So for those of you who don't spend all day checking out stuff in the metal scene, recently Anette Olzon left the band Nightwish after their performance in Salt Lake City (I was at that one, yay!) Floor Jansen is taking over for the rest of the tour.

So the question really is, what now? What direction do you think the band is heading now that it is down another singer?

Personally I was rather fond of Anette as their lead singer. I think that musically Nightwish had changed enough that her voice fit in better with the stuff from the last two albums, so it is a real bummer that she is leaving. Also now any new singer has to compete with both Anette and Tarja, the fanbase is divided enough as it already is, so really I think I am just going to see where this goes.

Hence, the avatar.

I dunno what's going to happen, although I'd be okay with Floor staying as the new singer. However, she's got a band, and is committed to it, so who knows?

Hopefully Anette gets to do something less stressful and less of a toll on her health. (I kinda hope she goes back to Alyson Avenue, but they've since got a new singer, too, so who knows? She's studying to be a nurse, though, so she might be leaving the singing business altogether.)

Note: It was apparently planned that she was going to leave after this tour, but her health issues seem to be what caused that to happen early.

I don't actually follow bands, but I like Nightwish, so this is sad news to hear :(

Hopefully they don't start sucking because of this!

Well that sucks. I liked Anette! And the songs had been pretty much tailored to her voice. ;=;

And they were good! D':

It's a pity that she had to leave on the Imaginaerium tour (I have no idea how it's properly spelt), but I think this is for the best... Also don't kill me for this but I thought Tarja was the better singer (Don't kill me!).... But we must look at the bright side!

They still have Tuomas Hoppainen and Emppu (The hobbit)

Nah jk. they were both really good singers, I actually think it is rather hard to compare the two considering their styles of singing and the songs they sing in are very different.

I never really took to Anette, so I can't see I'm very troubled by it. I do hope the lessened strain will improve her health though.

Floor should be quite able to fill in, though she's more like Tarja than Anette vocally.

She was hospitalized a couple of weeks prior to the final show. The band played anyway, and that got her mad enough to take to her blog and say how upset she was.

And then, apparently, it was found that she had a liver ulcer.

So she wasn't well. Or at least had a history of not being well.

Floor said in an interview that the band had already contacted her and asked if she would be the singer for shows in November/December ... after the movie premier show. The whole hospital incident seems to have pushed that timeline up.

At least, so the speculation goes.

In all seriousness though, that is a shame. She was quite good and I quite liked both her and Tarja.

Still, Nightwish is talented enough that probably my favourite song I've ever heard came from them without any singers at all.

This makes me sad. Even though I much preferred Tarja (as a singer!), Annette grew on me.

I'm curious to see who will come next.

I like the direction Nightwish took when they got her. I just hope they continue to improve

Does that mean they'll get a good singer now?

Man, I don't think anyone will be able to step in to replace Tarja...

Yeah if I am correct it was the Denver concert the night before the final SLC one she couldn't perform. Instead she was hospitalized. So the band got Alissa White-Gluz and Elise Ryd from their opening band Kamelot to fill in. (Elise is really good) And that is what she was mad about.

Also yeah her quitting was ultimately inevitable. She wanted to spend time with her kids. I don't think the medical and performance issues are why she quit. I think there was just a communication breakdown between her and the band (they probably should have asked Anette if it was cool) acting as catalysts to speed up the process.

Your words sting my very heart Daystar....

I actually paused before starting this thread, simply because I was afraid it was going to breakdown into an Tarja Vs Anette smack down. Hopefully the Escapist is better than your average youtube comments section. XD

I'm not a big fan of hers.

I don't know if it was the new singer, the album, or a combination of both, but for me, Once was the last great Nightwish album.

She's a good singer, but I just think she's a terrible fit for Nightwish.

You know I have actually read stuff people have been saying hoping that they will bring Tarja back? That is some high hopes right there.

I don't know for me Tarja's Nightwish and Anette's nightwish are almost two separate bands. The style just changed so drastically in between the two. I happen to like both though.

Not going to happen. She's had a couple of interviews where that question has been asked, and the last time, the response was this: "I would consider returning if they had replaced all of the members and management since the last time I was there."

If that's not an emphatic "no," I don't know what is.

Aha...

I didn't know about After Forever or Floor so I can't judge or imagine how that will work out.
Never liked the new direction Nightwish took after Tarja left. I don't really know the new songs and Anette's voice just missed the ?grander? sound of previous works.

Since then I started to listen more and more to Evanecence and Within Temptation.

While I do believe Anette was a very good singer I still like Tarja better. Mainly because with her singing Nightwish sounded pretty unique. With Anette Nightwish sounded a bit more generic I guess. Anette is still a really good singer and I listen to Nightwish songs she sang in but I like Tarja better.

Was any reason given as to why Anette left?
