So Escapists, has your own knowledge ever broken your willing suspension of disbelief?

It may not be a deal breaker, you can still enjoy the game, movie, show, book whatever but something just niggles at the back of your mind? Has something ever been so wrong that you just couldn't enjoy the subject matter anymore?

Recently I learned that the LD-50 (lethal dose for 50 percent of a population) for ionizing radiation for humans is 4 Gray or 400 rads. Playing Fallout 3 and my character is suffering radiation poisoning at 600rads. so either she is very very lucky or she is Dead!
Like I said not a deal breaker it just bothers me.
Don't worry about the rads. In the Fallout universe, which IS indeed different from our world (the timeline split at about 1950ish), radiation is treated differently than in the normal world. Take ghouls for example, these could never exist in the real world.

Speaking of CSI and guns . There was this one episode where a guy shot a pistol into the air from a balcony , the bullet flew up , and due to gravity it fell back down killing a woman lying on the grass having a pic-a-nic , is that even possible?
Depends on weight of the round and muzzle velocity.

take into account that bullets are fired at very high speeds and are aerodynamic to some extent. That means that in a time interval it will climb higher the faster it goes.

Since the bullet de-accelerates over time, the higher it climbs over time means that it will reach a good height before gravity nullifies the bullet's speed.

Take into account that the bullet will accelerate around 10 m/s each second it falls.

A bullet normally only needs 60-70 m/s to be able to penetrate skin.

A friend of mine has a bullet hole in his car. It was probably someone shooting at the sky during New Year's Eve. Pierced trough the roof and the seat.

Oh wow , thanks for that , i had no idea . I honestly thought that if you shot a bullet into the air it would be harmless when falling back to the ground. To be honest i'm a little scared now haha . But wow you really thought me something thanks.

In any case, I'll definitely look it up. Thanks for the heads-up.

The further I get immersed in a world and can come to believe it's real, the easier it is for suspension of disbelief to be broken.
This is why I actually have my characters walk all the way in some games, especially RPGs like Fallout or Mass Effect or Dragon Age. I can't believe that no one would take notice of some idiot running around all over the damn place.

The Assassin's Creed series is the only one I can think of where people actually take notice of you doing acrobatics in the middle of a bustling marketplace.

While watching a episode of House, I noticed a particularly familiar device in their microscope lab.
This little handy dandy device lets you jolt plasmids into perforated bacteria.
It has NO business in a hospital, besides the R&D department.

Of course, the brand name was fully visible, so I guess it was just a cool looking device that BIO-RAD though would look for advertisement.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn't make a lick'a sense to me. I felt as if they threw a bunch of adjectives into one show and hoped no one would question it. They went to space, then the went to future, now their fighting evil ninjas, pigs aliens, and flying brains, and I had no clue what was going on.

Ah yes, an example would be Far Cry 2's numerous weird bugs, generic respawning enemies and of course the guns.

The entire bolt carrier disappears from the AK47 while i unjam it. Every time.
It sounds like someone looped a small portion of recorded machinegun fire, which is exactly what they did. It creates no echo whatsoever.
I could go on and on and on.
