Was that supposed to be rhetorical? I'm not sure where you were going with that; would you like to give us your answer?

Well, America is an armed society, England is a mostly un-armed society. Which of these is known for being polite?

Not really rhetorical, but popular culture would definitely point to one over the other.

Sounds like a good time to learn some Kung-Fu if you live in the UK, cause if you get mugged you're going to be unarmed while your assailant will surely not be.
Already done :D

I am also looking into getting another pair of bracers, a pair that will be of some use. I don't like the idea of arming myself when going out (and I think my Bo-Staff would stand out a bit) but I don't want to go over the top and buy a full suit of armour.

In one study, boys aged 9-15 were strongly warned not to touch guns. However, when left alone with a gun, about a quarter touched and played with it. Almost all then denied doing so when they were asked. None of the boys touched any other forbidden item after being warned against doing so. "The results of the current study indicate that guns hold a unique allure and cast further doubt on the ability of gun admonitions to keep children safe around guns" (Hardy 2003, 352).

Each year you kill more ppl by "accident" than in self defense :(

"not untill you say 'please'..."
If they're actually cheeky enough to say "Please?" do you reward them by giving them your wallet?
I award you one wit cookie. That made me giggle.

I take it a police society means that the society is governed by a strong authoritarian body of laws which is violently, sternly enforced. Research will show you that most dictatorships quickly begin illegalizing weapons for general public ownership and use, usually under the pretense of domestic social security. This leaves the armed forces of the ruling establishment with all of the firepower, making the civilian body extremely vulnerable and easily pacified.

That is a police society.

It is shown that the countries with strict gun laws have far fewer gun crimes per million population.
I would imagine countries with stricter vehicle ownership laws / fewer cars also likely have fewer automobile related crimes. ^_~

In fact a lot of the countries with stricter gun laws have lower murder rates overall..
I think it is fallacious to argue that murder rate is completely contingent on gun control. Here in the US, states that have the highest rates of violent crime typically have the most restrictive gun control. By that theory, all the states without such gun control should have far more rampant crime statistics.

Many factors result in violent crime from a person's background and upbringing to current social and economic factors in their life. Many more factors than whether or not they have access to a firearm.

I've been thinking how I could make a bo staff that could fit in my pocket, yet be telescoping from both ends, and not break easily.
It's a toughie unless I think of making it out of diamond. And it would have to be tapered.

Also: good reading, if you can filter through the fire! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.68867#642579]

Could you modify a telescopic fishing rod? T'would be more like a whip but it's better than cutting up my 6foot redwood Bo.

I have some Kaili\Eskrima sticks too, they're a bit stealthier :D

Stereotypically, the English are more polite. We both know it isn't true though..

So, would you say the Americans are more or less polite than the English? I'd say the Eskimos are probably the politest of them all, and there's no guns there.

There's a big difference in wanting to be polite and having to be polite. Martial Law would make us all a lot politer, but at what cost?
