Over the course of the years more and more open world and sandbox games have emerged. My quistion to you is whats your favorite open world game and why. (or favorite parts from several open world games)

I rather like Saints Row 2's because of the differences in the areas and the plenty of vehicles that you can get around in making it accessible. Your turn

Minecraft was pretty good. Kind of got boring though. No real sense of danger at night and those god damn creepers always blowing up my house.

Just Cause . I was tempted to say 2, but for me the beauty of 2 is surpassed by the sheer fun i achieved in massive chases in Just Cause across whole island archipelagos.

Probably either Red Dead Redemption for the world itself and all the freedom it gives you, or Spider-Man: Web of Shadows for the sheer fun factor of webbing around NYC.

I'm in a similar internal struggle, but I'm saying Just Cause 2 because they did the grapple hook right.

I don't really like open/sandbox games when it comes to non-mmo games. It's just like in real life, sandbox alone gets boring quickly if you can't steal the toys from other kids or throw some sand in their eyes. When i play singleplayer games i prefer to have some story and reasoning behind it, some purpose and driving force that pushes everything forward. Even in those semi-open games, the fact that the 'open' content is either run aimlessly or do side missions that are in no way relevant to main plot is not something i enjoy.

I much prefer openness of the world in games like Eve, where at least i get to interact with someone and not be limited to scripted events.

I thought that was the danger. Am I missing something?

Red Faction: Geurrilla

Somewhat ruined every other open world game for me due to it's wonderful mechanic that gives you the ability to DESTROY EVERYTHING.

I am going to go with Saint's Row 2 as well for the seemless integration of co-op. So often in these games they developers refuse to add co-op or they only add co-op in different sections of the game other than the main story. What could be more fun than running around a city with a bud causing mayhem?

There's no danger when you can respawn wherever you want, sleep the entire night and if you somehow manage to die just go back and grab your gear. Shit blowing your house up is just a nuisance.

All GTA games before 4 were great. beating hookers has never been as fun.

GTA IV, nothing has been anywhere near as immersive. Honourable mentions go to Vice City and Fallout 3.

Yes, god I must have spent hours just webbing around the city with no real purpose. Some of the most fun I had in any Spider-Man game

When I look back at it, I really enjoyed Far Cry 2. It just looked amazing and was fun (besides being the most hated person anywhere).

Bully. Seems obvious, given my avatar. I think Bully has the most fun gameplay in any open world game I've played. You get a plethora of unique and fun-to-use weapons, tons of clothing options that range from slummy to classy to outlandish, and a sandbox that is the perfect size. The town of Bullworth is just big enough to feel like a real town but not so big that getting around it is ever tedious.

I probably like Red Dead Redemption more as a game, but less as an open-world game. It's gorgeous and exploring is nice, but the game can really drag.

The first Assassins creed. Yeh the plot sucked. But AMAZING setting, detail, etc. etc.

One of my least favourite sand box games is real life.. Far too much attention to detail and way too big.
