"Android customization" is a joke. And not a funny one at that.

I recently made the switch from iOS to Android because everyone was like "you can do so much with Android that you can't with iOS because it's open source!"

But this is not true. Sure there are some cool things you can do to make it do stuff, but as far as functional customizability goes, its crap. I can't even change the background color of my calendar without downloading an entirely separate app!

So, I ask you, Escapists, have you ever gone with the flow of something because it was all hyped by other people who didn't know wtf they were talking about and found out the hard way that it sucked?

Not really, since I tend to just stick with what I know unless I have a very good reason to do otherwise.

Also you've got guts to say something bad about Android on the Escapist.

With regards to your first point, I have an iPhone and don't like my sister's Android in the slightest. She's forever complaining about it as well.

OT: I tried Gear of War and Halo after everyone said how apparently they were great. They both sit on my shelf with about 10 minutes of play time each.

Nope. For example: some people started raving about "smart phones" and how they're like little portable PCs with an internet connection...
I call bullshit. Every one I've ever played with has either been slow as molasses in a snow storm, or had the battery life of a cutting laser run on standard 1.5V cells (or both, with shitty reception to boot)... also, all current touch screens are imprecise, fragile pieces of crap.

Im 21, and my phone ways more then a full can of cola.

Not because i cant afford a better phone, not because im technologically impaired, and not because im lazy.
Its because i could care less the features my phone has. Why scroll the net on my phone, when i have a computer?

Dont get me wrong, i can see their use and everything, but for me, unless i were to get one of those phones for free, i will never have one. Because as great as they are, 90% of their use is kind of a gimmick to me.

Man, I need to stop living in the past and get me one of those fancy new mobile devices that do everything from let you browse facebook to make you a morning coffee.

I bet its one of those things were beforehand, you think, meh, and afterwards you dont know how you lived without one.

Probably wont go with Android if its as shit as you suggest though, OP.
That's exactly what it is. I seriously cant figure out how I got through my first few semesters of uni without a smartphone. lol.

And don't get my wrong, its not horrible. It functions and does with its supposed to (better than Apple? Idk about that but thats a different thread) but I jumped off the iOS bandwagon BECAUSE of everything I was hearing about customization and whatnot.

I didn't say it was bad. I said the cusomization was bad. As far as the OS itself goes, its fine I guess. It does what its supposed to and gives me the functionality I need, more or less. It's not as easy as my iPhone was and I had to build some workarounds to get the same functionality the iPhone had natively, but other than that I dont hate it.

What I was getting at was that the whole reason I got an Android in the first place was because everyone said it was so much better in every way and its just not.

Also, I have a Samsung Infuse and I like it. The Bionic is a little too Blackberry-y for my liking.

oh no i got your point, just never gets old for me personally giving a wonderful jab at an apple product. (hence the reason why my friends broken ipod was tossed in our bonfire last week and i ended up pissin on it before i passed out.)

and meh, don't really listen to everyone about stuff like that, then android stuff will become the new iOS and we'll start all over again in the hate cycle.

and yeah, not sure if i'll get one of those yet, i might get the droid razr

When I think about customization, I don't think about changing the colours of the interface. I think about making my phone do things like go on vibrate when I leave the house, or the ability to replace the keyboard with something like Swype or SlideIT. I use Android because it allows me to do these things much more easily.

I can say the same thing about iOS. Everyone says it's user friendly but it isn't. The one button doesn't allow for as intricate of control as another phone with more buttons...

It's just my opinion, same as yours. You say the iphone is more user friendly and I disagree, I went back to android as soon as I could. You say that android isn't as customizable as the hype, and I say it is. :p It's all a matter of perspective and opinion.

Not really. I usually lag greatly behind social trends or just plain ignore them. The only thing I feel stupid about is signing up for Google+.

And for phones, I'm doing fine with my Nokia 5130. (At least I think it's a 5130...) If you feel the Andriod customisation is bad, feel free to try one of these.
