The fact that there's no combat means that there's always an escape. The fact that there's always an escape means that nothing is a threat. The fact that nothing is a threat means that nothing is scary.

Rule of Rose is scary.
Always an escape? You mustn't of got very far my friend...
Getting trapped in a room with one of those things is instant death.
A brute can one hit you.
If they see your run into a room, you're dead.
And I could go on, but you could go on their Wikipedia or actually play the game.

See the pattern?

On a side note, Rule of Rose was laughable, another crappy Japanese horror that is only scary because you and all your friends think Japanese have the "Scariest" look on the genre, when in reality are extremely funny and impossible to take seriously.

Seriously you get a companion and the ability to fight back, which makes me feel safe, second to having my mummy tuck me in with a warm blanky.

And it was so BORING a didn't even bother to play it for longer than twenty minutes.

Sorry to piss on your parade, old chap.

If there's anything worse than stupid people, it's smug stupid people.
I'm smug if I decided to not play a terrible game!?

If you can't captivate your audience and YOU actually force them off a game early on, you're doing it wrong.

I guess Rule of Rose didn't have enough explosions and giant insects jumping out at you screaming "boogidy boogidy boogidy" for your taste. You might want to keep in mind that subtlety is something that some people enjoy. I bet you thought Dead Space was scary, too. Not saying that Dead Space is a bad game, mind, it just isn't scary. At all.
There is a difference for being an action freak and being generally bored of a game.

I love Amnesia, it did it well, Rule of Rose did not, in my opinion, for some reason Japanese video games and movies have never done it for me, I find them funny rather than scary.

P.S: I agree, Dead Space wasn't scary, for some reason being able to blow the "Abloogy Woogy Woos" to smithereens and paint the wall with a new color I like to call "Hint of Brain" (Blackadder Reference", seems to take the fear-factor away.

I would rather say Frictional is the best horror game Dev, rather then Amnesia, their latest prodigy being the scariest game in existence.
The original Project zero *fatal frame* takes the title from Amnesia itself, but the more recent fatal frames have not been as good compared to Frictional's 3 hits out of four.

I watched a playthrough before I played the game and even then it was scary as hell I only played when it was bright in the room and i had someone to talk to.

The scariest game I ever played was Thief 3, the Shalebridge Cradle mission.
I didn't find Amnesia scary but the atmosphere was great and the setting was great.

I just can't get myself to like this game even though I played it all the way through. The story was lame.

Yeah I think so. It scared the crap out of me a number of times. It did a very good job of drawing you in and the chase music just put me on edge. Tho allot of the time when the monsters appeared they never came into the same room and once you realise how stupid they are it takes some of the scare out. Sometimes I got a little bored just sitting there staring at the wall, waiting for them to leave so I could get back to puzzles and exploration and I found Justine much more terrifying than the main game.

I didn't found it that scary, the atmosphere did really get you in the game, and there was tension all right, but it's the same tension I found in Thief and to some lesser earlier Splinter Cell games. Of course, I did jumped when cockroaches started appearing from time to time in my screen, whenever the main character's sanity started to deteriorate. But I jumped because I'm fucking hate cockroaches, and I don't want them to jump into my face while I'm alone in a dark room with my earphones plugged.

Perhaps since I grew up playing Silent Hill in the dark with earphones, I find Amnesia not that scary. But it's a really immersive game, one of the most immersive experiences I had so far in this decade.

I remember Eternal Darkness being pretty intense but that's because of all the crazy shit they did to mess with your head.

The monsters kinda stop being scary and start being pitiful roughly around when you realize you can just make a small pile of Debris (which a ruined castle has no shortage of) and simply cage them in.

It's like watching a jawless Puppy try to pick up a stick.

A simple question really, to all those who played, and Finished amnesia, was it the scariest game you ever played? Not the best game, not the most entertaining, but scariest, made you pause the game, leave the room, affect your breathing and pulse, make your pinky sore from holding down the crouch button.
opinions appreciated.
I haven't finished it yet (which is a testament to its scariness) but yeah, it in a whole different league of scary from any other game I've played.
