Well, that part of the game also took me by surprise, but I found it very interesting and a good way to solve things.
this.

any game that allows persuasion or charm or intimidate, i max that shit out to see what i can do outside the realm of fighting, as there usually is different plot options or cutscenes which i thoroughly enjoy getting,

that end sequence tho is probably in my top 5 of all time with the battle and all and sovereign getting lit up like a ************

Not really innovative. It's been done before.
if you dont want anything that has been done before you should never play a game that has come out the last ten years.

I was pretty surprised too. Now, if only I could have been that convincing with Malak...

Fallout had another alternative to fighting the villain - you could just arm the nuke yourself and leave. You didn't even need to lay eyes on the Master in order to defeat him.

One of the problems I had with ME2 was the antagonist. Saren was such an awesome bad guy, he was intelligent, cunning and ruthless, but all of his motivations made sense in a way. He studied the effects of Indoctrination to see if he could overcome it, sure he tortured people to do it but maybe there was no other way. There was still something of a humanness (turianness?) to the character as well, the thought of an unbeatable robotic army scared the shit out of him, he tried to hide it but you could see the fear. He thought that maybe, just maybe, there was hope for survival in submitting to the Reapers.

ME2, unfortunately, didn't have any of that. In the end it was just

another reaper, trying to build another reaper for reasons unknown

There was no main villain you could really relate to.
