I really did hate that section, my initial play of the prison went something like this.

It's looking all dark, as every other bit of the castle does anyway...So I take my first tentative steps onwards, turning right and walking up the stairs. Boom, monster roars and I think "Oh it can't be that close, I'll go a little further."

...Naive.

I reach the top of the stairs and just on the right, there it fucking is, monster staring RIGHT at me. I shit a brick, turn the fuck around and sprint back downstairs, instantly breaking right and run towards the locked door to hear screaming, see a body get thrown against it and then see the iron door get beaten on by something.
Immediately turn round thinking "Fuck that twice!" and see the bastard monster staring at me from the other side of the hall, having just walked down the stairs, I book it and dive into the prison cell on the right, close the door and barricade it, then cower in the corner, staring at the wall as my sanity drops through the floor.

Monster starts breaking down the door, it gets through, but does shit all about the barricade, so I can hear it near enough breathing down my neck, that draining my sanity even further. Eventually it buggers off, disappears and allows me to very tentatively continue my journey...

I have never been more scared in a game than at that very moment, when Amnesia wants to make you shit bricks, it really does not let up.

So again, I echo my statements, FUCK the prison.

I want to try this game, is it a jumpy kind of horror game or more psychological one?

I closed the door when a monster was coming, blocked it with boxes, the monster destroyed the door and knocked over the boxes, I rage and die.

I love that game.

A little of both.

Mostly psychological, but it has a jump scare or two.

It has jump scares, but they're usually just to fuck with your head (e.g. dust comes up as a piano that was playing slams shut but there's no monster around). Actually, the entire game plays with the atmosphere. Sometimes tension builds with no real threat. Sometimes there's a sudden burst of tension and danger when you didn't expect it. Sometimes an entire area will be dangerous.

It's pretty much a psychological horror through and through I suppose then.

VERY much psychological, it has the odd jump scare, but a tremendous amount of the horror and fear comes so much from your own imagination. The monsters themselves aren't actually all that scary when you get used to them, it's the genuine fear that the situation places on you.

You're completely alone with no way of defending yourself in a castle where every living being (though few and far between) wants to kill you, your only manner of staying alive is to run, to hide and to make sure you rarely, if ever get spotted by a monster.

It's a feeling of utter seclusion and loneliness that no other game manages to do quite as well through superb tension and atmosphere, if you're a fan of horror, real horror, you will not go wrong here. You may pussy out every half an hour, but you won't regret it.

Played about an hour, i'm practically crying inside. I haven't even seen my first monster and I know it's close :( You know, this has THE best atmosphere of ANY game, seriously. Also, knowing there is a demon thing hunting you down is hellascary, and to be honest, the sanity mechanic makes it all the worse + better.

According to Steam, I played the Demo for 15-20 minutes. I went down into some kind of basement, had a creepy experience, and then got a glimpse of something vaguely humanlike slouch slowly down another corridor...

And then I immediately went "!! OMGOMGOMGWHATTHEHELLSHOULDIDO?!! I CAN'T EVEN DEFEND MYSE-AAARGH!!!! *SLAMS THE ESCAPE KEY AND QUITS!* " ...Also, I was in my room at noon (but the blinds were closed) and I had headphones.

......Yeah, fine. I'm a wuss. But I'm SLOWLY trying to get over that. I was able to beat Dementium on the DS ok, and I got mostly through the sequel, but stopped only because I got bored of it (they practically TELL you what's going on halfway through, killing the mystery and my drive to reach the end).

I'll get back to Amnesia someday. First, I want to toughen myself up (level up my reistance to horror, lol) by playing Dead space and a silent hill game, and Eternal Darkness (yes, I know that's supposed to be the most messed up and scary game ever! ...But at least you can defend yourself!).

...I'm just not ready to tackle Amnesia yet... >_>

This. So much this.
I played this segment at 3am after a mild night of drinking. At one point I needed to take a toilet break, so I walked to the door and looked out at the dark, empty corridor that leads to the toilet in my apartment building. Fucking SPRINTED there and back, before sitting and watching the door, before realising what I was doing.
LMAO! Yeah, Yatzee would call that immersion. When you forget that real life is NOT the game you were playing...The game has done its job!

I got a blast of a full-surround monster voice - indicating that he was fucking close, but not precisely indicating where. Sprinting up the steps, I turned around and slammed the door before hearing it again. Louder. And I could definitely tell the direction this time.
I took one hit as I ran back through, sprinting down the stairs as fast as I could.
Lol...That would have scared the crap out of me.

Also, somehow I'm reminded of an episode of Winnie the Pooh I saw as a kid (of all things) because of all the back and forth. (Hey, shut up! I liked that show as a kid, and when I got older, my brother was the right age for it, so I ended up seeing it all over again since the TV and computer were in the same room at my grandma's house!)
They're planning to go up into the attic during a thunderstorm, and the staircase looks kinda creepy. Basically, everyone (minus pooh) ends up freaking out when the stair creaks, then they all run into a closet to "escape"...only to think something got in there too, then they run OUT, run past Pooh, and into the attic, where they get the crap scared out of them AGAIN when Pooh (having finally climbed up there stairs) knocks on the door, and is framed by a flash of lightning.

.....I actually tried to look up the clip on youtube, but....Well >_> I could only find a super crappy quality one.

Here's the clip if anymore cares. Just be warned, it's freakin low quality... >_>
SKIP STRIAGHT TO 3:00 FOR THE RELEVANT PART!!! (it ends at 4:30)

That game turned me into an instant fanboy.

Hands down the scariest thing I've ever played. Bricks were shat. Frequently. The prison and the torture chambers stand out in my mind.

Oh yeah, you know how people say that Amnesia doesn't rely on "BOO!" scares? Well, that's true. However, there is one in the game. A good one. It made me fall off my chair.

As for tips, if you have some decent headphones then wear them. The game uses sound a lot.
Oh God yes. Play with headphones, and at night with no one in the house if possible. I'm actually just going to start a 2nd playthrough now that you guys have mentioned it...

Also, that jump scare you're referring to was terrifying. I stopped dead for a moment, then turned around and started running, on the verge of screaming.

So, I played for the first time tonight. I closed the door, turned off the lights, and grabbed my headphones. At first, I thought it wasn't going to be as scary as they say. Boy, I was fucking wrong.

I love this game.

Got less scary and more scary as I went through. Odd way to put it I know :p

Let's just say, as monsters got worse and things got more difficult, I became more dickish and derpy in dealing with it.

Needless to say though, awesome game. Did its job very well.

If you've already turned the game off, it's best to try to think about other things, happy things like bunnies or rainbows while sitting in a brightly lit room with other people. If you're still in the middle of playing the game, in a dark, quiet room by yourself, then afraid you're all alone. >:D

Haha I remember going through all of those parts :p

When I got to the part where the new monster takes over, I screwed with them so much and paid with my life a dear number of times. So funny though.

Here is my video of my playthrough, though in the early part of the game. Not as fun as the later parts.
