I assumed Shadow was supposed to be Native American, as a kind of link to the story of how Mr Wednesday turned up in America.

I heard about this after seeing Neil Gaiman's response, I told a friend about it and her response was just "How?". Got to say, that's kind of my response too

I did too, but I can't remember exactly what made me think that.

Whiskey Jack asks him several times if he was one. It's all part of the ambiguities that surrounding Shadow.

Well, in the book it's mentioned that Shadow's mother was black, iirc. And his father was
the whitest of the white nordic gods
so i guess some ambiguity when it comes to background was ensured.

Personaly, i imagined him being played by Michael Ealy

I have no idea who the guy from article is.

I only got around to reading American gods last Xmas. Not a bad book, very imaginative in my opinion.
The protagonist shadow was described as having dark skin I recall but I also remember a character asking about his heritage, so I assumed he was mixed.
Also he was described as being big, like badass don't mess with me big. This Ricky guy is in obviously good shape but he doesn't seem to be really big, it probably won't matter much though.
