So looking at the announcement of some Splatter Zone Amiibos, I have to wonder; how successful have these things been? Even though I barely have any games that use them, I still have a Zelda Amiibo that I use with Smash 4 - which, BTW, Level 50 Amiibo Zelda, despite being one of the worst characters in the game, still WRECKS people - and I'd want more. (Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Lucina, Dr. Mario please?)

Is this gonna be a big thing with Nintendo now?

I doubt it. Amiibos have really run their course, and Nintendo hasn't been...endearing itself to the community of late. The whole "this amiibo is super rare because we say so!" worked for like a month or two.

Now?

Well when was the last time you got a Beanie Baby? That should tell you the way Amiibos are going.

I like how Nintendo is trying to establish some sort of identity with amiibo, but the amount of games they're used for is kind of low; and in some cases, frankly mis-alligned in terms of player genres. like before Mario Kart; what game would Pac-Man be used for other than getting 1UPs in Captain Toad or Smash? his "main" usage for Namco is Ace Combat....

In Sonic's case it might be a bit worse since he rarely has games that often, i wouldn't be surprised if they bring him up for the next Mario and Sonic game and that would be it. Smash is essentially the vehicle for gaining sales for amiibo, but other than that, they just kind of sit there. though as far as Nintendo merch goes, they're kind of quirky, and is the only way that some franchises would even get merchandise in the west like Earthbound. they're no Figma or Nendoroid, but for £10-14, they're pretty OK. just that the realistic human characters tends to have that painted-on-face syndrone whilst other characters are much more closer to their game's representation.

There's even some flaws, but that's due to the molding process and in no way causes fragileness. so Diddy, Mario, Pikachu and Bowser is spot-on, but DK's hyper realistic fur translates even worse in real life, and the mold "flaws" i was talking about is really noticable around DK, Diddy and Bowser's mouthes, the most latter even looks like a Kubrick stare. Yoshi too has little mold joints, but he's pretty cartoony....just wait for PAC-MAN, those suction cup-like joints will look 100% for him.

I think sales have been good for Nintendo, last time I checked they had sold over 3,5 million amiibos (which would be twice as much if they had actually bothered to keep the stocks up, I'm sure). Apparently they've sold even better than Super Smash Bros., too: 7 amiibos for every 3 copies of the game sold. Which kinda spells out the common complaint of "there aren't enough games to use these things with".

That would come much appreciated if Nintendo worried about that before selling the damn things in the first place.

Amiibos seem to be doing fine financially for Nintendo. Whether they wanted to make their fans happy with a new feature, or just cash in on the NFC toy supplemented game design craze that Skylanders and Disney Infinity are enjoying is up to debate. And now Lego is jumping in on the bandwagon, too.

The problem with the success so far is the collectors, who either keep them sealed or only use the NFC features on rare occasions, are a large part of that revenue. Since a large part of the install base appears satisfied (as long as things are not sold out), the voices asking for more games that support existing Amiibo and also asking for more built in memory, so a single Amiibo can work on more than one game, are being drowned out by the chanting of "Keep them in stock, we want more." The cards should solve that second issue, but they are taking their sweet time bringing flat sheets of plastic to market.

I can't say for sure if this NFC game phenomenon is a fad and will sputter out. (Well, the Amiibo obsession is a fad and will die someday.) I've heard some parents like it (especially the variety of play styles in Skylanders) and prefer spending $10-15 for a new character over spending $60 on a new game ever few months. Maybe Big N should try their own Skylanders-esque mega game that works with almost every Amiibo currently on the market.

I have one... Fox McCloud, Full level and has a pretty solid statboost. Been thinking about getting a second one but not sure whom I should get. Maybe I'll impulse buy one the next time I see some of 'em :p

Nintendo certainly has noting to complain about. I find there's something of an Amiibo craze.

I don't think people are that bothered that not many games support amiibos. For the most part people just seem to want them on their shelf.

Yeah, I leveled a Kirby Amiibo to 50 but then got Peach (who's my main) and I can't be arsed to use it.

They're going to try their hardest to I bet and die-hard Nintendo collectors are making it easy. Take for example an friend of mine who spent over three hundred trying to collect all of them. I've recently gone out of contact with him, so I have no clue if he's gotten his moneys worth yet.

Honestly, I just view it as Nintendo trying to crack into the market that Skylanders started. The only thing is that Amiibos work for multiple games instead of one.

To be fair though, the Skylanders crap started out with one game too.

Oops. I meant to say that the only advantage Ammibos have is that they work for multiple games. While Skylanders and Disney Infinity only work for one game, just under different titles.

Regardless of Nintendo's issues in keeping up with demand, I'm pretty sure Amiibos have been a pretty decent success in general.

As much as I love Nintendo I kinda wish Amiibos would have crashed and burned. But that's me being a party pooper, I guess.

I don't know exactly what Amiibos are (besides figurines) and Nintendo hasn't done a very good job of convincing me to care. It's just Skylanders for several different games, and Skylanders is pure evil anyway.

Why should I care? Why should I shell out extra money for these figurines?

Seeing how Lego has joined the fray (the recent Dimensions news), I doubt Nintendo will get rid of them anytime soon.

The sales have ensured Amiibos will still be a thing for a while. Whether or not Nintendo will implement them more into games, that is uncertain. If they make them essential for playing a game, people will complain, if they continue to have little effect on the games, people will still complain. I'm just wondering if they plan to make a game that uses Amiibos like Disney Infinity or Skylanders.

As for me, I just have Link right now, and I'll get Robin when he comes out. I may get Kirby and maybe Mario and Toon Link if I feel like it. I love Nintendo characters, but I am going to limit my Amiibo buying. I'm also saving my money for when they eventually make every Pokemon an Amiibo(you know they will do it sooner or later) so I can snatch up a few dozen of my favorites. :p

I get the feeling that Nintendo will activate thier traditional feedback airlock and keep forcing Amiibos on us until we dont think twice about it anymore.

They pulled it off with motion controls and touch screens, im sure theyre going to press on with Amiibos too.

I work in our electronics department at my local one stop shop store. Speaking from a retail perspective (and keeping in mind that I dont work every day and every hour of each day the stores open) I dont see us selling a lot of amiibo's anymore. At first we had a few scalpers coming by to buy out all the rare ones with the intent to resell them (why people buy stuff on ebay when they can just come to the store I have no idea). Besides the scalpers I havnt sold to many of them so far. I bought a mega man and shiek, and my coworkers friend bought a mega man but sales overall have been rather low

There could be a few different reasons for that though

I'm just super super ultra salty that we weren't able to get a Ness Amiibo and now have to buy one on ebay for like...a stupid amount of money if we want to have one. My partner and I don't even really want it to use for the game. We wanted him because there's not really any Earthbound toys aside from super duper expensive imports from Japan and it would have been cool to have one since my partner has a pretty intensive Earthbound/Mother collection.

The two Amiibos I have (Link and Pikachu) just sit on a shelf and look cool... we've only used them to entertain our nieces and nephews.

I think it's a cool idea, but most definitely moreso for kids and not grown ass adult gamers.

Just wait till they bring out a Pokemon or Animal Crossing title that uses Amiibo, then you'll see them really bring in the money. If they made Pokemon TCG with Amiibo functionality they'll be swimming in cash. Maybe even enough to actually fund some sequels to those treasured franchises we've been begging for for years. Or Wii Music 2.
