Final Fantasy.

Whatever else you say about the Final Fantasy series (even as a fan FFX put me off almost entirely) they have always had good music. Nobuo Uematsu is an incredibly gifted composer.

Early exampels would include Tomb Raider and MGS for me. The soundtrack of MGS is pitched very very well, and I say that as someone who has tried to compose music for his own videogame efforts. Almost every tune is perfectly suited to the moment when it is played in order to draw you in without you even realising. And that alert music still makes me dive for cover every time I hear it. As for Tomb Raider, the melody is so simple yet so distinctive that whenever anyone asks me about videogame music I can hum it on cue for them.

Every song from the Serious Sam boss battles. And the Final Level soundtracks.

This one being my absolute favourite. The atmosphere , the raining fireballs and thousands of Monsters coming at you ... Best Level in any FPS Ever.

How has nobody mentioned Portal 2? (unless I missed it)

That was a great OST, especially the parts where it was a whole orchestra instead of a computer.

But yes, I must admit, a lot of themes are good, such as Skyrim or the Halo main theme. Those are nice to listen to, the former being REALLY good at getting me to do chores.

kinda off topic, but Jurassic Park's main theme goes with any situation. Think about it.

HOW the peachy hell did this go two pages before Journey was mentioned??

The game has a soundtrack that sounds like fulfillment in the soul! Like enlightenment, and rebirth, and happiness and everything.

A game that makes you contemplate the eternal just through it's soundtrack. Top that.
Probably because there aren't that many Playstation users on Escapist? I've seen the game and it looks fun, but I don't have a PS3, so I'm SOL.
I see your "contemplate the eternal" and raise you "is the reason I like metal" with F-Zero X's soundtrack :p
Find a friend who does, and hijack/lojack his console, and play the game. I raise your metal, and give you the soundtrack to spiritual ascension, revival, and the absolute sublime. Headbang to that, I say.

VVVVVV, Sonic and Braid. I'd say Fallout 3 but not if copy-pasted popular music isn't allowed.

Anything by Nobuo Uematsu. Ever.

OK, Silent Hill 1's ST is pretty damn sweet as well.

I have to give two games credit for actually having me go out of my way to get their soundtrack. The first, is Bastion, which has already been mentioned. The second is Neotokyo. Never heard of it? Hear's a taste.

The entire soundtrack is nothing but pure concentrated epic. I suggest to anyone to listen to it as it is the best ambient electronic music I have ever heard (And that slight hint of eastern influence adds a lot to it).
I forgot about that one! I loved that soundtrack too. It reminds me of Ghost in the Shell while still bringing its own style. Damn good one.

My personal entry would be Final Fantasy Tactics. I think a game sound track shouldn't just be atmospheric but should be obvious in trying to set a mood. I thought FFT soundtrack did a fantastic job at that. This is the first soundtrack in a videogame I remember where I just stopped playing so i could listen to the music over and over again...I did it quiet a bit. To me FFT has yet to be topped in terms of perfectly setting the mood of the rest of the game.

Besides what other game has a track called "Bloody Excrement"

There are plenty more I could post, but I think I'll stop before I am unable to =P
The ME3 one is so much like the game. Amazing for almost all of it and then right at the end it goes to hell.

One of my favourite soundtracks is inFamous 2. Particularly this one

well, (love em or hate em) anything Zelda or Final Fantasy related always has good music

but I'm amazed no-one has mentioned Silent Hill yet

also Shadow of the colossus is pretty great...but loses points for sounding a bit like Justin Beiber slowed down 800 times

Armored Core V Garage theme music -- 12 Steps. Its pretty calming and a lot of people have said it sounded similar to House M.D.'s theme somehow.

Its alternative, more Rock influenced version/remix - Lament over the howling age

I really recommend these two. As for something NOT armored core related :

-WARNING- 10 Minute Loop ahead.

Okay that's long enough post I think.
