A simple question really, to all those who played, and Finished amnesia, was it the scariest game you ever played? Not the best game, not the most entertaining, but scariest, made you pause the game, leave the room, affect your breathing and pulse, make your pinky sore from holding down the crouch button.
opinions appreciated.

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CCF994F89ECEAF9C I'll say it's damned scary, but, judge for yourself how I react, I'm mostly through it, I'm pretty sure, this is my 1st time playing it, so, blind recording.

1st person horror set in a Lovecraft-ish Mansion, stalked by a horror patrolling the halls, you must explore and hide, solve puzzles and run like hell. See, you don't fight back in Amnesia. You don't get weapons. You run and hide and you think, or you die. A lot.

I'm still working my way past where the demo ended (I know what to do, but the water....) But the first dog howl in penumbra made me quit and run to turn the lights on. Just play it the right way, lights off and it's really scary

I actually though Penumbra Overture to be scarier. Amnesia was a far better game though (and horrifying in its own right).

Eh I don't know. Scary yes, but I've become very resistant to fear through games over the years. Had I played it around the time of the first RE installments I probably would have shit myself multiple times. As it is, the only times that really got my heart racing was:

1) Going through the sewers and you avoid 1 corpse guy, then as soon as you get to the last door he comes running at you. I wasn't sure what was happening so I turned around instead of bolting through the door, and he was right in my face. I definitely jumped.
2) The flooded storerooms, with the footsteps in the water. I didn't know what was happening at first and died. Second time I realised it, jumped on a box and was like OMGWTFBBQ! Every jump I made I was on edge, and the few sprints through the water definitely were very tense. And then when he chases you later... breaks doors... yikes
3) Very close to the end, when you get attacked and thrown into the cell. I was like WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUCCCKKKK!!!!??!?!?! As a gang of them came running at me.

But after that, I found the torture cells creepy but that's about it. Most of the game was just creepy as well. I already knew from Penumbra that Frictional Games doesn't put a lot of enemies in the game so I never really felt too threatened

Back in the first RE days, like RE2 on N64, I couldn't play more than 20 minutes at a time in the dark basement, then I'd pause and turn on all the lights and maybe go upstairs and talk with my parents for a bit... then go back at it lol.

Also, I didn't really understand the ending of Amnesia. A little too "happy ending" IMO.

Damn, that was so hilarious. That guy is just getting scared out of his mind, it's fantastic.

OT: Haven't actually played the game, I'm a bit too much of a sissy to do that, but from the things I've heard and read about it, it's pretty damn scary.

So has anyone tried fighting? Maybe beating a monster to death with a chair or something?

Nope.

Fatal Frame takes that prize, by a long shot.
I could only play Fatal frame 2 for 10-15 minutes before I turned it off. Even though I wanted to play it, it was just genuinely terrifying.

I agree with this guy, right here!

This weekend marked my third attempt to get through it. This game scares me witless still, I just can't get through it.

Amnesia is that kind of horror which works best on me I guess... games like Dead Space don't scare me except with cheap effects, but Amnesia, like Penumbra before, really affect me like the developers intend to.

I think I'll try to complete it again in the spring, these dark nights just are too much for this game (or I'm just a major wimp).

Credit where it's due, a few others reach a similar level. System Shock 2, Penumbra: Black Plague, the Shalebridge Cradle level in Thief: Deadly Shadows and Nightmare House 2.

Conclusion: Sequels are terrifying.

After reading this, I am going to download the demo. While I consider myself to be somewhat resistant to horror games, judging my everyone's reactions I think I may have found a truly scary game.

ironically no one does, because your thought process really isnt very logical when you see one of those ....things..but from what i hear stuff just bounces the fuck off them and they stab you with claws.

You ever wanted to see a most-of-the-time mature thirteen year old scream at the top of his lungs then shake as he tries to recollect his mental wellbeing at sanity? Then watch me play Amnesia, to me Amnesia the dark decent is a game I can only play every so often because I freak out, my hands shake, and I just want to...want to be shot in the head on CoD by some twelve year old punk.

I guess if you have a strong imagination like I do you feel you are Daniel the protagonist.
