We're all fans of things, everyone is, some of us came early to the part and some of us only came once it was popular. Personally I am a big fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, and after I read the books, I recommended them to everyone one I know, pretty much all of them just kind of went, "yeah, ok Jordan I'll totally check that out" except that is meant to be read in the way of dismissing something while pretending to be interested, and everyone basically ignored me. Cut to now, and ever since the show came out the same people have been coming up to me "Hey man, have you heard of Game of Thrones?" and all I can think is "fuck you cunts, I fucking told you about it five fucking years ago and you fucking ignored me, so don't fucking act like you're somehow hip for knowing about it now that the show is a massive hit". Of course, it pisses me off even more when its people who only watch the show, it makes me want to crucify them.

So what sort of things have you experienced (perhaps to a lesser extent with less swearing) this with?

Edit: Wow guys way to miss the point on two levels. First off, I'm talking about two kinds of people, The people I'm talking about that piss me off are either the people who blew me off when I told them about the books years ago, and then act like they were somehow on the ground floor when it took off, or people who never read the books and act like they're somehow special/super cool because they watch the show, despite the fact that its one of the most popular show in the world.

It has nothing to do with people liking it now that its popular, I love the fact that the books are getting the recognition they deserve, because they are great books that if I had my way, everyone would read, its about the type of people I mentioned above.

And Secondly, I didn't make this thread to discuss what a dick I am because I get annoyed with these people (I don't actually sit there and curse at people, its a little thing known as being hyperbolic), its about times you've encountered shit like this. Only two people have actually addressed the question, the rest of you guys just basically called me a dick.

"I LIKED GAME OF THRONES BEFORE IT WAS COOL!!!"

I'm sorry, but that's basically what you're saying. I can appreciate your frustration about this, but come on. Shit like this happens alllllllll the time. Take me, for instance. I've never once read a book by Tolkien, but ever since the movies came out, I'm a huge LOTR/Hobbit fan. I won't say I never made the effort to read the books, because I have. I just can't do it though. The writing style is pretty dry, and the sheer length is daunting. Besides, the movies are awesome and more or less faithful, so I don't think reading the books is something I need to bother with. Will hardcore Tolkien lovers hate me for it? Probably. But it doesn't matter, because there is no such thing as a "true fan," there are just fans.

I think you need to chill out a bit. I get your sentiment, but shouldn't you be happy something you like has gotten popular. Yeah, some people just watch the show and pretend to know it all, but the popularity of show has also gotten a whole new audience to try and read the books as well and that's good for everyone. It's good for the Martin to get the exposure and praise he deserves for books that he's poured a lot of time into and because the show is popular you'll get to see all your favorite characters on screen and see the ones you hate hopefully get what's coming to them. I remember reading the first three books way back in high school and they were awesome back then. I guess the other thing that's nice here is the show is done right even when it adds or cuts things from the books it's usual for the better because of the difference in the mediums.

I don't get as annoyed as you but I guess to say something on the topic I don't like the condescending tones of people that always have to say yeah, well the books are better, or the manga is better than the anime. Yes, it can be true a lot of time especially where anime is concerned, but a lot of times those people don't mean better they just mean things are done differently. Then I feel the need to explain books and movies/anime/manga are different mediums and what might work in one, may very well not work in the other. Movies can never be as detailed as the books which usually means you can get a richer experience from reading, but a lot of the time movies just cut subplots that don't amount to much or characters that don't really add all that much. Yes, there are a lot of examples of bad adaptations but there are also examples of good to great adaptations even if they do seem to be in the minority sometimes. But hey I don't think anyone can say the Godfahter sucked because it dropped the chick with the giant vagina and Sonny's huge penis subplot...

While it does irk me when people say "What books?", I don't rage over it. I just kind of roll my eyes and let them go on about how they hate "Jeffrey" and how they were devastated when
Eddard Stark

died.

But we need to stop and think for a moment. Did we really all assume that everyone who jumped onto the bandwagon would dig deeper and read the books? Really? I expected this difference from the moment I got into the books (around when season 1 was just starting). That there would be a schism in the fanbase based on how they were introduced to Westros.

Let's just calm down about this and enjoy the series how we want to, savvy?

I will admit I only heard of A Song of Ice and Fire once the show came out. Even then I took me a while to actually watch the show.

I went and bought the books after watching a few episodes. Haven't actually started reading them yet, but hopefully they will get me back into reading books. I stopped reading them at some point.

It gets me that pissed off because the people I'm taking about are people who I recommended the book to and they ignored me, then once the show came out, acted like they were somehow special because they watched one of the most popular shows going right now. I think it is great that the books are getting the recognition they deserve, but its so very frustrating when you find something awesome, tell everyone about it, and they ignore you, only to come back a few years later talking about how great it is.

