Boring as hell depends on the point of view. ;-) But probably not the optimal choice for friends that lack attention span.
I don't lack in attention span at all. I actually love games with lots of grind. But Eve, for me, was boring as all hell. Most MMOs try to hide that you're playing a spread sheet dressed up as a video game but Eve puts it proudly on display. I couldn't get into it at all.
I didn't mean to suggest you were lacking attention span. But the OP said his friends did. Thats why I figured it probably wouldn't be a good choice for them.

Eve indeed does put it's spreadsheet gameplay proudly on display, some people love it for that. And others understandably get turned off by it.

But in other cases Eve can be a really good choice for a small group of friends willing to put in some time and build up an organization. It's much more fun and much easier to do, when working with people you know.

DDO does have group stuff early on, and it's abit different than your standard, WoWesque MMO combat wise. If you want something a little closer to WoW, LOTRO has the Great Barrow stuff at level 20. (If you and a friend quest and level up together, you could probably hit 20 using one of your weekends. Using google to find things when necessary)
