Definitely Half-Life 2 and episodes. Alyx Vance was the best digital actress I've ever seen in a game. The voice is great, and the facial expressions were perfect. Everything went perfectly right, and it made the games that much more enjoyable.

It seems we're coming to a decision fairly quickly, eh?

EDIT: Best Actor goes to Dr. Kleiner. He pulled off the eccentric scientist perfectly.

I know there's voice acting and there's movement and facial expression rendering, but they generally get discussed separately. For me there is a combo of the two that is more than just the sum of the parts, which I find myself referring to as digital acting.

I was just playing Indigo Prophecy and admiring the expressiveness of the characters, something I guess I appreciate even more in older games and previous generation consoles because they couldn't rely on high-gloss graphics for effect. It makes sense that a game that considers itself to be a playable movie would have good digital acting, but that got me thinking about other games as well. Valve has received a lot of praise for its rendering of facial expression, the lifelike eyes of its characters, and its convincing ragdoll effects. HL2 has a lot of appeal for me because its digital acting is so good. Halo, which I also enjoy so no favoritism here, doesn't have much in that regard except for perhaps Cortana.

Though I am BioWare fan, one criticism that I can make is that it is a good thing their writing is good and their voice actors are generally well chosen, because the digital acting in their pre-Mass Effect games is not that great. It's good enough, but not great. And for all the flawless rendering of their cut-scened little faces, I don't find the digital acting in the Final Fantasy games to be particularly great either. It's not just a matter of realism. The main characters in Beyond Good and Evil were well "acted" despite the fact that it was not done in a realistic fashion.

What other games should be nominated in the Best Acting category?
I can't agree with you mass effect setting a bench mark for emotion/acting. It has actually made me lower my standards from a BioWare game which I thought before would be pretty damn hard.

Funnily enough, I was going to nominate Gordon Freeman for Best Actor. [This joke is hilarious, by the way.]

Bioware games have a tendency toward "awesome" when it comes to characters, too - I'm not always sure about the animation (especially in their older games; KotOR involved walking, default facial movements, and that was it), but they've been damn fine examples of making people not care about that, and letting them enjoy the story anyway.

Best Actor goes to Gordon Freeman, Best Actress goes straight to Alyx Vance.

I wasn't the one who claimed the benchmark for Mass Effect. That would have been a different responder. I reserve judgement on Mass Effect until I have played it. I still have not bought the game because I haven't yet acquired the 360 to play it on or the time to play it.

edit:
Valve's Source engine has been noted time and again for its excellent facial rendering, and other games that have used the engine have also received a lot of praise for their characterization. Between that and the kudos is has garnered for the physics engine, you've got a game studio that continues to reap the benefits of some amazingly polished technology infrastructure. BioWare seems to have put their focus more on the story-telling, which is good enough that people don't care about the fact that the characters themselves are a bit lackluster to look at.

The Legacy of Kain series is probably worth mentioning here, since it hasn't been brought up already. Consistently good voice acting since the beginning of the series in 1996*, and the character animations in Soul Reaver 2 struck me as exceptionally good for a game released 2-3 years before Half-Life 2 and the Source engine. Simon Templeman (the voice of Kain) deserves more recognition.

*Not including Blood Omen 2, which was terrible compared to the rest of the series and only memorable when you got to the boss that ran around a lunatic asylum demanding meat. Funniest character in the whole franchise, easily.

Got to agree. HL2, Mass Effect and Bioshock were the best ones so far.

I thought Quintin Flynn did a pretty good job as Raiden on MGS4. I particularly like the bit where Snake mentions Rose and his family, and Raiden angrily snaps and screams "I HAVE NO FAMILY"... Sorry, I seem to have a fetish for random outbursts of anger =P
