Anime is a wholly foreign area for me. I know some people that absolutely love it, and I respect their judgement enough to feel like I'm missing out on something.

I've mainly been brought up on Western stories, and I've tried to make a direct jump to Anime before with varying degrees of success. But, I've never been able to properly 'click' with the phenomenon.

So I need a transmission Anime to spark an interest.

Any ideas?

EDIT:

Two more points of consideration
- I watched the following Animes top to bottom: Death Note and Vampire Knight
- If there is an Anime with any, ANY sort of Blues music in it, I MUST have it!

Cowboy Bebop is looking good ladies and gents!

Blues music really rocks. It's truly a remarkable genre. So badarse.

I'd say Death Note since that was the first anime I watched regularly.

That or Tenchi Muyo.

I loved that show as a kid.

Hmm. There's a vast ocean of Anime series out there. For starts what genre's are you into in general. That'll be a good starting point.

Pokemon, by any chance? Anime if basically one woman's chocolate bar to another man's silver bullet. You don't have to like it because anyone else does. I draw, but don't watch it. (Jeez, Hypocritical me.)

But, there is anime of generally anything now-days. Go google something and test around. It's a bit like tasting wine. Some are great while others are not so much. Generally all based on the user's taste.

Try Spirited Away. It's basically just Alice In Wonderland with anime bells on. Should ease you in fine, and a better-quality anime you'll rarely see.

Yeah I did the Death Note. I also did Vampire Knight and I'm TRYING to do Toradora.

I'm not gunna tell you guys what my favorite genres are because I'm after literally anything that will click anime with em. I can't be picky.

I'll second Spirited Away, but for a series, I'd go for Death Note. It's pretty much a live-action series, but animated. It doesn't have any of the chibi [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuperDeformed?from=Main.Chibi] stuff that people often associate with anime.

How is Vampire Knight by the way? I bought the first volume of the manga and I've yet to read it.

Oh and another good anime to start with is Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell.

I actually really enjoyed Vampire Knight. The conflicted Characters and emotion was done really, really well.

Went in a few directions that to me, seemed so odd. I won't ruin anything for you, but what i can say is that as a westerner, I did NOT expect a few of the curve balls they threw there.

This answer may be typical but I'm going to say Ghost in the Shell. If I was to list all the qualities of anime that make it hard for me to stomach few if any of them would be found in GitS.

Death Note should also work pretty well.

If you are old enough to handle it, try Black Lagoon. Its essentially an Hollywood action movie as directed by John Woo in anime form. It's also one of the few action series that I've seen to dabble in philosophy and morals while still retaining high octane action. It's violent and there is a lot of language in it so it's 16 and up easily.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex is great too, but it may be a bit too philosophy heavy for the casual viewer.

Well any weird shit that happens in anime should be expected, after all:

But seriously, all anime is pretty weird, but I was putting off reading Vampire Knight mainly because I heard (after I bought it) it was like an anime Twilight.
