The problem is eliminating which heroes can and can't be,

Wonder Woman: Obviously not, she's a woman, they said it was a guy
Batman: well known womaniser, plus the relationship with Catwoman drives some plots
Superman: and Lois Lane. This one's obvious.

So we're down to the Flash, who again has long running love interests; Martian Manhunter, who would probably have been a good option but it could have been passed off as not really gay because he's an alien; Green Arrow, another well known womaniser; and possibly Captain Marvel, who is actually a ten year old boy in an adult's body, so any sexual activity would be filled with squick.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of Alan Scott Green Lantern, so I suppose this could be a nice new reinvention for the character.

The old Green Lantern that nobody remembers still is part of the DC universe?

Yeah, he really is a MAJOR player nowadays.
If you read DC he's still very important playing big roles in 52, Blackest Night, Brightest Day and more. Yes he doesn't have much pop-culture love but he is a major character in the DCU. Or was before the reboot.
Well if that's the case then it won't be this guy, will it? I thought DC said it's someone who hasn't featured in the New 52 yet?
Different 52. See the new 52 two was so named to leech the popularity of a weekly series they did a few years back that many comic fans consider to be some of the best stories they ever wrote.

Drake? He's been off with Spoiler if she still exsits...

Actually, he's like mid-late teens, isn't he? Might make sense for him to still be struggling with his sexual orientation and all.

No worries. Not everyone follows comics heavily, and it is hard to keep all the stories straight even if you do read them (I didn't even find out there was a story called 52 until 3 months after the reboot)

Haha yeah it is. Comics are a complete mine field or as Moviebob puts it; 'COMICS. ARE. WEIRD.'

I have a better idea, instead of "re-imagining" a established character as gay, why not make a new one?
The original idea was to make a new character but that coincided with the upcoming reboot so they decided to make an iconic hero gay, just as an added bonus to the gay comic book readers and a fuck you to morons. A new hero would never have as much impact as Batman being gay.

Yeah, it might be the Green Latern, but not from some old series where they just say "yeah, he was gay." They'll be making it part of the new story arcs or something. As far as I know anyway.

That is impossible for DC. They have no originality anymore. They even have to use marketing ploys by other publishers to make sales.

Otherwise, there wouldnt be a Dog from Krypton.

Here is my impression of a DC exec..... "Sales are down, we need to think of something quick....What has marvel done recently"? Another guy in the room " Wikipedia says they just made a character gay"... DC Exec. "Fantastic. Making somebody gay is a very original idea. Glad we thought of it. Now where is our cocaine?"
I have to correct you here. MAINSTREAM-DC has no originality. The rest of probably the most original of all comicbooks. What is the "rest"? I talk, of course, of Vertigo, which is formally owned and ran by DC.

V for Vendetta.
Sandman.
Lucifer.
Fables.
Ex Machina.
Hellblazer.

If that shit ain't original, what the hell is?
Vertigo is responsible for pretty much every successful deconstruction and reconstruction of the superhero-genre. And they are still going strong
Unfortunately for the Vertigo imprint the titles just are mediocre or awful when adapted as movies. Example V for Vendetta which is ok but a failure on the box office, so yeah only readers or have knowledge with the mythos can appreciate it not the mainstream audience
Well, yeah, but so what? My point was that DC still owns (however nominally) the best and most though-provoking, original and award-winning comics out there.
Maybe that's the reason why Alan Moore(one of my most favorite writers of all time and one of the most screwed writers by DC) disowns most of the adaptations of his works, the exceptions are Watchmen and that popular Justice League: Unlimited Episode "The Man who has Everything".

If this is true, I'm kinda disappointed because thought it would be game changer with being one of the main heroes being gay and giving a giant middle finger to all the bigots out there but this wouldn't even made a ripple because for all intents and purposes he is a D-list hero.
.
Thats a stupid reason for wanting someone to be gay. You just wanna change a sexuality to spite people and possibly fans of a character who might and probably would get upset.

What, did you want batman to be gay just to anger people? screw you.

I totally disagree with using a preexisting character and then announcing it like they have, lesser known or not. They dont think a new character who happens to be homosexual can sell, so theyre using him! Theyre just taking the easy way out in my opinion.

Hey, not all of us read comic books. Some of us only watched the Justice League in our hayday.

I stand by my statement. John Stewart is my favorite DC superhero. I actually knew his name back when the Justice League was still airing, and watched each episode at least twice. Been a number of years since that, though.
