It's about time.

Anyway, NVIDIA FTW!
The AMD Radeon 6800 series will still kick the ass of anything Nvidia will produce until a good three months afterwards.

Just a name rebranding, Im sure alot of people will still just refer to the cards as ATI anyways.

On a seperate note i'm loving the flame war going on here over graphics cards

Sad day indeed, still I love both companies and always tried to support them, so from a consumerist whore's point of view I'll love AMD graphics as much as I did ATi's.

Wow you must stay so fit with all that jumping to conclusions.
:D

Seriously, no I don't think so, part of the GPU arms race for the last decade has always been about who can support and update their entire range of Graphics Cards, it not just about how many transistors on a board but also how efficient the old Cards get.
I thought the same thing when I read the title.(just bought a 5870)

After reading the article, it's clear...this is just about marketing.

I`ve always been a nVidia fanboy, but after 2 years of fucking awesome 8800GT performance i thought i`d sell it and get half of the money i need to get a 5770..and double the performance lol

so, they will still provide support for the Ati video cards, right?

nvidia is overpriced and is so badly constructed it lasts only 2 years.
I've never had a Nvidia card go out on me, which manufacturer did you buy from?
I agree with Ultra, I had two GTX 285's die within six months. The 200 series was a failure and the 400 series is not getting good feedback either.

I used to have an ATI card and whilst I was satisfied by it I switched to Nvidia. I'm currently satisfied with NVidia as well so honestly I can't really take a side in this "graphics card" war. Though break for ATI users though.

From the sounds of things, this is worse nose for NVIDIA than it is for ATI. AMD's going to move to put VPUs as a part of the CPU. Provided the embedded VPUs are up to snuff, why bother to buy a dedicated video card at all? The whole idea of a separate video card industry is now nearing obsolescence. PC gaming may end up standardized in much the same way Consoles are, where it's simply a matter of what speed of CPU/VPU combo unit you have installed that determines what you can run.

Wait, if I remembered correctly they didn't support laptop cards anyway. (Was no info on their website for my mates vaio :< )

OT:

Radeon was owned by AMD? I always thought it was owned by ATI, oh well thats a bit of news.
Yeah but they don't support my card either. But I hate Intel because of the crappy performance their CPUs have.

Everyone and their grandmother knows that Nvidia is and always has been better anyways. So it's not exactly any big news.
Rubbish. I haven't had a single nVidia product that installed easily and/or worked properly EVER. I'm seriously bummed by this, because I ONLY use ATI products.
For me its the other way around. ATI cards have been a fucking cancer for me. Nvidia has always worked 100% for me so all I can do is cheer.

Oh thank god.

Reading that article I was scared that the company was going to stop making graphics products. Then I realized that they were just changing the name, which is fine because I use AMD products anyway.

Bullet dodged.
Isn't it funny how many people in this thread failed to grasp that the actual cards aren't going anywhere?

Aaawww.
It's a sad day. I like my 4850.
Hear hear. My 4850 holds her own just fine. When it came out it rivaled a weaker more expensive nVidia cards (I forget, but they had an MSRP of about $200 and some places were selling them for as much as $600 due to demand). I'm not a loyalist, but when I needed more punch, this was the card. Curious to see what comes next.

Edit: fyi I know it's just a brand being dropped, but for ages it was ATI vs nVidia, so seeing it go just feels like the end of an era.

Nvidia makes fantastic cards, But I don't see why ATI has to go away, I had an X1950 for a while and it was great.

I enjoy having the choice.

Also, the Tech Report link goes to a jpg hosted on techreport.com instead of their rather more informative article [http://techreport.com/discussions.x/19547].
Thanks for letting me know, it's been fixed.

For the record, I also find it entirely hilarious that so many of you are put off by the "misleading" title. That won't be changed, btw.
I like how you emphasized 'misleading', like the idea of your title being such is completely ludicrous. The idiom "pull the plug on [whatever]" doesn't mean what you seem to think it means.

I typed in "pulls the plug" into Google and these were the first three results:

Who pulls the plug? - thestar.com [http://www.thestar.com/living/health/article/411083--who-pulls-the-plug]

This article discusses taking people off of life-support, after which they die.

Microsoft pulls the plug on Kin [http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-20009336-56.html]

This article is about Microsoft discontinuing its Kin phone (as in the phone is no longer produced, under any name).

Google Pulls the Plug on Google Wave [http://gigaom.com/2010/08/04/google-pulls-the-plug-on-google-wave/]

This one's about Google axing its email/chat hybrid, so you can't use Google Wave anymore, because it doesn't exist.

For future reference, here's a definition from TheFreeDictionary [http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/pull+the+plug]:

pull the plug (on someone)
1. Lit. to turn off someone's life-support system in a hospital. (Based on pull the plug (on something) {2}. This results in the death of the person whose life support has been terminated.) They had to get a court order to pull the plug on their father. Fred signed a living will making it possible to pull the plug on him without a court order.
2. Fig. to put an end to someone's activities or plans. (Based on pull the plug (on something) {2}.) The mayor was doing a fine job until the treasurer pulled the plug on him. David pulled the plug on Fred, who was taking too long with the project.

pull the plug (on something)

1. Lit. to terminate the functions of something by pulling a connector from a socket. While she was working at the computer, I accidentally pulled the plug. I pulled the plug on the vacuum because the switch was broken.
2. Fig. to reduce the power or effectiveness of something; to disable something. Jane pulled the plug on the whole project. The treasurer pulled the plug because there was no more money in the budget.

By all means, keep the title; let it stand as an eternal testament to your gross misconception of the idioms you employ.
