Only two months after I bought a PS3 and it completely craps out on me. Locked up while playing a movie and no longer sends out video over any connection type, regardless of power cycles or display setting resets.

My track record this generation is now two dead Xbox 360s and one dead PS3. I may be cursed, but anyone that claims significantly better reliability can now officially bite me.

Thankfully, the only things I'm missing out on are Disgaea 3 and the Iron Man Blu-Ray. I'd probably be much more upset if I was actively playing it.

I think you may have annoyed this Generations Gods. But seriously having only ever owned the one PS3, I have only a issue with it, and thats my wireless internet, which I'm pretty sure is something to do with it having to go through 3 walls to get to my PS3... and its still not that bad.

Yep you are cursed.
Ours just crashes at inopportune moments but that goes for both consoles. But the 360 sounds like an aeroplane these days so I'm getting concerned.

Never had a problem with my ps3 but my Xbox broke on me and it wasn't the 3 RROD, only 2. They wanted me to pay 100 bucks so I sold it to Gamecrazy and got 200 bucks for it.

Unlucky perhaps? The closes thing I've had to a broken console was my first PS2 (still up and running). It froze up a couple of times, but all I had to do was dust off the insides and it worked like new.

Another anti-PS3 thread, this time presented as a complaint about hardware but also managing to criticise the games too! Hurrah!
When I read it, it seemed more like an anit-anygames console running for the poor fella thread.

You must admit that is fairly unlucky!

Not always, OP have you ever bought WoW gold or anyother MMO currency? If so that would easily explain why the gaming gods hate you

One hardware failure does not a trend make.

That said, I've not yet been sufficiently motivated to dump $400 on a console. You can buy a decent PC for that price these days. Throw in $100 and it'll do Blu-Ray.

Was it one of the start ps3's? They are the ones that commit sucide the most. From blu-ray drive sucking ass and such.(Somehow, blaming the graphics chips woudn't work.(I doubt you could kill 3 chips unless your trying very fucking hard.)

You have a strange idea of "decent". I blew ~2000 on mine and I still know people with hardware that would eat mine for breakfast.

Well...Statistically the PS3 was 100% more reliable to you...

Also, you might be the electronic world's equivalent of death itself... How many toasters have you murdered this past semester?

Just FYI, the turn-around on warranty return of a PS3 is roughly 5-7 days, if you don't sit on your RTM box. When possible, they send you back the exact same machine. Just make sure you make a backup of your Disgaea save. ;)

The problem you describe sounds like either a bad cable/interface or a messed up video board. I'd also like to point out that just because you happen to have pulled a bad PS3, that does not necessarily mean the defect rate is larger than the general electronics manufacturing standard of 3-5%. I'm not sure where you are getting your impression of a claim of significantly better reliability, except perhaps in the mostly no hassle returns that Sony now accepts. This also would apply to your 360s if either were purchased in the last 6-8 months or so.

It's not an anti-PS3 thread, it's a general complaint about the current state of console reliability. If it makes you feel better, I don't play any games on my Wii either. I'm currently actively playing LOTRO on the PC, and Fallout 3 and Rock Band on the 360 (hence why I was far more upset when the 360 died).

I built the forums, I can whine if I want to :p

Nope, brand new 80gb SKU - manufacture date of July 2008. I suspect a complete failure of the video chipset - it's the only thing that makes sense. The system will still load and eject discs, though that's not very helpful unless I want a very expensive CD holder.

I've a strange idea of decent? My friend, "decent" should not be defined by what every punk with a good job and computer fixation is willing to dump on their computer. That's the thoroughly unrealistic definition.

I guess my definition of "decent" would just be that it's "decent enough to run modern games without it being genuinely masochistic." My $400 system example should be able to handle, say, Assassin's Creed.

$400 will get you a solid (2.6 Ghz single core) processor, decent motherboard, 2 GB of cheap ram, a [500] GB hard drive, and still have about $150 left over for a video card which (if carefully picked) should be capable of running any game on the market successfully.

Well, a monitor or operating system will probably push you above the $400 price tag, but aside from that, I'm pretty sure the definition of $400 for a "decent" system applies.
