Look, I'm all for considering the torture and gross mistreatment of some animals a crime. However, this proposition is all kinds of stupid.

Regulate hunting out of existence? Look at areas in the united states where deer hunting is illegal-- the critters are so grossly overpopulated that they graze themselves to starvation. The last ten years have seen an explosion in feral pig populations; animals with no natural predators.

Perhaps we can get an aussie to comment on the god given and human rights of a cane toad?

I think people who can seriously say animals should have rights and be able to sue people need to be put in a mental institution.

Im going to eat some chicken to protest this stupid proposal.

Come join the orginization of S.A.N.E. Some animals need to be Eaten

I dont know if anyone has heard about this but basically this guy wants to give animals legal rights. So in effect they could take you to court.

I can only imagine if this actually went through and this guy ended up gaining power.
uh, someone needs to tell this guy that he can't use himself as a source in his articles.

What Cass Sunstein did was write an introduction to a book of essays on animal rights where he mentioned that some people believe that animals can be granted legal standing, allowing actual people to sue on their behalf.

Wikipedia and five minutes of research.

There's a tree somewhere with the words "Cass <3 Newkirk" etched into it.

And I fear this may only be the beginning.

I'd like to be sued by an animal:

Judge: So what charges are to be levied?

Animal: MOOOOOOOO!

Me: Case dismissed?

I win. HA!

I can only imagine how many long and protracted legal battles would ultimately fail because the claimant ended up in the slaughterhouse.

Interestingly, someone already tried this with dolphins: see Cetacean Community v Bush. It concluded that Cetaceans do not have statutory standing to sue.

Sounds like the sort of insanity preached by PETA. If animals gain rights what's to stop inanimate objects? How would you like to be sued by your chair for abuse if you ass gets too big?

Ok, I realize that is a slippery slope fallacy but rights for animals is completely insane if we were to treat animals exactly as humans how would predators live when every kill is a murder trial? That's not the only problem I foresee but it certainly is the most obviously impossible one.

This guy wants to regulate hunting out of existance? He must be stopped. I love hunting (BTW, I'm not one of those jerks who shoot something and leave it to rot. I eat what I shoot).