I don't really like Tolkien, so I don't blame you, but I think that the whole attitude of "oh, I watched the show/movie so I don't need to read the books" is a shitty attitude, not just because they're often missing entire parts of the stories that had to be cut due to budget or time constraints, but also because they are depriving themselves of an experience that is often time far richer than the shows/movies ever will be.

Well, people will make their own decisions. You can try to convince them of why you think it's a poor one, but in the end you can't force it on anyone so there's little reason to be upset by it. You just gotta learn to let some things be.

I'll be honest, this sounds just like Moviebob's rant about the Scream films, because he somehow "lost" the thing that made him cool when the first movie made all his obscure references common knowledge.

There's also people like me. I have a really bad level of ADD, that makes it absolutely impossible to read books. They are so full of white pages, and letters, and the scale is overwhelming. This is something that developed as I entered adulthood, because I use to read books ALL the time. Luckily for me, when reading forums, I have a darker background, and little avatars to look at long enough to distract me from all the pretty words.

A butterfly.

Most of Tolkien's prose is absolutely awful, all of his best writings were in the form of epic poetry -- and most of that is sadly unfinished. I think you need to give The Hobbit a second look, though. It's a short children's book. A fast reader could knock through it in less time than it takes to watch the first movie, and the trilogy will almost certainly take longer to watch than the book does to read. The Children of Hurin is also vastly underrated, along with pretty much everything else that takes place in the first age. That book is about as long as The Hobbit, and it's basically a long form telling of one of the best parts of The Silmarillion (which is more of a history book than a novel).

The only time this bugs me is in sports. If my buddy starts liking something years after I told them about it because it got popular, I'm alright with that since that's just more people loving what I love.

However, sports are different. The people who show up to a Superbowl party with the favored teams jersey (Oh, you're a Ravens fan now? I thought you were a Giants fans last year?) are bad people and they should feel bad for doing it!

If I have to suffer the pain and anguish of being a Vikings fan all the time, you don't get to jump on the bandwagon when we make the playoffs damn it!!!! >.<

Well, depending on the author, the source material may be neigh unreadable. So I'd get more out of the movie. (Haven't read Fire and Ice so I can't speak to that case. Haven't seen game of thrones yet either while I'm on it.)

If I were you, I'd just be glad they're experiencing something you enjoy.

Quite a few examples of me reading a book after having seen it on the screen, which I feel slightly annoyed about. I read ASOIAF (the whole series) after season 2 of GoT ended, but before season 3 began. Am I allowed into the "true fans" club...? I've devoured the entire series of books now, and I know it in minute detail, but I was still introduced to it by HBO.

Same thing with Scott Pilgrim, and Dune, and Space Odyssey. All introduced to me by the screen. On the other hand, I did read Harry Potter, Hunger Games & Battle Royale before seeing the films, so I guess it all evens out. I'm in neutral ground, and hopefully tolerated by the Kingdom of Nerdonia.

That was one of the only videos of his that I disliked not because I didn't agree with his opinion (I didn't), but I felt his whiny attitude towards the series discredited his review almost completely.

"Waaah I used to know movies and now Scream and TV Tropes have ruined my legacy!!!!1! How am I to woo girls at parties now if everyone knows basic slasher cliches!"

OT: I've gotten used to liking most music trends about 2 years before the masses start listening in. Dubstep, for example. I've started listening to a lot of trap music, so I'm sure that'll blow up in a while...

When you like something, the correct response is NOT TO CARE about other people jumping onto the bandwagon late. If they want to have a good time, let them. You don't have to prove anything to other people, 'cause that ain't cool.

I actually don't care too much for the books myself. I watched the first season of the show when it came out on a cheap DVD pack, and thought I'd give it a shot. It was a pretty fun show to watch, so I went to read the books and didn't like them.

People are entitled to take in their entertainment in any way they choose. And you shouldn't expect them to remember things you said five years ago, because that's stupid.

As long as they're not just fairweathering it, as in Tippy's Superbowl example, I have no problem with people coming in late, or via alternate methods. If someone starts watching because it's popular, and honestly sticks with it, they're as much a fan as someone from day one.

Why exactly do you care? Seriously, is it really that annoying when people aren't fans of the books but like the TV show? I tried the books and they weren't for me. So what? I will still enjoy the TV show. Me enjoying something (not the same thing mind you) that you did prior in no way should be an inconvenience to you. This whole post just reeks of the hipster "I liked it before it was cool" mentality.

I was like this when the Marvel films got popular. I was like, "I've been reading this shit since I was 8 and you fucks are just now getting into it?!"

Then I realized that attitude wasn't very helpful to anyone and discarded it. Yeah, this kind of thing can be annoying to deal with, but it's a petty thing to be bothered by and it makes you look like a jerk. You should be happy people are enjoying something that you yourself enjoy!
