I hope you are joking because that sounds like a terrible idea. Not all kids can tell the difference between real and game. Also its not censorship to stop an 8 year old from seeing bodies be torn in half, its common sense to not let them see it. Kids have no rights because they are not mature enough to figure things out for themselves, they need a guide.

*cough* Very few people in this discussion seem willing to admit that children can be influenced by the violence in the media they witness. There have been dozens of posts by people saying "I played violent games and I turned out OK" and almost all of them seem to treat the debate like some kind of joke (joking about torturing people while they're talking) but the simple truth is excessive violence DOES desensitize children to real violence. Now I'm not saying this can happen to all children, but it does happen to some and the effects can sometimes be dire. My mother is a primary school teacher and during an argument with her about video game censorship she told me that it's the same little shits who get their parents to buy them GTA4 and the like that go around beating up other kids in the schoolyard. Now maybe they're just violent little fucks raised by parents with no sense of discipline anyway, but denying that playing violent games would have any affect on them is sticking your head in the sand.

I'm not in favour of video game censorship. The "think of the children!" lobby is a blight on the Australian gaming landscape which is already afflicted with far too many blights. If you've heard Yahtzee mention a clown by the name of Michael fucking Atkinson, he's the Attourney General of South Australia and is SINGLE-HANDEDLY responsible for the fact that games have no R-rating in Australia. His attitude is "there will be no R-rating for games because I say so, so there, nyah nyah nyah". He is not open to debate on the issue and when challenged with the fact that Australia is the only developed country WITHOUT an R-rating or equivalent has actually gone on record as describing the rest of the Western industrialised world as "Gaderene swine going over a cliff". Yes, he thinks he and he alone knows better than everyone else in the entire world. When a discussion paper on the topic was arranged, he refused to allow the release of the paper. So no, I'm not in favour of censorship, even though I'm not a big fan of excessively violent games anyway, because the censorship lobby is an out-of-control juggernaught without the slightest understanding of us or the games we play.

Obviously, the real answer is better parenting. Unfortunately, this is impossible. WAY too many parents are horribly unqualified to raise their offspring and should never have been allowed to become parents in the first place. Sometimes I think there should be a proper exam people have to pass before being allowed to become parents (other than the practical I mean). Partly this is because some people are so stupid that they insist on seeing the world their way and refuse to be questioned on anything (like the horrible and oblivious mother mentioned above) and partly because they're just genuinely unconcerned with the minutiae of their child's welfare. Of course they'll freak out if their child gets so much as a scratch and start looking around for someone to sue (unless they're part of the abominable group who don't care about their children at all and abuse them) but they don't care about their child's behavior or mental state as long as they keep out of the way of their career. There is, unfortunately, NOTHING we can do about this. If we instituted laws making it a criminal offence to expose children to mature content then people would probably sit up and take notice, but that's totalitarian and fascistic in the extreme (although I still think it's a good idea) and no-one would stand for it. See, people are so concerned with their so-called "rights", such as "the right to show my child as much gratuitous violence as I see fit", that they don't even listen to the bullshit coming out of their own mouth. They're demanding that they be allowed to raise their child the way they want when they're striving to raise their child to be a violent, antisocial little shit. I'm one of those people who think the criteria for removing children from lousy parents should be loosened a lot, cold though it may seem.

Dude, kids don't get "rights". They get the right to be protected, to grow up safe and healthy, free from exploitation and to get an eductation; or at least they should. They do not get the right to drink, smoke, have sex, buy porn, view violent films or play violent games and that's because it's for their own good, and that's not talking out of my arse, it's a fact. "Absolute freedom for all, irrespective of the consequences" is the cry of the anarchists, specifically the stupid ones.

Wow. I disagree with you, I'm fine with kids playing these games.
Yeah, because you're not a parent. Or at least I hope you're not a parent, because if you are, you're a lousy one.

This is a perfect example of what I always say, Its not the game's fault, it is the stupid parents fault for buying them the game.

I don't really see the problem with kids playing violent video games. I played loads of violent games before I was 8 years old. And I watched movies like Clockwork Orange when I was younger than that and I haven't killed one person.

...yet.

Me and a friend worked part time at a video game store and when parents would come in to buy their child a M rated game, with their child there I should add, we would threaten to call CPS on them.

My parents hated me playing Resident Evil and Carmageddon when I was 10... only because they realised just how violent the games were after they bought it for me. Funnily enough I was the one to turn around and coo reassurances of "It's just a game...", though their particular dislike of Carmageddon was apparent, so I offered to get the green blood patch to relieve their consciensces(though still not quite fully able to understand their dislike of the game). On hearing that I would go out of my way to tone down the violence of the game (thus making it a little less entertaining for me at the time as I was a bloodthirsty little child... for some reason) they relaxed a little bit and let me carry on, realising they were raising an intelligent boy.

No one's found the bodies yet...

:p

My parents are those kinda parents that believe everything that FOX news says word for word. I just turned 16 and my Dad has finally given me the "privilage" to let him review and yes/no an M game if i go through him first. After 2 weeks of him being the 63 year old fart he is its always a prominent NO becuase if its got anything that he says or did (imma stick a boot up ur ass)then he gets pissed ive linked him stuff from freakign harvard scientist but there stupid compared to my all knowing, divine dad,oh ... yes im ranting but it gets me mad when i see an 8 year old get halo or gears of war by throwing a fit when i gotta put in a request to my parents who are brainwashed by retards so .....parents need to listen to the people WHO PLAY THE GAMES... not the peopel who have never touched one in there life.

It should be more based on mental maturity over ESRB, some people can understand it and can handle it and turned out fine, some people don't and well you get the idea.

Anyway, since the xbox update, and i think maybe before, you can set it up to lock kids out of games.

What's wrong with that?

The game is catered to that demographic.

Besides, who here wasn't playing Doom when they were like 6?

haha, I was just about to post about how I wanted Doom more than anything else when I was 8. I don't really see what the fuss is about, I played those sorts of games when I was young and I didn't turn out to be some horrible sociopath. If anything, I'd tell said kid's parents to get him Painkiller instead, so as to have a frame of reference based on a non-scrub game.

Wow, I'm 14 and almost all of the games I play are 18+.
I'm such a bad person, and my chance of becoming a murderer is increased by 1337%.

I think that the violence itself doesn't give any normal child fears or mental problems but what gives fears especially is well.. I don't know but I'll give you an example. Have you played Fallout 3? Theres a part where you have to enter a virtual reality where you live in a place called Tranquilty Lane and in the end of the simulation you have to kill all the residents of the lane wearing a mask and wielding a knife. That kinda creeps me out too especially when theres all this happy music playing and everybody's happy etc.
