I was thinking about how I used to play videogames before being able to link up and go against people over the internet really caught on where I live. Single player 24/7, at least aside from whatever npc character I got stuck with for awhile.

Anyways, discussion value:
What npc character do you consider having grown closest too?
First pokemon?
Navi from OoT?
Maybe it's just a dog you picked up in Fallout.

Let's hear your stories.

For me, it's a felyne named Bell in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
Clocked a ton of hours in there and have had my butt saved more than a few times with that cat taking the fireball for me. It was always a little comical sidenote during the middle of a stressful hunt. Sometimes I'd get caught in a explosion when it tried to toss a bomb to the stunned wyvern, other times it'd scavenge up that one last item I needed so I didn't have to go through the quest again. Not having anyone around with the same game, it was usually the only companion I had on all those quests.

Your Partner in the Pokemon Myster Dungeon games. There was never anything much to their character but over the course of the game I felt myself getting closer to them. I remember feeling real emotional in Explorers as you:

Watch your Partner walk all the way back from Temporal Tower alone, having watched you disappear from existance for what you both think is permanent.

Of course this is a Pokemon game and Dialga brings you back into reality, but for the time it lasted I got all teary even though I knew things were going to be fixed.

Maybe it was because they go through everything with you, never apart for more then a moment. From the first dungeon to the last.

Although you never really interacted with her, I somehow felt very attached/empathic towards Saria in OoT; she was Links only true friend in the Kokiri Forest, and you could tell she was awake; not ignorant and ladada like the rest of the Kokiri.

Nintendo is very good at bringing emotion/empathy into their games.

I don't think I have a closest NPC. And I mostly play singleplayer anyway. I suppose if there is one that stands the most in my memories it's Jiub from Morrowind. You know

Wake up, we're here. Why are you shaking? Are you ok? Wake up.
Stand up... there you go. You were dreaming. What's your name?
Well, not even last night's storm could wake you. I heard them say we've reached Morrowind, I'm sure they'll let us go.
Quiet, here comes the guard

Well, I don't really play favourites so this is just one example of many, but, well... this scene made me grin like a fool.
