So I was just killing some time on the Capcom Unity forums when I decided to see if there were any interesting updates on the main page. There was indeed an interesting little entry [http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2011/02/11/playing_marvel_vs_capcom_3_with_guitar_hero_controllers], one in which Seth Killian and Bochan Kim play against each other on Marvel vs. Capcom 3. With Guitar Hero controllers.

This got me to thinking about all the times I'd tried to play games with comically inappropriate controllers, like trying to use that same type of controller to play Halo, which was a futile endeavor but mildy amusing.

Have you ever tried to play a game with entirely the wrong kind of controller just for giggles?

well looking back the N64 controller was a little silly, it looked like it was designed for somone with three hands and Im not sure manay games used the d-pad at all, except pokemon stadium ,the only game I can think of that you play gripping the two smaller handles and not using the joystick

I tried the Xbox controller on Darksiders for PC. My god, it's an awkward pad to hold. Good thing Sony got the pad-thingy right the first time...

I know someone once used a Guitar Hero controller to play DMC3. It worked.
That is... not actually too bad an idea. *attempts*
Unfortunately it only works with Trickster and only on the first 2 levels, due to the lack of any movement controls. Still pretty awesome though.

I tried playing Call of Duty with a Fight Stick.

Fun times. Can't aim or move without switching the stick to Left Stick or Right Stick mode. I failed the fucking tutorial.

Can't sprint or melee...

Aww...I thought this was going to be about horrible controllers through history, in which case I had two candidates:

Look at it. Take a good, long look at all its wonderful, horrible bubble-membrane keyboard glory. (You can't tell from this picture, but it had four buttons, two along each side.) Each game came with plastic overlays to slide over the keyboard so you could tell which button did what. God help you if you lost them.

It's still slightly better than this one, though:

Big. Unwieldy. Fire buttons in completely unergonomic positions. Worst of all? The joystick wasn't self-centering. Atari discontinued the whole system after only two years.

I tried playing MW2 with the controller held backwards. It just got irritating.

Years and years ago I played a system called the Nintendo 64. The controller was among the worst I've ever used for anything, despite the system somehow having some... decent games.

Sigh.

When I was a child a friend only had one controller so when we played multiplayer one of us used one of these

It was hard but rewarding to make a combo in fighting games.

I've experimented with the guitar hero controller, but never with fighting games. I should try that. I ought to get that dance mat, that'll be fun!!

I once played the original Resident evil with a dance mat.

I thought it was actually better than using the controller, because the controls suck in that game.

actually, if you were a child when you used id, its fine, since your hands are smaller.
every playstation controller to date though, suffers the exact same problem as the n64 stick: i aint no tiny chinaman!, give me ergonomic propperly holdable controlls damnit! XD
the xbox630 followed by gamecube controllers ftw.

also, when i read the op i misread the word controllers and thought controlls at first XD
