Amazon UK Declares 3DS the Most-Preordered Console Ever

More people want to get their hands on a 3DS from Amazon than any other console in the online retailer's history.

Hey, have you heard about this most-preordered console [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101369-E3-2010-Nintendo-Formally-Reveals-Its-3DS-Kid-Icarus] in the hardware giant's long history.

According to Amazon UK, pre-launch hype for the 3DS is bigger than even Nintendo itself had claimed - the 3D-capable handheld has more preorders than any console it's ever sold. The 3DS has 20% more preorders than Sony's PS3 did back in 2007, and 56% more preorders than Nintendo's plucky little Wii. It's also smashed the numbers held by its closest relatives in the Nintendo handheld family, putting up 255% more preorders than Amazon saw for the DSi.

It hasn't even hit shelves yet, and the handheld is already on Amazon UK's top ten bestsellers list.

"It's unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year's Microsoft Kinect," Amazon UK's director of videogames Chris Poad told VG247 [http://www.vg247.com/2011/03/17/3ds-becomes-amazon-uks-most-pre-ordered-console-ever/].

"Nintendo 3DS is launching at a time when interest in all things 3D is incredibly high and with the promise of real 3D graphics without glasses, it's a real breakthrough in handheld video game entertainment."

A good launch is crucial to Nintendo this time around - not only does the 3DS have the NGP [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107321-Sony-Finally-Confirms-New-PSP] breathing down its neck, but it also faces stiff competition in the form of mobile gaming on Android and iOS devices.

Percentages are all well and good, but could we have a hard number? Also...

Never get tired of this gif :D

This makes me question the veracity of this claim... Man has clearly been hitting the drugs hard.

But yeah, this is pretty ridiculous. the 3DS looks interesting... but not THAT interesting. Then again I might be the wrong person to judge this. "Portable consoles" kinda lost all their appeal to me about 13 years ago.

I declare my ass the most comfortable thing to sit upon.

That still does not make it true. I'll wait for the official sales charts.

The Wii was damn ground breaking, same as Facebook and mobile games. I mean, its not a very good console, but its done more for positive PR towards games than 30 child plays (even if PA and co have done more good)

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I'm suprised, I didn't expect it to beat the Wii or PS3. I've actually already preordered my 3DS, so I guess I'm helping out their numbers a little.

I agree though some hard numbers might be nice.

Likewise, this hardly tells us anything. I want to see concrete figures. And yeah, that gif never gets old. :p

Says who? Over 80 million people were willing to hand over their hard-earned cash for one. If that doesn't qualify it for a "good" console, I don't know what does.

See, now I'm glad I preordered as soon as possible from US Amazon. People can say "Oh you'll just be able to go into a store without a preorder and get one whenever you want" all they want, but I believe it less and less as time goes on.

On the subject of this, will the Nintendo DSi be worth getting once it drops in price? Will the later 3DS titles be compatible with the previous DS models? I don't really care for the 3D thing at all, but I've having a handheld craving lately, something I've put off for probably around a decade or so since my Game Boy Advance died.

If only the launch line up didn't suck balls.

However, I have been convinced to buy it because they are releasing a special edition of Shin Megami tensei DS- which means they also might be releasing that supposed sequel to Fire Emblem and The World Ends With You...
I'm sold Nintendo.

Well, after a month or so for the price to drop.

Nnnope. The 3DS has drastically more powerful hardware than any other DS(i) model to date, and its games won't run on the old system. You can play DS(i) games on the 3DS, though.

On-topic: I saw this coming. Everyone who thought this would be another Virtual Boy must already be hiding in shame. *pre-ordered mine ages ago for this very reason*

That's sad. I really like the design of the DSi, the 3DS really puts me off with its glossy appearance, I much more prefer a matte, rough plastic surface that doesn't feed off the grease of your fingers.
I suppose I'll just wait a few years for the 5th 3DS revision and hopefully get this much cheaper, because the price of this does not sit well with my wallet.

Hate to be the bringer of even more bad news, but unless it was just PR, Nintendo has already said that they won't be doing the usual revisioning with the 3DS. As it was explained in an Iwata Asks interview, they already used all their space-saving tricks and design revamping to get it as small and sleek as it is now. They're out of tricks, unless the chips get smaller revisions.

except that it isn't a console. it's a handheld. clearly not in the same category as the PS3 or Xbox 360 or even the Wii, regardless of what amazon tells themselves at night.
