You guys may be on the same county network then. That's how it is for us. We have a single internet filter for the whole Wayne County school network, but individual schools may add sites and categories to the blacklist if they want. THS, my main school, has the basic filter. I can get to The Escapist no sweat. GIHS, the school I transfer to for my Networking class every day, is the one with the Nazi filter on it.archwiccan said:

I forgot what my comps blocked but I do remember what they didn't. In 8th grade i had to write and draw a comic for history class that had something to do with World War 2. I used google images and looked up "superheroes" and found a naked woman who had painted herself to look like captain america. I also found a pic of Spiderman in mid-coitus with Hawkgirl (or whatever the hell she's called.) on the side of a building. It didn't let me go to the site though.

Guess what? It is the school's computer network, not yours. They have every right to block whatever they want on their servers. I used to work for a company that provided internet access for hotels. We had to control the ammount of bandwidth that guests were using so that the servers didn't get overloaded. First priority was people using the internet for actual work-related sites. If we got calls from people trying to get actual work done saying that they were getting kicked off the network or were having really slow page loading times, we would check the servers to see who was using up the bandwidth. People playing games online and talking in chat rooms and online forums got their bandwidth reduced so that the business travellers could get work done. Most schools and even some businesses do not have people on staff to adjust bandwidth on the fly to keep the servers from getting bogged down. The other option is to block as many sources of high bandwidth use (especially leisure sites like forums).
Another reason to block a lot of sites in computer labs is to reduce the risk of users downloading viruses into the network. Viruses are a real pain in the neck to get rid of causing lots of downtime and money.
Besides, at school, you are supposed to be using the computers to research for class projects , not screwing around on forums.

I had a similar incident happen to me several years ago as well (it wasn't a gaming website, but I liked visiting it a lot). I can understand that these servers are not our own and we should be using them for work-related purposes instead of gaming, though I do recall having some difficulties reaching some websites for research purposes, only to get blocked by that god awful Betsy program (the program used to block "naughty" websites at my school that time).
A bit off topic, but I remember one of these "for your protection" sites being used at a cousin's house blocking me from doing a simple google search for roguelike games to show my cousin what I was talking about. A roguelike game! I was so mad I just screamed, "What, I can't look at a naked '@' sign?!?" I never liked censorship. -_-

Oh yes, this happened to me, then I proxied, then they found ways of stopping the proxies by a surveilance computer, It is a fortress I tell you, they don't like us...

See this is one good thing about being in a school in the south. Most of the teachers only know how to do powerpoints let alone know about The Escapist. So considering that I was brought onto here by watching an episode of X-Play (something I doubt a staff member of the education board would watch) and saw a preview of Zero Punctuation I would assume that The Escapist is a pretty closed lip site when it comes to finding out it exists, even for a nerd like me. I spent 2 years looking for a site about games with a mature community and I found out by a small 2 minute preview.
So I can imagine that it will be hard for my school to find out about The Escapist...for now.

at my primary school a few years back (wen i went there), the school blocked google images coz all the year ones/receptions kept looking up sonic on google images. If you dont kno what that comes up with (or used to) then heres someenlightenment. Its a pic of sonic doing tails. The teachers got angry and the school blocked it all...how sucky for us
