Umm, how about. "I don't give two shits about your opinion in this?"

A pretty solid argument.
Yeah i tried this against my brothers girlfriend when she had a go at me about pirating a game which i bought later that day when i enjoyed it. Now she wakes me up everyday at 5am when she goes to work...

I'm not a big fan of Lincoln Park.

Piracy is a way of life, especially here in Thailand where the average person would never be able to afford games or software legitimately.

Quest For Glory! or any of the other 100's of games that are no longer available legally. I won't pirate new stuff, or stuff that has been re-distributed, but games like QFG that I used to own... I don't feel so bad.

Oh and who's Linkin Park? *grin* Sorry just couldn't care less for their music.

I usually pirate when there's no demo for a game, I'd like to see if my PC can run the game and I'd like to see if I like it. Being there's no return policy on games it makes it hard to try it no? So I grab a torrent and try it, if I like it, I buy it. If not why the hell would I keep the damn game on my PC?

To you silly people saying there's no excuse to pirate, there is, and I just said it. If the company wont provide a demo then I'll make my own.
check the hardware specs and read reviews maybe?... your argument isn't really absolute

Abandonware of this sort is the only time I'd justify piracy. Otherwise, there's no excuse. And this is coming from an on-off pirate.

Hardware specs is a bit of a tricky issue in that a lot of the time they're very, very wrong. The number of games I've installed where I'd beat the "Recommended system specs", only to suffer lag while running it on the medium presets with no anti-aliasing is ridiculous.

My excuse for piracy is that most of the stuff I listen to isn't physically available in stores. Hell, sometimes I can't even find the album I want on iTunes.

If, however, you're going to steal boring, polished, overrated garbage like Linkin Park, then don't be surprised when Warner and the RIAA nail you screaming to a cross.

That's the secret. Listen to better music. Stop downloading Disturbed and Lady Gaga and Kanye fucking West. Then you won't be fined or put in prison. It's that simple.

I suppose I'm not really one to talk about these things, I just bought a computer and it runs anything on low quality and I'm fine with that. but I can understand how others feel that playing with thier graphics low is a real downer and the enjoyment you get takes a hit.

I bet you have a friend who could get that computer going faster though... maybe not.

So today I got into an argument with a friend who labeled me a criminal because I pirate a fair bit of software. I've used up all my usual reasoning on him until so I had to think of something new. It was today that I also downloaded Linkin Park's new album, A Thousand Suns and the only word I can think to describe it is just bad. It's really bad, it has nothing of the Linkin Park of old and even if it wasn't by them it would still be a shitty album. This is what I used in my argument, that if I paid good money for that at a store I would be outraged that I had wasted my hard earned cash. As it is I'm just annoyed that a band I used to quite like has gone so downhill (though that's not new news or anything).

So Escapists, I pose you two questions.
1. What is your excuse for Piracy?
2. What did you think of Linkin Park's new album? It's alright you can say it's bad.
Piracy is not a criminal offence in Australia. It is a crime but interestingly under Australian law the copyright holder must show that you by Pirating something caused them to lose money.

I.e if the game or movie was not available in Australia it's very hard to be prosecuted for it since the company is not selling it here and so it follows that you downloading the film / music e.t.c. costs them nothing.

Also I noticed someone said that DRM is an excuse for pirating a game. If you own a legal copy of the game in Australia you are allowed one back-up of the piece of software it doesn't matter that they might have DRM on it, DRM circumvention is not a crime in Australia if you own a legal copy.

Well in my country you don't need an excuse to pirate since everyone is doing that, and also, people consider you an idiot if you bought something when you could have just pirated it. It also doesn't help the fact that games here are expensive and the economic state of the country is not so good.

What is your excuse for Piracy? say if a game i got stopped working and i have already payed for it i am entitled to download it instead of paying for a new copy

What did you think of Linkin Park's new album? It's alright you can say it's bad. i have not listened to it yet

this argument will always have mixed feelings

"Its bad" isnt an excuse for piracy, sure the album may have not held up to your standars but the point is that you broke a law in place (as many do "shiftey eyes") its still against the law....

It's not that it detracts from the overall fun, it's more that it's incredibly annoying to install a game that the developers say you can play quite comfortably, only to get hit with running the game at 25fps because the listed system requirements are wrong. And woe betide anyone that buys one of those games when they only meet the minimum requirements. 30fps at 640x480 resolution does not make for an enjoyable game session.

My question to you though is this:

Would you actually have payed for it if it was good? Yeah, I didn't think so.
Although I use the argument that "it gets people into the game that would maybe never have gotten into it without piracy" I still don't think its a very good argument (Although, Marvel Comics, if you are reading this, You really won a lot by me pirating Civil War.)

Thing is, not a lot of people tend to buy what they pirated, unless they pirate it to get it earlier.

I tend to stop pirating, when I feel the legal offer is better than piracy.
Because in a lot of medium, they ask me to pay more money for a product that is inferior to the pirate copy on the net. But if the legal channels are better, then they have my money ;)

Marvel is a good example of almost making it work. They have their online comic viewer, which is decent, but I still feel it can't compare to CDisplay. (But in this case I pay for the online viewer too :p)

But after Spotify came (to bad for anyone living outside Spotify regions), I have not pirated any music... becasue I really did not need to.

And that brings me back to your example. Today there are so many ways to find out of an album is good or bad, through legal channels, so why use illegal channels?

*Goes to legally download The new Linkin Park Album*
You pirated civil war!!!!!!!!

its awesome isnt it!!!!! i love it so very much (i brought it but whatever
the punishers appearence is so so awesome

Well there is one excuse for piracy here in my country. Here most Games, Movies and Albums cost much more!
Australians complain but they have it VERY EASY there.
The average person here gets 300-400 leva (1 euro is 1.94 leva) and the average PC game is 80 leva. 80...
A console game is 120-130... Thats why no sane person buys consoles, get a gaming PC for 1300 leva and game BETTER.
Its unfair with movies too, and most albums.
I do not pirate, but I understand the reasoning.
Thats actually only about $10 more for games than Australia has it, but that still is a fair bit to pay. You poor, poor bastard.

As many years of capitalism have shown us, something which is "against the law" is more synonymous with "what business do not like" than with what is actually bad.

If it's pop[ular] music we're talking about you can try it pretty easily on youtube before buying. Then they usually even have that little link to buy it if you like it.
