo Swing Orchestra. They're fucking Swing Metal!

<spoiler=Diablo Swing Orchestra>
Edit: It's shameful how long it took me to figure out how to embed a Youtube video.

Rolo Tomassi if Mathcore counts:

Hole verge into Hard Rock sometimes

Looking at the entries in this thread I'd say that the problem is some sort of viewer/listener bias, I'd guess that it's hard to distinguish a female voice among the heavier music than it is among samples in electronica or lighter parts of rock.

I agree dude, the best new all-female band since probably Warpaint. The singer gives out a huge Siouxxie Sioux inspired Post-Punk vibe, which i absolutely love...

I just like far too many Female singers and groups in Rock/Metal, but Shoegazing is probably the most dominant of all Alt Rock Genres in terms of female singers. The vocal style just seems to favor the female voice more, along with such genres as Dream Pop.

Also...my Avatar is of the Infamous Chan Marshall (a.k.a Cat Power), great Singer/Songwriter.

I'm not usually into female vocalists, but here's the ones I like:

Anneke van Giersbergen from the Dutch band The Gathering, also does some stuff with Devin Townsend. I am in love with her voice.

Anneke's the best. The Gathering was one of the bands that started the whole female-fronted metal bands thing (if not THE first), at least in Europe. She's a legend.

I completely fell in love with her the first time I heard The Gathering, they're my favorite band of all time, too bad she's not with them anymore, although the new singer, Silje Wergeland, is quite good too.

Another female-fronted band that doesn't get too much attention is Autumn. I love the new singer, Marjan Welman. She sings in an Ayreon album too. Very talented.

I know most of the singers that were posted here, but I'll check the ones I don't. I'm a sucker for a great female voice with heavy sounds, probably my favorite kind of music.

Really? There are quite literally entire sub-genres in rock and metal where almost every band's vocalist is female, particularly in the scandinavian metal scene.

But anyway, here are some bands that I enjoy that have female members:

Most of these have probably been named, but I'm going to roll them out anyway:

Simone Simons (Epica)
Tarja Turunen (Nightwish/solo)
Floor Jansen (After Forever/ReVamp)
Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy/Leaves' Eyes)
Charlotte Wessels (Delain)
Lady Angellyca (Forever Slave)
Sharon del Adel (Within Temptation)
Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering)
Maria Brink (In This Moment)
Sabine Edelsbacher (Edenbridge)
Francesca Chiara (The LoveCrave)
You've already named most of my top picks that would first have come to mind. I'm not too good with music genres, but as this is similar to my chosen taste in music I'm also fond of:

All Ends, Amaranthe, The Birthday Massacre, Dark Princess, Dawn of Destiny, Elis, Eyes Of Eden, Fireflight, Halestorm, HB, Icon For Hire, Indica, Innocens, Krypteria, Lacuna Coil, The Letter Black, Liv Moon, Lunatica, The Material, The Murder Of My Sweet, Nemesea, Pythia, Satyrian, Sirenia, Visions of Atlantis, We Are The Fallen, Xandria, Yotangor
Whelp there goes any contribution I could have made to this thread.

Try going on Grooveshark or possibly youtube (although I definitely recommend grooveshark more) find a band that has what you're looking for and check out the related artists links. I've found some great bands that way, even though there are some I've never been able to find again. And some of the selections can be a little lacking, (they have one album from Lacuna coil, one of my favourite bands, out of six)

Aside from the ones that haven't already been mentioned...

All of Matriarch
Kelly Schilling (Stoic Dissention)
Dr. Mikannibal (Sigh)
Belinda Butcher & Debbie Googe (My Bloody Valentine)
Rachel Goswell (Slowdive)
Zorgh (Darkspace)

Can't really think of much else off the top of my head. It's late and I'm tired, what do you want from me?

I've got no idea if it's been mentioned before and I'm too lazy to check but
How the hell have you not heard of Halestorm?!

Also, there's Epica. Their lead singer is Simone Simmons.
