Ammo rationing at Wal-Mart as panic buying sweeps US

The USA is suffering the most severe ammunition famine in living memory. Gun fanciers, fearing a Democrat crackdown on every American's right to pack heat, are clearing shelves at ammo shops and hoarding cartridges.

AP reports that the Remington Arms Company's factory in North Carolina is now working around the clock trying to supply insatiable demand for rifle, pistol and shotgun cartridges.

"We've had to add a fourth shift and go 24-7," Remington spokesman Al Russo told the news wire. "It's a phenomenon that I have not seen before in my 30 years in the business."

The shortages are so bad that retail globocorp Wal-Mart has been forced to introduce rationing at the ammo counter in many of its stores. Depending on calibre, customers may be limited to purchases of just 50 rounds at a time. Apparently, classic .45 ACP pistol ammunition is especially scarce - a fairly good indication that it is in fact conservative Middle America rather than, say, inner-city criminals buying up all the ammo*.

According to the National Rifle Association, America's pro-guns lobby, the people of the USA normally buy about 7 billion cartridges a year (an average of 23 rounds per head). The past year has seen that figure jump to 9 billion. The FBI reports a 25 per cent climb in background checks made prior to gun sales.

The ammo rush has been dubbed the "Obama effect" by gun-industry people, but in fact there is no sign at present of any particularly aggressive move towards stricter federal gun laws.

Police forces across the States reportedly suffered from some ammo shortages earlier in the year, but this was in large part unrelated to the surge in civilian demand. Rather, heavy use by the US military overseas made it hard to obtain ammunition such as 5.56mm assault-rifle/intermediate-power cartridges, commonly used by plods and troops but much less so by civilian gun owners.

Meanwhile the ongoing shortages have seen ammo prices soar.

"Used to be gold, but now lead is the most expensive metal," one gun enthusiast told AP [http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090923/ap_on_re_us/us_ammo_shortage]. "And worth every penny."

I never thought I'd see the day when the USA runs out of bullets but wow..this is some really scary stuff. Not merely because the the US is facing a bullet shortage but the fact that it's causing a panic. I for one understand the second amendment and the reasons behind it but surely, unless everyone in America is going hunting I don't see the reason for panic, let alone why the gun-industry people have to title such a thing as "Obama Rush".

Unless the dead start rising I think that this is a bit overrated and hardly calls for a civilian panic. Or am I missing something?.

That's a bizarre reaction especially as it seems to have no logical basis. But then it IS American gun-nuts we're talking about I suppose so I guess it's not that surprising. But it's not as if Obama has actually said anything at all about this issue. For all I know it's Obama who's stockpiling the .45 rounds.

Heh, I think they are about 3 months to late in their observation. Ammo supply is back on the upswing. Wally world actually had 9mm ammo in stock. Only thing that is hard to find is the little .380. But unlike 3 months ago you can walk into most any gun store and walk out with whatever ammo you needed.

I to wondered this. Seems to just be speculation rather than anything base of fact.

That part got cut off, but following the link gets you
Bootnote

*Most kinds of .45 have unexceptional muzzle energy and are big and fat, giving fairly poor performance even against light, flexible body armour. It was the standard US military pistol round for a long time and many diehards still swear by it, but people who carry guns for a living - cops, soldiers, criminals - are mostly using other calibres these days. (Some spec-ops troops still use .45, as the bullet is subsonic and thus can be effectively silenced.)
Which still doesn't strike me as much of a rationale for that assumption. All it is a little more detail on the .45 round.

There is no need to panic unless the world is literally running out of the raw materials needed to manufacture bullets, then the panic is completely unnecessary. The democrats don't want to take guns away, the crazy liberal zealots do. I may be liberal myself, but I really don't see the need to take weapons away from upstanding citizens, I also don't see why the gun nuts would be in such a panic over their own paranoia.

Now it has never been clearer that the whole 'Obama will take my gun' thing was actually an insidiously clever ploy by arms and ammo manufacturers to put an impressionable populace in a panic-induced shopping spree. It almost makes me want to applaud them.

This is nothing. You should have sen the panic that ensued during the Tickle Me Elmo shortage of 1996. Try to imagine about 500 thousand overweight soccer moms waddling their fat asses across the malls of America. Remember the dinosaur stampede from King Kong? It was kind of like that but with more obesity.

Not sure I understand that point myself, then again that whole article is beyond me. I must say though, lulz were had at the crazy gun nut's expense.

I actually happen to be a gun nut and find half the comments here to mostly be the kind of shortsighted idiocy that you people are accusing people of the opposite view point of having.

There have already been numerous attempts to introduce gun control through ammo legislation. They know they can get the ammo manufacurers to compliy so they have talked over a large number of plans that will do nothig but raise the cost of a cartridge. Things like serial numbers on the bullet and case, limiting production, taxes, and probably the worst being a cap on ownership of more the 1000 cartridges of any caliber combined. Oh and they also want reloaders to get a manufactures license so they can regulate the equipment they use.

Basicaly gun control through the ammo. This started the hoarders off before Oboma actually took office. Everyone else just sees ammo vanishing from store shelves starts beliving roumers and thus starts trying to stockpile ammo. Thankfully I already had a cosiderable stockpile of ammo in all catridges I need to fire every gun I own. I just have trouble when I want to get some ammo just to target shoot and plink with.
