an arguement I had with my friend

Thanks, I needed a concept for my second paper in this philosophy class I'm taking...

me and my friend where having conversation over x-box live, and he just suddenly brings up the topic that time is a illusion. He came out of no-where with this but I understood where he was coming from, as without something as a reference point in the sky time as a measurement doesn't exist, but he said without the sun time ITSELF would stop. Tell me your views on this argument

Time still goes by, we just base our time on the sun. Time is our way of measurement of well... time.

Correct. As long as there is atomic motion, time advances. The only way to STOP time would be to stop all molecular motion.

if time doesn't end then time doesn't exist (I guess you could say that). because at a universal scale if everything that exists, and I mean EVERYTHING; stopped, then that means time stops which means no energy exists anymore to keep things flowing. so as long as the universe is moving time doesn't exist, we will never know if it does or does not, to be honest.

If we can still move then time is passing, it's just that we use the sun as reference. But since all of our digital and mechanical clocks are already programmed we can still keep track of time.

Time is a concept. Technically, it doesn't exist as a tangible or directly measurable object, but we choose to measure it by movement of certain things. Technically it doesn't exist, it's something created by people, but still, it's difficult to think about it not existing.

There is no doubt about the fact that 'time' exists, simply because we've made up the concept and use it. The question really is whether 'time' is something more (or less?) than we make it to be, like a fourth dimension.
