You know, take the word "for" out of the title, and this bit of news becomes even more interesting.

They can count me to be there for launch. I'll try to get my sister and her husband (WoW addicts both) to try it, too.

Can SweaTer (eh, it's no "MewTwo") pull it off?
Gotta say I laughed pretty hard at "SweaTer"
The game is shaping up pretty well though. Could certainly be great.

Sweater. I like it.

Hey guys, wanna play some sweater?

dude, I could out-sweat you any day.

But all this reminds me of that episode of how I met your mother where Ted met a girl on world of warcraft. Much ridicule was had after. But at least they actually used WoW for that section of the episode (I spotted a Dranii!)

See, a Star Wars MMO has the makings right from the off of being a great game. But I won't be playing it. Why? Subscription fees.

Drop subscription charges for MMOs and companies like Blizzard and Bioware would get a lot more subscribers, a lot quicker...
They're incredibly expensive to operate. That won't happen.

I will never understand being so against subscription fees when you get so much more per dollar than you do with most full length games.
Guild Wars and DDO more recently and maybe Free Realms if you count that have proven you can be incredibly successful and still not charge subscription fees. I would never have tried DDO unless the game was structured the way it was. But I did and liked it and ended up subbing for three months.

I'm not against subs, but paying 50 for a boxed game that can't be played offline, then paying 15 to continue using that game seems like the game company wants to have their cake and eat it to.
Most of them give you a free month when you purchase the game. the month of WoW that I actually played it was free with the game.

I might try it but only if they have a disc version of the client available in a shop. I hate downloading the clients from the sites.

Well aren't we naive. Either EA learned absolutely no lessons from Warhammer Online, either the players didn't since this marketing strategy appears viable still. Maybe both. Who knows? I can't wait to find out what happens.

It might, depending on a few things:

1. Is it finished? I can't stress this enough! Most MMOs tend to ship in what can best be described as an early beta version. Then the influx of players from older, more developed games (*cough*WOW*cough*) come in, see the rough edges and decide they aren't sticking around to see if it gets better. This is an especially touchy point in this case since EA has a reputation for pushing out games before they've been finished and polished and I don't think they understand how much they'll be shooting themselves in the foot if they rush TOR. First impressions are everything for an MMO nowdays, and you only get one shot at it.

2. Is it new? WOW clones fail because they can't compete with WOW. Blizzard's virtual crack machine has had years and years of fine tuning to get it to where it is today. The only way a game stands a chance is to strike out in a new direction, but at the same time not stray too far from the familiar (gamers HATE change). TOR has a good chance here, with its focus on plot and story while at the same time maintaining a familiar basic gameplay and interface.

3. Is it any good? Are the controls responsive? Are the servers lagging? Are the classes balanced? And most importantly, did the innovations work? I'm still quite unclear about how Bioware plans to do choices and branching story lines in a multiplayer environment. Seriously, I ca think of several ways to go and they all suck. This is a big concern for me and will likely be the make-or-break point for TOR.

I think it will easily hit 2 million subscribers on or shortly after launch. Keeping them, however, is a different story though and will depend largely on the quality of the game.
it might happen just like in Age of Conan...

How many does WoW have? I reckon this could do it, easy.
It's the only MMO I've ever been interested in, and the rule of thumb of the internet; you're never the only one.
WoW has 11 million worldwide.
Huh, and 2 million is a good target for SWTOR? Jesus, I knew WoW had the majority of the market but I didn't really have a clue how much they were totally dominating it.

I'm not getting it till the bulk of the content rush is over. All those people salivating at once is enough to make me want to purge every meal ive ever eaten. Main reason i dont play Wow.

Well, in my case anyway, I've never played WoW or indeed, any MMO at all. So hopefully these two issues won't matter to me.

This, of course, will be an issue for anyone playing it. But as I said before, I have faith in Bioware - they've never dissappointed before.

You do bring up some excellent points, sir.

Well, they're not getting my money. I can't stand MMOs, as they tend to favor min/max'ing and builds. I KNOW, I KNOW! There are ALWAYS exceptions.

Unless this game proves me wrong.

It would help it I gave a shit about Star Wars.

I haven't seen the Original Trilogy in over 10 years. I can't remember shit about it. And don't really care enough to go watch it.

That is, if you can play as the Nautolan race. If no then bah the hell with it!! I want to play as my favorite race :(
As far as I can tell, there aren't any player races aside from human. Which is a shame, given the abundance of cool aliens in Star Wars. It'd be cool to be a Wookie or Rodian or something.

NO WOOKIES! I hated wookies in SWG. I only took bounties on players I knew had wookie friends and I have several lovely wookie skin rugs.

Important to note that WoW might have 11 million worldwide, but over half of that player base is outside of North America / Europe.

So, unless EA is planning to launch SWOR in all those other countries (which includes re-recording voice overs in the native language) is that EA is looking for SWOR to have about 50% market share of WoW in NA / EU.

That's... ambitious.

Still, the rumours are that SWOR has a budget of over $200m, so perhaps they are just going to throw enough money at the game and hope it creates a successful title.
