imagine an MMO based on bugs, i know your thinking "that would be shit" but continue to read. Everything is based around the hive at the beginning you choose to join a certain hive kind of like a faction. you then choose a basic class beetles are a tank class (heavy armour and attack but slow moving and can carry more pollen), wasps are more of a scout/interception class (weaker armour with a powerful attack and fast movement), spiders are like a rogue/assasin (very weak armour but can trap enemies with web and use stealth to great effect. a mantis would be similar but no webs). i think you get the point about classes now as bugs are so diverse the range of classes would be incredible

after picking you basic class you are then introduced to the hive which is the central HQ for you faction where you can buy new "equipment" like a new set of fangs or a new type of venom or even some stronger webs or such like. you are then set out to gather resources the main resource being pollen which must be taken back to the hive to be turned into nectar and nectar can then be used to upgrade the hive and buy new gear. enemy factions will be competing for precious pollen and other resources. enemy wasps might have spotted your team moving a large amount of pollen so they set up a load of spiders and mantises to ambush your party

if the enemy can build up a large enough army the could even try and attack your hive and make off with some of the nectar

like i said as bugs are so diverse a massive amount of customisation in terms of class and appearance would be possible and there could be some really fun gameplay

EDIT: could also work really well as an RTS

I've thought about having an RPG game playing incests too, and it seems like a nice way of having elements unique from the standard affair. Though I would think the game would involve playing a swarm of bugs, or rather play a cleaver insect, like Psithyrus, that can use pheromones to manipulate a swarm to fight on their side. Then you can go out and search for bugs to include into your swarm. And finding new tricks to capture others.

Would be fun if there some macro-bosses out there too. Playing as such a small thing.

Sounds interesting . But most people have no interest in bugs . Like me . I would never touche any game based on bugs . I just don't find bugs appealing . But it could make for an interesting RTS.

But as an RTS? Sounds fucking awesome. Make it happen and I'll buy it, provided it's polished.
I was about to say the same thing. As an RTS this would be a fantastic idea. I thought about it in the past actually.

I'll be a giant centipede. Good poison attack, high speed, and durability. It'll be fun to prey on yummy, juicy spiders.

Yeah, me too. I mean you could role play as the oldest brother or buxom mother, or perhaps as the perky teenage younger sister. That would be a pretty interesting game.

shhhh...... dont give away my secret

on a serious note there could be really cool environments and customisation could be very vast and not to mention how there would be a huge emphasis on team work (Hive mentality) and interaction between classes would be critical

When I saw the title I thought it would be an mmo filled with glitches and stuff that the players had to fix lol

All I can think is this:

Still, I wouldn't just reskin the usual MMORPG formula with bugs; that's a huge waste of the material's potential. If anything, I'd rather see it work more like EVE and use fictional chimeras of various bug and like critters who have a "survival of the colony" mindset.
I mean, there are all kinds of ants and bees and stuff that you could slap some new features on and make awesome insect races.

Also, those giant Japanese wasps sound like fucking helicopters as is. Blow that up to insect-scale, and you have the equivelent of a giant, terrifying battleship that instills more genuine fear than any fantasy Death Star.

There was this RTS game based on the Ant colony ages ago (around the PSone era I think or maybe the PS2?). I suppose that could work but it seen more of an visual gimmmink which a mmo game need more than that to suceed.

This is going to date me, but there was this terrific P&P game called Chitin by Metagaming (now defunct). Superintelligent hives (but not so bright individual warrior bugs) fighting it out while workers tried to harvest the crops. And just like with ants, the corpses of the fallen make for good eating, so you'd have fights over those, too.

It was supposed to get expanded into a bigger campaign style game, Hymenoptera, but that never happened, alas. Love to see something similar as an RTS.

Heh, my first thought as well :)

"MMOs are getting a bit old - lets do the same thing, but with a different aesthetic. That would be great!"

I mean, I've had an idea for a plant-based RTS where you develop a species cell by cell to out-compete your rivals to the available resources whilst surviving (or using) pests, natural disasters and the dreaded humans! The variety in nature is insane, and the gameplay mechanics just grow from the source material. Plus, done right and you could get a decent working knowledge of plant Biology and botany - win win!

That right there? That's a new idea, inspired by real life and a dash of the essence of what Spore aspired to be.

Or, you know, you could make a TD with leaf cannons and spore launchers.

Wow, spelling error of the year right there.
Too good of an error to correct. That's for sure.

Insect incest. I blame everyone pointing out this typo for making me think of that concept. And now you cannot un-think that either.

The problem I find with this sort of game often is that a faction usually snowballs like hell, specially if the ' leading faction ' gets bonuses, people just open up the game and join the leading faction, people on other factions defect and start a new character in the faction. I've seen this in at least 4 games, where a 'faction' wins every single week every single time. It gets pretty old pretty fast.
