Well it's hard to do a "sad" ending in a game without leaving the player with the feeling that they wasted their time.
Eg. Contra Force

Well Star Wars: The Force Unleashed had a sad ending. Admitibly the game wasn't that great but still.

The current ending to Portal is just a kick in the teeth...

You survive all that, just to be dragged back inside and put into hibernation until you can be tested again.
Didn't we have some fun though? Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I said 'Goodbye' and you were like 'NO WAY!' and then I was all 'We pretended we were going to murder you'? That was great.

A good ending to myself is one that gives closure. Now, Batman AA was an exception, because it's comic book writing and they NEVER end comic books to bleed us comic nerds dry of all our daily allowances.

The reason that I loved the first God of War was that it had a definate ending. Shit happened, plot was resolved, end of game. God of War II contridicted that ending and added the cardinal sin of not finishing the game, but they knew they were making a sequel unlike a lot of companies, so it's okay

God of War 3 had a fantastic ending, but the problem I have with it is that they hint at something after the credits, which I don't know if it's going to spawn more God of War, or if they're going to do something else with it. But I liked the ending because until after the credits, and even still, it gave closure. That's one thing that good movies and great games do, give closure. A good sequel sometimes contradicts that, but it's because the sequel was only planned because of the first game

You want a BAD ending, Dante's Inferno...fuck you EA, fuck you!

Its not a game, but fuck me it was a depressing ending: The Mist. I can't believe no one brought it up (or maybe I just missed it. Which is possible because I'm retarded.) I mean the ending of that movie was the single most jaw-dropping, horrifying, and fucking weird shit I had ever seen in a movie. For those who don't know, and want to completely ruin a movie, read:

At the end, the protaganist has his son, and an two other people with him in a car, surrounded by that goddamned mist. They run the fuck out of gas, and so they assume they're boned silly. The main character has a gun, with 3 bullets. So he blows away his SON, and the two people with them. Then steps out into the mist and waits for the monsters to make him into a giblets-supreme. And then, the ultimate kick-in-the-nuts, the fucking military drives by, and just BLOWS the mist away. Blam. And this guy realizes he just killed his son. And 2 random people. Movie ends. Speechless staring at each-other commences.

Your welcome.

Killer 7 had something sort of like this.

You find out that the personas don't actually split from Harman, but from Garcian. Garcian murdered each member of the Smith Syndicate and then shot himself. The intense trauma that followed made them Remnant Psyches (pretty much ghosts) who were controlled by Garcian. Of course, this isn't spelled out in the game.

Also, no matter what you do, one of two things will happen: Japan invades the US, or the US invades Japan. Also, you find out that 200 years later, Kun Lan's still around, and Harman's still fighting him.

Resistance 2 had the saddest ending I can remember, and it wasn't optional. this was the definitive end.

It becomes obvious that Nathan Hale is just bits away from becoming a complete chimera, but he fights on to stop Daedalus. After fighting through hell and killing the big bad, he is on his way out of the facility with some new powers he obtained highlander style from Daedalus. While trying to escape the facility that is crumbling around him he meets up with his squad mate, Capelli. Nathan doesn't seem to care though. He looks off into the distance at a giant chimera ship and says,

"Can you hear them? They are calling to us. It's beautiful."

As Nathan approaches Capelli, Capelli pulls out his pistol and reluctantly pulls the trigger as Nathan says with an inhuman radiance,

"This is just the beginning."

They kill the only character you even give a crap about, you're character. On top of that, even though you killed Daedalus, it looks like the Chimera aren't stopping the fight. Sad day.

MOTHER 3. You end it by [Spoiler: Super sad stuff] killing your brother and destroying the world with no alternate endings [/Spoiler]

It really stings, but you still feel accomplished at the ending, because you beat the game.
It doesn't sting that much.

The world is destroyed, but a new one is created. When the game reaches "the end" you can move. Not sure if you did that, but if not, you missed out quite an important part.

Portal with the new ending is pretty depressing

All that work...no payoff

Also, HL2 has a sad ending, because
now I know it's the last time I'll ever see Breen

I did. People are still alive, the credits roll, you get praised, but at that time, there is no world. The people are just there.

Megaman Zero 4 also had a somewhat sad ending where it is presumed Zero died after killing Sigma on the Satellite as it crashed into the planet.
It's heavily implied that Weil is, in fact, immortal, meaning that Zero's defeat of Sigma is meaningless overall.

As for my choice... I'm gonna have to agree with those who said vanilla Fallout 3. Really felt like a kick in the teeth to get there only to realise that my character's death was the only way to end it well for the majority. (And the "war never changes" line in the closing movie)

Well, of course, there are multiple endings, but some of them were downright cruel. For example, if Ethan is the only one to figure out the location of his son, upon rescuing him he gets absolutely massacred by the police. Actually, the death of every character in that game was quite saddening.
And, of course,
In both cases, someone dear to Niko will die. And that's quite depressing.

GTA:IV had a sad ending, 2 in fact,
either your brother (regardless of how annoying he is) or Kate (your major prospect of a love life) die

That's all I got.

Assassin's Creed 2, for Ezio at least.

You play through everything, finally kill your nemesis and prepare to learn the Big Secret, and then some weird alien God type thing delivers a speech to the guy who has been using you as his puppet. Nobody even explains to you whats happening, so poor Ezio is left wondering what the crazy ***** was talking about.
the craziest thing is the greater implications of that ending. Presumably, that's how history has ALWAYS played out. 700 years before Desmond was born, some god projection under the vatican gave a message to HIM specifically through his ancestor.. Then 700 years later, Desmond used the animus to follow Ezio's life in order to learn how to be an assassin, and stumbles upon that almost accidentally.
